Derby Time!!!

By: Inara | August 25th, 2007

Since I’ve started writing for this blog only last April, I’ve never had the privilege of covering a derby. I plan to go all out today, with lots of disparaging pictures and remarks about Lyon’s eternal rival, Saint-Etienne.

August 26, 2007
Stade de Gerland, Lyon
3:00 PM Eastern Time (21:00 in France)

The clubs have met 94 times, of which only 29 of those are Lyon victories (26 draws). However, the last time Saint-Etienne won was in 1994, on their own pitch. The last time Saint-Etienne won at the Gerland was in 1993. So it has now been 15 derbies in which Lyon have not lost.

Lyon and Saint-Etienne are bitter rivals, and it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that this is the biggest derby in France (more details on the rivalry at the bottom of the post).

Match details:

Saint-Etienne made some significant changes to their squads. They sold Julien Sable, Frederic Piquionne, and Zoumana Camara, but they brought in Blaise Matuidi, Cédric Varrault, and Stathis Tavlaridis.

Their midfield is weaker because of Sable’s departure, but their forward line is one of the best in France, featuring two of L1’s best attackers in Pascal Feindouno and Bafetimbi Gomis (one of my favorites).

However, Saint-Etienne’s most famous player is Jeremie Janot, one of L1’s best goalkeepers. He’s passionate about his team and has the best ‘keeper kits EVER. He’s also 100% anti-Lyonnais, especially since last spring, one of OLTV’s presenters said about Janot, “I like him…dead.”

Saint-Etienne are currently in 9th place (Lyon are 12th). So far, they had one win, two draws, and a defeat.

Lyon Info:

Lyon NEED A win. Two defeats can be brushed aside as being off-kilter from all the injuries, but three straight losses would be very worrying. I can’t remember when the last time that happened - definitely not in the last decade.

As it stands, Lyon’s start to the season is their worst in ten years. The club hasn’t done this poorly since 1997, back when OL were pushing for a UEFA Cup spot. To urge their players to be at their best for the derby, 500 Lyon fans showed up to practice today with flares and smoke devices as they waved around signs and handed out flyer’s.

I expect a victory because when Lyon are back into a corner they show their true colors. At least that’s how they used to be. I’ll consider it a success if Lyon can prevent conceding goals due to our makeshift defense (though Saint-Etienne has good strikers, so a clean sheet may not be possible), and hopefully Baros and Benzema will use this opportunity to shine. So let’s say…2-1.

I know some of us have been pretty negative around here lately, disappointed by the performances of the team and the lack of good transfer activity. But this is when Lyon need us to stand fully behind them and cheer them on. So let’s cross our fingers for them and hope they kick some green clad asses.

The supporters at training today.

Out injured at the moment are Cris, Gregory Coupet, Patrick Muller, Fred, and Hatem Ben Arfa. Cris and Coupet will be out for several months while Muller and Ben Arfa have resumed light training. Sidney Govou should be fit. Fred won’t be back until mid September at the earliest.

Le groupe lyonnais: Baros, Belhadj, Benzéma, Bodmer, Clerc, Fabio Santos, Govou, Grosso, Hartock, Juninho, Kallström, Keita, Paillot, Rémy, Réveillère, Squillaci, Toulalan et Vercoutre.

Neither of Lyon’s two newest players, Frederic Roux and Cleber Anderson are on the list. While Lyon could use their services of right now, Perrin isn’t convinced by the level of their level of fitness and would prefer not to rush things. Because of that, Lyon have few options.

Expected lineup:

Vercoutre
Reveillere - Squillaci - Bodmer - Grosso
Keita - Toulalan - Kallstrom - Belhadj
Baros - Benzema

or

Vercoutre
Reveillere - Squillaci - Bodmer - Grosso
Juninho - Toulalan - Kallstrom
Keita - Benzema/Baros - Belhadj

I don’t think Govou will start; he may come on as a second-half sub. Lyon have no depth at the moment, except at GK, RB and DM, unless Perrin gives Sandy Paillot some minutes. But that’s unlikely since this is a derby.

The game will be broadcast by Setanta. For those of you in NYC, Nevada Smiths will be showing it. And for those of you looking for a stream, I will be busy moving this weekend and may not be able to post. So check here for some links, or feel free to post if you know of any good streams.

Some background on the rivalry:

A powerful team historically, Saint-Etienne were giants in the seventies and are the current record holders for the most number of L1 titles, with a total of ten. But in the early eighties, they suffered a financial scandal and saw a decline in their club.

Since then, Saint-Etienne were relegated twice, the last in 2003 due to falsifying the passports of two of their players, which saw them lose several points.

Despite the drama, some of France’s best players have played for them, including Aime Jacquet, Jacques Santini, Laurent Blanc, and Michel Platini. In the current generation, both Gregory Coupet and Willy Sagnol came through their youth ranks.

Saint-Etienne is only forty miles (60 kilometers) away from Lyon, though to the annoyance of Les Verts, Saint-Etienne is often treated as a poorer suburb of Lyon. In fact, the historical identities that have blended into the footballing mentality of the region is that Lyon is the richer, bourgeoisie neighbor, while Saint-Etienne is more passionate and blue-collared.

Lyon’s fanbase, considered to be “cold,” is not as vibrant as Saint-Etienne’s, who have some of the best supporters in France (perhaps only behind Marseille and Lens). However, the derby is one of the rare occasions when Lyon fans shed their formality and really get behind their team.

The last time these two clubs met up, it was in March (right before the return leg of the CL knockout rounds). Gerard Houllier wanted to take his “B” team to Saint-Etienne but was forced to field his regulars because of the heightened nature of the derby. For many, this is one of the reasons Lyon performed so badly against Roma three days later. The game was also punctured by a brief moment of violence, when fans of the two teams began throwing flares at each other. The teargas from the police forced the players to leave the pitch for a good twenty minutes.

At the time, there was a lot of bitterness between the two clubs over the non-transfer of Frederic Piquionne. Lyon were in the midst of a striker crisis (and they still are, btw) and were relentless in their pursuit of Piquionne, who was one of the better strikers of L1. However, Saint-Etienne refused to sell him, which prompted Piquionne, who was in favor of the move, to say that he was being treated like a slave.

That did not go over well with Saint-Etienne’s management, and after relegating him to the reserves for a few weeks, they sent him on loan to Monaco instead. Typically, Saint-Etienne’s president, Bernard Caizzo, blamed Aulas for the drama, claiming that Lyon were trying to destabilize their rivals by messing with Piquionne’s loyalties.

(Caizzo conveniently forgot that Aulas sold him Lamine Diatta the season before without a transfer fee…supposedly out of goodwill but who knows).

Besides Diatta, not many transfers have occurred between the two clubs, though the most notable is probably Coupet’s, who left Saint-Etienne in 1996 after three years of being their starting goalkeeper. His gamble paid off though, as Lyon got better and better, and this in turn prompted the France NT to give him a chance.

While the bitterness of the old days is a memory for many current fans, it still lingers among some of the older generation, including Michel Platini and Raymond Domenech, who still bear no love for their rival clubs.*

*Platini blamed Aulas for the flare throwing incident last April while Domenech’s big mouth has pissed off Saint-Etienne supporters on more than on occasion.

You know two years ago Janot planned on wearing a MILAN aC jersey just after you guys defeat but didn’t do it because he felt for you guys. But that kit was done and he wore an away jersey instead.
This is a local derby kinda like Lille-Lens, Toulouse-Bordeaux, Nantes-Rennes or Metz-Nancy. I fdon’t think their fans would say this one is the most important. It isn’t the most watched but as a parisian, I feel the tension only when I turn on OLTV. Lyon will have to win but I’d like to see what gigliotti can do

Lens-Lille is the most important, IMO… Since it’s the only derby I consider “real”.

    Yea, I’m an elitist freak.

Derbies are supposed to be local.

The problem in France when it come to derbies is that footballing towns are so far away from each other, and no city has more than one team. Compare that to London, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan…even Glasgow!

France has a hard time establishing that kind of hatred. Our closest derbies are still between different cities several miles apart. Paris-OM, for example, has taken precedence over any their local derby while OL’s main rival is an hour away. As for OL-ASSE, I can’t believe Lille-Lens would have more of an audience even if it is a “real derby” because of the population factor and the number of fans.

I have seen several Lyon / St Etienne et Lens / Lille. I think they are both the most important in France. In the same way.
and I agree with you, Mounier is really much better than Remy.
I went two times to the training, this week, and believe me : Mounier is really really motivate. And has more talent than Remy, to me.
I’m waiting for this derby… with so much passion !
As we say in French, this match is “Quitte ou double”.
If we lose, we’ll really have bad moments. If we win, that can launch our season.

    Please, guys…
    Be warriors on the pitch.

It is kind of early, but given the state Lyon is in, I feel like it’s now or never no matter who they play. If Lyon couldn’t hack it against Lorient, they are just as likely to be slaughtered by Nancy, who are doing astonishingly well.

Yes, Nancy won 4-1 tonight ! I saw them play against Marseille, that’s incredibly amazing !
And Guy Roux just left Lens. He said on french TV canal + he cannot go on. He hasn’t “the grinta” yet… No punch enough. I’m so sad about it.
A lot of goal scored tonight… that’s great ! Hope that will be the case tomorrow!

I can’t believe Roux retired. Four straight losses isn’t a big deal when you consider that it took Marseille five games to get their first win. Maybe he is feeling his age. I wonder what he’ll do if Fernandez steps down from Auxerre?

And Nancy is tearing up the league. But you know, they did this last year too. I remember when they were in third place and were all the rage. But they just don’t have the manpower to sustain their campaign. They deserve a top half finish though.

Anyway, Jo, since you’ll be at the derby tomorrow, I’m counting on you for your observations. And cheer extra loud for me!

I followed this game on ESPN gamecast…from what I read Toulalan was man of the match?

    How were Keita and Govou?

Didn’t see the match only followed the live text and during the first half short spells of radio commentary - so not a very complete picture. It didn’t seem like either Keita or Govou had a great match.
However Juninho sounded to have had a good match which will do his sometimes shaky confidence good. Plus yes it seemed like Toulalan was man of the match. Overall however sounded like OL were definately dominant especially once they got into their stride.
Let’s hope this is the start of turning a corner and an end to the bad luck. Great match to make a come back with. I bet the ambiance at Gerland was fantastic tonight.

Keita was a little better but he’s still too personal. He’ll have too calm down.

Govou didn’t have a lot of offensive situation, and did the minimum on defense. Apparently he was still injuried.

Grosso did a great match for sure, offensively as usual BUT (good news) defensively too!

Toulalan was the man of the match even if he had replacement problems in first half(he want to do all the job so he’s sort of both everywhere and nowhere sometimes)

Juni begin to play better but he is still too slow. However, he made the decision and that’s what we want from him(and from Kallstrom who was sort of invisble this evening, except in the replacement)

Vercoutre did his job but he’s still very scary in the air.(look the 81th minute)

Benzema is for sure the attacker you need when you want to play in 4-3-3(like Drogba for Chelsea).

To conclude, I’d say that it’s better but we are still to slow, both in offense and in the replacement. It’s ok vs the crapy Verts but against United, Barca or… As Roma?

Right now its just good to begin playing better than other L1 teams. CL seems like a long way away (both time and standard wise).
    L’Equipe gave the following marks:
Vercoutre 6.5 (encouraging - though they mentioned the complete miss in the 81 minute)
    Clerc 5
    Squillaci 4.5
    Bodmer 5
    Grosso 5
    Juni 6
    Toulalan 7.5
    Kallstrom 4 (ouch)
    Keita 4
    Benzema 6
    Govou 4.5

Overall however the match itself only got 2 stars.
Jo how did you find the match?

I’m pretty ok with theses marks, except for Keita (I’d give a 3), Govou who ran a lot and destabilized the defense, so 5,5 seems good to me.

The match was very difficult for Lyonnais, but they didn’t give up, they were strong in the bad moments, and to me that’s very encouraging.
That was not the most beautiful match of OL, but the win is here. That will go better and better.
    I’m not worry.

I was at the derby yesterday.
I quite agree with Jo’s comments.
Most of the time, this match was boring, and even alarming, but OL won and that’s what we have to remember. We’re back in business!
Great performance from Toulalan, but that’s no surprise. This guy is really ESSENTIAL.
Benzema? 4 matches, 3 goals. Nothing to add.
Grosso played well too. He also offered us some “extra dribbling” which were quite impressive. This player is more than a defender. And I strongly believe that he can recover his world Cup level.
Then, Keita…humm…Will he ever understand that he’s not alone on the pitch. I hope so.
Govou did great efforts. But I fear this player will never get the recognition he deserves (Thanks l’Equipe!!)
To finish, I was really, really disappointed when I realized that Mounier was not in the group. Difficult to understand that. as it is diffcult to understand that Hartock is still there, and that Riou is not far far away from Lyon.

Don’t worry, he will have an opportunity to play soon… as so many players are getting injured. Anderson is out for 2weeks!!! Who will be the next?
Bonus question: will Anderson suffer from the “Torben Frank syndrome” (for those who do not remember, OL signed this Danish striker in 92, he immediatly got injured, and did not play any game until 95!!!)

We were alarmingly shaky in the first half, St-Etienne played very well and Feindouno and Gomis were a pain for defenders. The goal (thanks, Juni) relieved the players from the pressure they were under. After that, it was back to an encouraging performance and despite a nerve racking ending, St-Etienne didn’t have tons of opportunities. Grosso I thought was a great improvement form his past performances. Keita is not with it at the moment, but with more confidence, he could be very dangerous. And Benzema is just unbelievable…

I think it dawns on all of us that the start of this season is nothing like last year’s. Because of many factors, we have to rebuild from (almost) scratch and those difficult wins will hopefully bind the team together, but that’s the optimistic talking… Anyway, we won against les Verts and that makes my day.
