Inara,thanks a lot!!!
This article is a perfect sum up of the European soccer situation, consequently it explains at 100% the strategies of OL and its limits...
I consider that, at the best, OL can become the French Bayern...and if we look at the Bayern mercato, they bought all their players from others German clubs except Luca Toni (ok an italian club, but not 1 of the Calcio Big 4 playing CL regularly...), but last year they had to sell their best player to Chelsea...
In France there are only 2 direct qualifying places, so we cannot have more than 2 big clubs (or maybe 3).
Have a nice week, and read this article!

All I can say is "Pfff..."
I start to fed up with others team's fan, which see in the Lyon's growing up, something like Evil...
They better support their club, maybe they will win and so also buy "big players"...
I don't care to have Kaka, ronaldinho or others in Stade de Gerland !
I just wanna see some players who want to win matchs adter matchs, and go on ! If there name aren't "very know", that's not my problem ! Actually, that's other team fan's problem...

That's a great analysis of the story, and I agree, there is a feeling among fans that they've been let down by the management.

But I don't think it's anyone's fault. At the end of the day, Lyon can't be the sole representative of the French league. Lyon want to buy players, but even with competitive salaries, they don't want to come.

Like any ambitious club, Lyon want to buy the best players. When they can't buy them from abroad, of course they'll use players closer to home. And it's not just the club weakening the league - these players want to come to Lyon too. Toulalan, Squillaci, Keita, etc - they wanted to play for the champions. No one is forcing them.

It was only ten years ago when Marseille and PSG were buying OL players and weakening our team!

And here's the article you're looking for: <a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/gabriele_marcotti/12/07/champions.folo/" rel="nofollow">Link</a>

Gones = kids, it is a term proper to Lyon (the old dialect of the area), that's why the OL players are called "the gones".
This article is really representative (with humor) of the opinions that you can find on a lot of french blogs. Lyon announce big players every years and nobody come finally. The arrival of Perrin and Keita are described as a lack of ambition and that OL wants solely to win the League 1...by weakening the others L1 team...
Oh yeah that is THE N°1 TOPIC for several months, and more than ever now: the L1 has a bad level because the OL is just trying to weakened the others teams of L1, then it is the fault of Aulas if the others french clubs are bad and have no results in the european competitions: and if you don't think like this, it is because you are a narrow-minded OL fan.
So you even have articles explaining that OL should be forbidden to buy players in France!!!!! When Lyon bought Malouda, Aulas is weakening an another french club, but when OM bought Drogba, it is perfectly legitimate to defend themselves against the horrible lyonnese "ogre".(You can add now OM fans explaining you that solely OM is able to attract big players so OM should be N°1).

I am sorry to write such a long comment, but I begin to be really pissed off, and even if you answer reasonably on open blogs, the answer is: "you are an OL fan then you can only be a "footix", so sheat up, Lyon don't have supporters".

PS : I am looking for an article of Sports Illustrated about the european soccer (written after the 1st stage of CL)describing the hierarchy between countries, and the fact that OL is one of the 3 bourgeois (with Bayern and PSV). Thanks for your help !
