A Bedtime Story

By: Inara | June 3rd, 2007

nounoursI came across this old blog entry the other day, and though it’s from April, it’s still quite relevant. The author, Tuttofoot, wrote a humorous but accurate account of three small Lyonnais (fans) reassured by their teddy bear, Houllier.

I was going to translate it myself, but the google translation does a much better job than I do (my French is embarrassing). You can also find the original here.

Note: Nounours means teddy bear.

Good night small Lyoneses…

In Lyon, the sun lay down and small the supporters OL was on the point of sleeping. Pimpequenelle and Nicaulas did not manage however to find the sleep, too anxious with the idea of knowing of what the next season would be done. Suddenly, Nounours Houllier went down from its cloud to border small the Lyons supporters and to reassure them as for the recruitment of the summer. It entrusted a secrecy to them: full of European stars were going to join the rows of the OL…

Nounours Houllier sat down on the bed of Pimpequenelle and undertook a tale for small the gones. Attentive, Nicaulas and Pimpequenelle demandirent then in Nounours Houllier how the OL was going it to gain the League of the Champions the next season.

“Dis Nounours, how that one will make to gain C1 with our team of L1”, known as Pimpequenelle.

“Oh, oh, oh”, exclaimed Nounours. “Jean-Michel, the sandman, sold tons of sands and to gain full with sousous which will enable us to build a competitive team the next season”, rétorqua Nounours.

“But which will one take Nounours then? ”, Nicaulas, dubitative exclaimed.

“First of all, I announce to you that Luca Toni, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and David Trezeguet are our targets in attack, and that at least one of them will come with the OL the next season”, Nounours affirmed. “If Fred from goes away, one will have full with under buying the best attackers of the world, and why not Diego Milito or Arouna Koné”, added Nounours.

“But tell me Nounours, why they did not come this winter, when the OL was cold? ”, asked Nicaulas.

“It is simple, they did not know what they lost but now, they know that Lyon is a large club of Europe”, rétorqua Nounours. “And worse you know, Milan Baros and Fabio Santos, it is heavy my small Nicaulas” added Nounours.

“Me I find that they fear these amateurs, I would have liked Nicolas Anelka, Carlos Tevez or Didier Drogba like had said it the sandman! ”, Pimpequenelle acknowledged.

“Why do you tell that my darling? ”, Nounours questioned. “We are nevertheless sixfold champion of France!”

“One lost also the Cut of the Nounours League”, released Nicaulas, a bit sulky person. “Me I would have liked that one buys young people like Jesus Navas, it is too strong”, launched Nicaulas.

“Ah not my small! Navas is very bad, it plays FC Seville. Moreover, fortunately that one did not take Christian Poulsen, it is one of the worst mediums of ground of planet, worse than Alou Diarra”, affirmed Nounours.

“Me Poulsen I find it gifted”, known as Pimpequenelle. “But one had promised to us other large players like Joaquin, Simao and Mauro Camoranesi. Why they did not come Nounours? ”, Pimpequenelle questioned.

“Yes why? ”, Nicaulas added.

“Oh, oh, oh the children”, answered Nounours. “Heu… it is the hour to lie down the kids! Think of the recruits of the next year! Imagine on the left Sylvain Armand, Nadir Belhadj in the medium in the place of Malouda! Or Bakary Sagna in defense and Steve Savidan in attack! Don’t that make you dream? ”, asked Nounours.

“BOF”, answered Pimpequenelle. “It is a little like Glen Johnson, it is announced as a large blow to come but they do not come in fact. In more one is likely to lose our best players if Abidal, Malouda, Govou or Fred from go away, hein Nounours”, asked Nicaulas.

“Oh, oh, oh children”, rétorqua Nounours. “You are too anxious, it is necessary to sleep and make beautiful dreams! ”, it added. “Imagine that one gains the League of the Champions the next season, with one doubled of Marouane Chamakh finally! ”, it launched.

“But Chamakh it is Of Bordeaux, therefore it is null, hein Nounours”, questioned Nicaulas.

“Go, with the bed small young imps! ”, Nounours answered curtly and going up on its scale.

“Good Nounours night! ”, the children exclaimed.

Once gone up in its cloud, Nounours called to the sandman.

“Could not You have transfered me pauv’ naze”, says it to Jean-Michel.

“Listening Nounours, one will balance a sand handle to them in full face and they will dream so that they will not be able to never have, because we know both that the next season all will be finished, with the fall of the action out of purse and the bankruptcy of the club”, argued the sandman.

- “Have You Jem reason”, answered Nounours. “One finished the round of the district and one breaks. It is the last year that I do that I warn you”, conclua Nounours.

And thus all the Lyons supporters fell asleep deeply by dreaming of glory and stars that never they will not have. Because they are only dreams, isn’t this a sandman? Good night small Lyoneses…

Gones = kids, it is a term proper to Lyon (the old dialect of the area), that’s why the OL players are called “the gones”.
This article is really representative (with humor) of the opinions that you can find on a lot of french blogs. Lyon announce big players every years and nobody come finally. The arrival of Perrin and Keita are described as a lack of ambition and that OL wants solely to win the League 1…by weakening the others L1 team…
Oh yeah that is THE N°1 TOPIC for several months, and more than ever now: the L1 has a bad level because the OL is just trying to weakened the others teams of L1, then it is the fault of Aulas if the others french clubs are bad and have no results in the european competitions: and if you don’t think like this, it is because you are a narrow-minded OL fan.
So you even have articles explaining that OL should be forbidden to buy players in France!!!!! When Lyon bought Malouda, Aulas is weakening an another french club, but when OM bought Drogba, it is perfectly legitimate to defend themselves against the horrible lyonnese “ogre”.(You can add now OM fans explaining you that solely OM is able to attract big players so OM should be N°1).

I am sorry to write such a long comment, but I begin to be really pissed off, and even if you answer reasonably on open blogs, the answer is: “you are an OL fan then you can only be a “footix”, so sheat up, Lyon don’t have supporters”.

PS : I am looking for an article of Sports Illustrated about the european soccer (written after the 1st stage of CL)describing the hierarchy between countries, and the fact that OL is one of the 3 bourgeois (with Bayern and PSV). Thanks for your help !

That’s a great analysis of the story, and I agree, there is a feeling among fans that they’ve been let down by the management.

But I don’t think it’s anyone’s fault. At the end of the day, Lyon can’t be the sole representative of the French league. Lyon want to buy players, but even with competitive salaries, they don’t want to come.

Like any ambitious club, Lyon want to buy the best players. When they can’t buy them from abroad, of course they’ll use players closer to home. And it’s not just the club weakening the league – these players want to come to Lyon too. Toulalan, Squillaci, Keita, etc – they wanted to play for the champions. No one is forcing them.

It was only ten years ago when Marseille and PSG were buying OL players and weakening our team!

And here’s the article you’re looking for: Link

All I can say is “Pfff…”
I start to fed up with others team’s fan, which see in the Lyon’s growing up, something like Evil…
They better support their club, maybe they will win and so also buy “big players”…
I don’t care to have Kaka, ronaldinho or others in Stade de Gerland !
I just wanna see some players who want to win matchs adter matchs, and go on ! If there name aren’t “very know”, that’s not my problem ! Actually, that’s other team fan’s problem…

    Inara,thanks a lot!!!
This article is a perfect sum up of the European soccer situation, consequently it explains at 100% the strategies of OL and its limits…
I consider that, at the best, OL can become the French Bayern…and if we look at the Bayern mercato, they bought all their players from others German clubs except Luca Toni (ok an italian club, but not 1 of the Calcio Big 4 playing CL regularly…), but last year they had to sell their best player to Chelsea…
In France there are only 2 direct qualifying places, so we cannot have more than 2 big clubs (or maybe 3).
Have a nice week, and read this article!
