Euro 2008 and Lyon’s 2008/2009 Schedule
By: Inara | May 25th, 2008No word yet on Lyon’s pre-season schedule, but that’s to be expected because half our players will be involved in either Euro 2008 (looking at all the Lyon players spread throughout the Euro 2008 squads, one of them better return as a tournament winner) or FIFA World Cup qualifying. The players that will remain behind will be traveling to Dubai next week to help Al Shabab football club celebrate their 50th anniversary. On the surface, this trip seems random, but keep in mind that Dubai and Lyon have that city project going on, and OL are also involved.
I imagine the traditional trip to Tignes will occur at the beginning of July, and perhaps there will be some friendlies thrown in towards the end. I’ll be sure to post that information as soon as it’s released. Also, the date of the Trophée des Champions has not been released. The game will feature Lyon and Bordeaux.
In the list below, I’ve included not just the dates for the league matches, but also all the dates for the Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue, and Champions League. Naturally Lyon will win all those games and bring home that quadruple. Duh. Also included are the relevant international fixtures that take place before the 2008-2009 season officially starts. So there will be lots of footy to keep you guys occupied for the next 365 days.
See the full list after the jump.

So funny !
Lyon will have a tough time, being in final in every competition…

Lyon will have to keep their squad together and sign a couple of defensive reinforcements to go far in all the tournaments. I would prefer if Lyon not win the title but win the Champions League. It’s about time they focus more on UCL.

According to Aulas, 50 to 60 million euros will be spent on getting ready for the CL. Even if that includes the money for Ederson and Pjanic, that’s still 40m. As things stand, there will be no other offensive reinforcements (don’t forget we will get Baros back). Lyon can easily buy three or four quality players for that amount of money.
So that must mean: goalkeeper, another CB, and a LB. The team for next year:
GK: X, Vercoutre
RB: Clerc, Reveillere
CB: Cris, Squillaci, Boumsong, Paillot, X
LB: Grosso, X
DM: Toulalan, Fabio Santos
AM/CM: Bodmer, Juninho, Ederson, Pjanic, Kallstrom
RW: Keita, Remy, Govou
LW: Delgado, Ben Arfa
ST: Benzema, Baros, Fred“X” represents a position that will definitely be reinforced. The italicized names are the ones most likely to leave.
We’ll hopefully get Lloris for gk. If we lose Anderson, and since Muller will be released, Lyon will have to get a CB even if Paillot returns. We saw this year that four CBs isn’t enough sometimes. We’ll also get a LB, possibly two if Grosso leaves. If Reveillere leaves, we’ll also get a RB.
I am assuming Kallstrom will leave (but will not be replaced). One of Govou or Ben Arfa will probably leave. If both stay, then Lyon will either sell or loan Remy again. If either leaves, then Lyon will keep Remy. If both leave, Lyon might consider another attacker. If Lyon choose to sell Baros (who’s going to buy him), Lyon might consider another attacker (but doubtful). Fabio Santos will be coming back, so Lyon are looking to either sell or loan Cleber Anderson to Brazil in order to free up a non-EU spot. Crosas will probably not be kept.

Inara - Why didn’t you put the champions League finale in BOLD?
It is the most important date for us next year!

Quick correction — the France v Colombia game is on 6/3. Also, all three friendlies will be on Setanta. Woohoo!!

Paillot played fantastic when he went to Grenoble. Seeing as he obviously won’t see that much time, Aulas should loan him to Grenoble for the entire season next year to get some Ligue 1 experience so he will be ready full time in 09/10 with Cris on the back end of his career.

Kalltsrom will stay in Lyon, that’s he says, he is good player, faithful, we must keep that kind of player. Look how he fight for team. Against Le Mans, when we turnover 0-2 to 3-2, did you see how Kallstrom look happy and full of energy. We defenitly need him and must keep him. Govou says that he wanted to stay in Lyon forever end ever ( you Inara are write that words , and he will stay. I read in croatian magazine Football that Govou is lyon’s most faithful soldier. So if he wants leave, Aulas must fight for him to stay with as. Ben Arfa, ooo boy, I hp that that magic kid will stay. Aulas, you fool, fight for our kid, don’t sell him. For Baros, I’m not sure for his future in club. He was pretty good in Portsmouth, but in Lyon he sucks. He maybe score couple of goals, some important, like against Le Mans and Nancy, but in other, let’s say, 25 games in first half of season, he was zero on the field. Lyon maybe can give him a chance, but we must buy a quality striker tu fill in with Benz and Fred.

Haha, nice list.
How mad is it that we don’t use EITHER of our left wingers who both seem to have potential!Posted from

Guys your hope that Perrin will be kick out for Lyon, are go down, to minimum. Aulas says that Perrin have contract and he is in club. And Aulas praise Perrin for winning double.

I don’t want to be picky but I heard that the “Trophée des Champions” will take place anyway…except that the game will opposed the 1st of the League against the 2nd of the League…yeah we will start the new season by a “choc” OL vs Bordeaux…promising…
at the condition that this information is not bullshit…Posted from

Matt- I heard the same thing. They need to have a trophee des champions every year otherwise it makes no sense for history. Especially Lyon have now won 6 in a row… let’s keep the series going.
Also it makes a bit of money early in the season for channels.

If there is a Trophee des champions, all the better then. I had heard otherwise, but I’m glad to hear it’s still on. Almost every one of Lyon’s title wins have been preceded by this match. Though Bordeaux will probably be our toughest challenger yet!

Bad news on the transfer front: Mancini has been linked with Lyon again by the Italian media. Gross. I’d rather keep an unhappy Ben Arfa, thanks. Anyway, chances of this happening are rather slim. Lyon were interested last year, but this year, Mancini had less of an output than Keita. We really don’t need another diva at our club, and one that will be useless.
As for Ben Arfa, he’s apparently had it after the Coupe de France final and refuses to sign an extension, so Aulas will have to sell him. Villareal, Arsenal, Marseille, and Roma have concrete interest. Aulas will let Ben Arfa go to the club with the highest bid.
OM also want Kallstrom, but I don’t see this happening. Aulas might let one OL player join a rival, but two in one summer? Hell no.
Bayern are now interested in Coupet.
Lloris is all but confirmed as a signing.
Pjanic will sign as soon as last minute details are sorted out by Lyon and Metz.
Portsmouth have offered 9m for Govou. Atletico are also interested in him.
There is a crazy rumor on Hit&Sport that Squillaci won’t be at Lyon next year.
Olympiakos want Perrin.

Also, I will have a season review up, but I’m waiting for OL Feminines to play their French Cup final. If they win, both the men and women will have achieved doubles. That’s history!

Really sorta sad to see Ben Arfa leave now after watching a highlight reel of his. Such world class potential. Perrin perhaps should have managed his situation more delicately, this shouldn’t happen at what aspires to be a great club.

Govou will not go anywere. Why go to club(s) who are weaker than Lyon ( Protsmouth, Atl. Madrid , and of course, pay in Portsmouth is small, so Govou choice is obvious - Lyon and forever Lyon. Kallstrom said that he loves Lyon, so he wll stay with us. For Squillaci, I gone say : Stupid club who want buy him. We all know how Lyon
are short with good defenders, Squillaci is one of them. He maybe, sometimes, have problems, but who don’t have? Perrin, as I said before, will stay. Aulas was clear when he said that Perrin have a contract, and he will be in Lyon until that contract expired. Than they will decide would Perrin still be on bench or not. Ben Arfa gone also stay. Aulas will give to buyers high sky price, so they will give up on him. I hope so.Posted from

I jus read an article saying that Aulas was contacted by Olympiacos who would like to take Perrin as their head coach , next season!

Portsmouth has a pretty strong French contigent full of French players and players who have played in Ligue 1. I can see Govou going there without a doubt, especially if Kranjcar leaves. Utaka had a pretty good season and he and Govou are practically synonymous in terms of the way they play. Portsmouth may not be a big club, but they are on the right track and don’t forget the “allure of English football” that suddenly entices a player.
Squillaci is not going anywhere. Perrin to Olympiakos? Fine with me, hopefully this will keep Ben Arfa put. And Inara, I think you are being a little to hard on Mancini. Output? Mancini destroys Keita this year. 45 appearances, 13 goals compared to 41 appearances, 5 goals. I’d take Mancini anyday.

Girondins.com (Bordeaux official website) confirms Bordeaux will play the Trophée des Champions. No date announced yet.

Jao: True, this year Keita wasn’t that great, but it took him six months to settle. Now he’s playing a lot better. Mancini is a good player, but for me, Keita is better. Anyway, the worst part about Mancini is his attitude. He’s like Fred. And we don’t need two of them on the squad.
Set: Thanks for the confirmation. As soon as a date is announced, I’ll put it into the calendar.

Just reading those goal.com articles makes me laugh.
Robinho & Ramos & Diarra plus 50 million for Ronaldo. Are you serious? Here’s a good question, would we take that for Benzema? Great player Benzema, yes, but that’s alot of talent right there.

All I know is that if Lloris isn’t in a Lyon kit by the end of the week, I might die of a broken heart.
