CdF: Concarneau vs. Lyon REDUX

By: Inara | January 24th, 2009

Since I’ve already written a preview for this match that was supposed to have taken place two weeks ago, I’m going to skip regurgitating all that information and just direct you here.

January 24th, 2008 (postponed from January 3rd)
Stade du Roudourou, Guingamp
9 AM ET (15:00 CET, 14:00 GMT)

Not much has changed except the composition of the squad. Not only are John Mensah and Sidney Govou out, but Juninho, Ederson, and Kim Kallstrom will be joining Anthony Reveillere, Francois Clerc, and Mathieu Bodmer in the hospital ward.

Le groupe lyonnais: Lloris, Vercoutre – Grosso, Boumsong, Cris, Gassama, Faure – Toulalan, Makoun, Pied, Fabio Santos – Pjanic, Delgado, Keita, Mounier – Tafer, Piquionne, Benzema.

Sebastien Faure, Yannis Tafer, and Jeremy Pied will be joining Lamine Gassama on the senior team this weekend, though only Gassama looks likely to get playing time. The good news is that Fabio Santos is back on the squad – let’s hope he stays healthy from now on. I’ve never seen a guy so unlucky with accidental injuries.

Oh, and Fred has been left behind. Again. Ha, take that!

If Lyon beat Concarneau (they better), then they will go on to play Marseille in the round of 16 next Wednesday. As you can guess, Eric Gerets is already sharpening his knives. So let’s cross our fingers and hope Lyon continue to build on their performance against Grenoble last week. They’re still a long way from peak form (or even average form, if you ask me).

You can find match links here.

Ben Arfa’s talents will never be realized. To bad…

So Tafer hit the post twice in this game. The lad really has alot of talent, Puel should look to integrate him in much of the same manner as Benzema was with Le Guen in charge. I also believe that with the loss of Govou, the constant playing time for Delgado and Keita should see their form improve.

Also, Mounier scored twice, so I think that coupled with the loss of Govou will see him playing again, especially since Puel seems to have figured out Ederson is best played centrally, and Kallstrom can work a better game then Makoun can when alongside Juninho and Toulalan.

that ben arfa article was hilarious, but i didn’t understand the following line:

“In anger, the young French international got to his feet and is reported to have squared up to pocket-rocket Ziani, who did not back down from the challenge.”

searching “pocket rocket” on urbandictionary.com all i can find are references to small vibrators, and Montreal Canadiens legend Henri Richard. Can anybody help me with this? Or can I assume that Ben Arfa wanted to settle the argument in some bizarre hockey-sex romp?

@Will: I believe it’s about Ziani’s small size, and it says “sqares up to pocket-rocket Ziani” refering to Ziani and his small frame. Perhaps I’m wrong, but that’s how I understood the expression.

P.S. Why would we want a soon-to-be 35 year old Paunucci in our youth-oriented team? Have we changed our Arsenal model for a AC Milan one? If yes, we better get Jean-Pierre Papin, I read that he’s playing again!

Ziani’s an idiot. He’s still acting like a fool even after Gerets put him in his place (look it up). Panucci….GTFOH

    Haha, look at this:

    http://www.goal.com/en/news/763/real-zaragoza/2009/01/27/1080017/ricardo-oliveira-close-to-swapping-zaragoza-for-panathinaikos–a

So, we really could get this guy. It looks like we have two possible striker arrivals at the moment: Oliveira and Dos Santos. If we miss both of them in the end, I guess we could all just sit down and cry, because I doubt we could sign some better players. Now, who do you think would be better for Lyon? My vote goes to Dos Santos, as long as it isn’t a loan deal. Oliveira, too, would be a quality signing and would make as a lot stronger in the forward department.

Nikola: it seems to me that Oliveira’s agent has made Panathinaikos the front-runner, because the Fred for Dos Santos rumor has “real teeth.” And if that’s the case, Dos Santos will be our only striker signing, which will in essence, make Piquionne #2, since I’ve read that Dos Santos has had a nagging ankle injury all season; if that’s true.

No I guarentee we wont sign anybody, dos santos is a winger anyway not a striker so we would have Piquionne and Benzema and thats it,so Aulas should sell one of those two because of course having one decent striker in a team is Fantastic !?Im getting fed up of the lack of ambition that Lyon are showing its really disappointing, thay seem to be pleased to have a backline of Boumsomg,Kallstrom,Gassama which is Laughable, are squad has absolutely no depth other than midfield, and half of the first team are mediocre at best(Reveillere,Cris maybe,Boumsong,Govou, and anyone who plays on the left)
Lefuter-Im really disgusted with myself,My sole intentions on this blog were to make friends who I could go and have picknics in the sunshine with jam sandwiches and thortens cake, and share the rest of our lives together-NO !! Get a life and talk about OL I have my opinions and you have yours.-

We Live For Moments Like This – Lyon Boss Claude Puel
Olympique Lyonnais general manager Claude Puel is eager for this evening’s match against great rivals Olympique de Marseille to come as a pivotal few days in Lyon’s season begins…
»Comments Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom The next five days could prove crucial in Olympique Lyonnais’ success this season and could even prove to be a watershed in the still young reign of general manager Claude Puel. While it is accepted that Lyon are being caught by a hungry pack of chasing clubs, few would have expected the league to be so closely fought at this stage deep into the season.

With the outside possibility that Lyon could end the season with no silverware, progress in the Coupe de France is vital for Puel to maintain the support of the fans and of the board, particularly as les Gones face great rivals Olympique de Marseille at the Stade Gerland.

Then, on Sunday, the Gerland is again the stage as Lyon face bitter local rivals Saint-Étienne in what is always one of the most anticipated clashes on the Ligue 1 calendar.

“It is in the nature of sport that we have decisive moments such as this,” Claude Puel explained to Football365. “First there is the knock-out match against Marseille and then there is the derby, which will be important for our supporters but also for the club’s championship ambitions.”

Lyon and Marseille played out a dreary 0-0 draw in the same fixture prior to Christmas but Puel has said that such a match is unlikely this time around. “It will be different,” he asserted. “Both teams will be fresher… There will be less calculations as both teams must press.”

The former Lille boss rejected suggestions that the fixture might have some bearing on the destination of the league title, stating: “This is completely different. For whoever wins, it will have no meaning for the rest of the season. We will do everything to continue the adventure.”

Lyon have terrible record against Marseille in the Coupe de France, failing to record a single victory over the Provence side in the competition since 1973. “All series have to end,” Puel smiled dryly.

Whether this terrible run concludes this year will be decided this evening.

I have a feeling we won’t sing anyone; well, maybe Kim! That a##hole Fred didn’t show up in London on Mon to meet with Tottenham officials either, so I’m sure that possible trade for Gio will die out too.

To tell you the truth i dont give a damn if we sign Kim,at least its somebody coming in,even if its the worst transfer we could have hoped for,in a strange way I want Barcelona to destroy Lyon come March like 5-0 on aggregate,at least Aulas might then get into into his thick scull that we need to sign good players !And clearly he doesnt understand anything in life if he thinks our current squad can beat Barca or even sustain a title challenge. And who the Fuck ever said we were emulating Arsenal ????????????????? If you havent noticed Arsenal are on a downward spiral right now, kids dont win trophies. Abalance does like experience and youth such as Barca,Man U,Inter

@Nikola ah! it all becomes clear. i thought, in the structure of the sentence, that “pocket-rocket” was a verb. now i understand it was an adjective.

re Fred not showing up to meet Redknapp. i didn’t realize he was only 25. he acts as if he is a superstar nearing the end of his career, stropping around on the field, moaning off-pitch about this and that. i think they shouldn’t sell him (what’s 5M euros anyway) and just sit him on the bench for the rest of the season, and let him go wherever he wants in the summer. four months of inactivity will make him worthless to any serious club, and he’ll have to take a low salary to go anywhere decent. let him play 2nd-string for Wigan or something next year.

Ronan: There is actually a Panucci-Lyon rumor in L’Equipe’s transfer section.

Will: Good idea about letting Fred rot on the bench. I was hoping we could get another player for him, but if not, I’d rather he atrophy due to lack of playing time. It would be worth the 5mill that JMA is asking. Though JMA also said something like “He[Fred]knows what’s expected of him if he stays.” I really hope they aren’t planning to play him if he stays. This type of behavior is ridiculous and shouldn’t be rewared.
