Lyon Get Their Asses Whupped
By: Inara | October 5th, 2008These 3-0 losses are starting to turn into a yearly ritual. A humiliating one.
The game was so bad that Lyon’s official website posted a highlight video that was only three minutes long – usually they are around twenty minutes. Watching it, I realized why. Apart from Mickael Pagis’s three goals, not much else happened. Rennes dominated from start to finish, and even Jean-Michel Aulas conceded that Rennes deserved their victory 100% whereas Lyon were lucky to leave with the shirts on their backs. Puel on the other hand didn’t even want to talk about what went wrong.
Lyon had eleven men on the pitch, but they might as well have been ghosts because their physical presence in the game was barely noticeable. They didn’t win any tackles, couldn’t make any decent passes, had only two shots on goal, and only a few more shots in general. They did muster up 12 fouls though, and Anthony Reveillere can count himself extremely fortunate that he didn’t get a deserved red card for his foul on Jimmy Briand.
So what is the reason for this meltdown of epic proportions? I’m not panicking because this loss isn’t a sign of the team’s weakness or lack of quality. This is the first loss of the season, and it’s possible that it might be Lyon’s only league loss this year. But today does show signs of tiredness, malaise, and an overall sense of disorganization, which is ironic considering that Puel is the king of organizing.
First of all, Anthony Reveillere has played every single minute since August 17. For a fullback, that’s overkill, and it’s no wonder that he’s so exhausted. I wish Puel would allow Lamine Gassama to play. Surely that is less risky than playing Kim Kallstrom as LB.
And speaking of LB, problems continue. Kallstrom proved to be just as disastrous as John Mensah in that unfamiliar left back role. At this point I’d even take Thimothee Kolodzieczak. Even the usually reliable duo of Jeremy Toulalan and Jean II Makoun were uninspired and insipid at times.
Things are also a mess up front. The attacking four combination changes every game. Today it was Karim Benzema paired up top with Frederic Piquionne, and they were supported by Anthony Mounier and Kader Keita. Normally those four would bode GOALS! GOALS! GOALS!, but today all they managed to muster amongst themselves was a single paltry shot on goal.
Typically, the anti-Puel threads have already started popping up in various OL forums, but I think this game was more of a freak event than anything truly worrisome. At most, this game just highlighted problems that we already know Lyon have – their issues at LB and RB, the constantly changing attack lineup, as well as the continuing lack of cohesiveness from Cris and Mathieu Bodmer. These are problems that can only be fixed with time, and that’s something that’s not in our hands.
Though I will be SO GLAD when Fabio Grosso returns to fitness.

Yeah I don’t know what Lyon were thinking when they ended the summer mercato knowing they only had one LB (and one RB that can sometimes play LB). That made no sense to me because, as circumstances have proved, injuries to players can happen simultaneously.
It’s weird because OL are normally a lot more careful than their recruitment. I understand that they don’t want to have too many players, but that hasn’t stopped them from overcrowding the midfield and the wings. So it seems strange that the only place they’d be stingy is in defense, where Lyon already suffered there last year.

I don’t want to seem like I’m adding to the Puel bashing, he’s a great coach and I’m sure he’ll have the team turned-around next week. But this side back recruitment failure was his screw-up: His new recruitment powers. I can’t imagine JMA not filling that gap, especially after he purchased so many midfeilders and wingers, some of them being overkill.

Hahaha. That’s bad when Johnny starts ranting in Italian that he wants the dreadful Fabio Grosso back. I saw highlights of this game and it must be said that former Lensois Olivier Thomert who is now the Rennes captain looks ready for a call up to the national team. I also look for him to be gone to the EPL over the winter. Just another pathetic screw up by our peripatetic wizard of a president. Allez Lens!

Didn’t see the game but not shocked, it looked like it was coming. We look weak and messy in defense.
On another note did you see the Fifa 09 matchup with Lyon v Schalke on the website?? Its brilliant! Benzema is hillarious!

That was pretty funny – and sad at the same time. Even in FIFA, Lyon concede three goals.
For those of you who want to watch the vid, go here: http://www.fifa09.ea.com/fr/experience/ and click on Lyon vs. Schalke, then click on Lyon when asked.

I did see that Ush, it was really impressive. My goal for Tuesday night is to finally download the demo on XBOX live so I can get my hands on the gameplay before I buy it. Because every year i shell out $50 only to complain for a year about how unrealistic the game engine is.
As for the match, I think that the lack of flexibility in Puel’s player selection is showing. His insistence on not playing our youthful fullbacks is also very disconcerning. He needs to pull his head out of his ass and remember that a 26 year old attacking midfielder and a 17 year old left back are probably on the same skill level at the left back position, so why not try the left back there and give hime some experience. If Kolo was to play even 5 games this year he would be so far in head of his peers in terms of development. Likewise Gassama, who I think is ready for Ligue 1.
Also, when we have three fit center backs, why is Bodmer still played in central defense? It is not his best position, he has not instinctual movements like a Cris or Mensah there, I say play Mensah at center back next game and lets see if the Rock was worth the money or not. If Puel insist on playing Bodmer, put him next to Le Toule or Makoun. A double pivot is not going to win you games in the already defensive Ligue 1. Recreating Essien and Diarra will never work because they had Juninho centrally to dish the balls out, and Essien was a much better player going forward the Makoun is. Makoun is Diarra, not Essien. Play Bodmer or Kallstrom along side Toulalan or Makoun for a proper 4-4-2, otherwise use Ederson/Pjanic in conjunction with those 4 and use Mounier and Govou/Keita like the was set up to play!

Corey: Good strategy. But I’m sure Mensah won’t play, because Puel promised Bodmer at the beginning of the season he would be assured a starting place, albiet at CB since the midfeild is stacked. And that in the spirit of “team,” he should convert to center back, becuase that’s where he’s needed most. And maybe, that that conversion was Bodmer’s best shot at making the NT, because of his size, lack of playing time in the midfield at Lyon, and competion in the overcrowded NT midfield. I’m sure Puel sold it well. I’m convinced Boumsong will want to leave in the winter, and Mensah at the end of this year. Hopefully JMA can recover what he paid for him.

That was not defeat. That was humilitaion of Lyon. We were kind of joke for avarege Rennes. Keita – waste of time. He was injured, that’ for sure, but he must prove that he is for first 11, but yesterday he faild. Pjanic was better choice. Ederson – he was on bench ??????!!!!! How that kind of player can be on bench???!!! He is that type of player who can turn the game by self. But, again, he was on bench!!! Kallstrom on left????!!!! Come on Claude! We all see that Kim can’t play on left ( in defence ). Best example was game against Fiorentina. Two goals came from his side. So better solution was Mensah than Kallstrom. Benzema – Piquionne – is clear that that pair can’t play together. Fred looking better when he plays with Benz, but why Puel can play Fred ( who try to better ), when he can play Piquionne, who ( even he scores against Fiorentina ) looks very bad on field.
Line up :
Lloris
Reveillere Cris Mensah Grosso
Toulalan Makoun
Govou Juninho Ederson
BenzemaThrow out Mensah form this first 11, and you will get a team who beat St.Etienne. Now we must win against Lille at home and against Auxerre and Socxaux, both away ( including games against Steaua ).

John: I agree that Puel has sold Bodmer on the CB spot, but I disagree that it gives him a better shot at the NT for two reasons. One is that he is not that good a central defender, which I think we all can agree on, and two is that last year when he was playing in midfield (and scored two against Bordeuax at Gerland) he got his first cap, and if he continued playing in midfield he, like Gourcuff, would be the two guys to partner Le Toule in the midfield and add not only solid effort on defense but something going forward like Pat Viera use to do.

Corey: I meant that before the season started, Puel had sold him on the NT thing, not that I actually believe that he would make it as a CB. But if his concentration and clearences got ALOT better, he may have a shot, due to his size and since most of the really good CBs are still too young. With Gallas waning,Mexes possibly traumatized from his first match, and the youth of Sakho, Bellaid, Kaboul and company, I think the CB positions are up in the air. And we can only speculate as to what type of player he’d be if he’d been playing in the midfield all this time. I just think that with Ray Ray’s obsession with defensive mids, and the surfiet of attacking mids: Ben Arfa, Ribery, Nasri, Gourcuff, Govou, Malouda, etc, it would be very difficult for him to break in to the NT. But I agree, I would like him alongside Toulalan instead of Viera, to get foward. I don’t like the two DM thing with L. Diarra and Toulalan.

SG: Go easy on Keita. It was his first game back. He shouldn’t have been starting; should’ve played 20mns at the most. And it doesn’t matter who was on that pitch last night: Bernard Lacombe in his prime, Maradona, Pele…that was a collective failure.

You have wright John. But I mean that some of the players don’t have team spirit. They just want score winning goal, become famous and go from Lyon to some of big clubs in Europe. And that is not good for the team.

SG: Are you saying Benzema is not good for the team?

SG: I pray to God Keita uses Lyon as a stepping-stone to another club. Hopefully, JMA can recover his astronomical transfer fee. He cost 2mill more than Chelsea payed for Malouda. We could have bought two or three solid players for his price.

This talk of Bodmer at CB is making me sick. How could this be anything but temporary? You are telling me that Puel thinks it’s a good idea to convert him permanently to CB when he is one of the most talented mids in France? If that’s true then OL is doomed because their manager is an idiot. I can’t believe that he would start Bodmer at CB if Grosso was healthy and he was able to move Mensah back to his natural position.

Oh and the rumor Bodmer in the French NT at CB = a very bad joke. Lets not forget that Squillacci and Escude are still very serviceable at that position if Domenech decides he doesn’t like Mexes/Abidal.

Inara: So sorry about Lyon! Maybe I should start following the team. I’m usually pretty good luck when I become a fan, even if I don’t know what’s going on! On a completely different note, I’ve got someone over at my place today who’s running for prez. You’ve always been a champion of the “underdog.” You should Check. This. Out.

Benj: I’d agree about Bodmer, it does seem slightly strange how Puel is keeping him there, especially when Boumsong is on the bench. I hope when Grosso returns to full fitness we see Mensah at CB rather than Bodmer. We’d be losing the services of an extremely talented CM if this continues.

Sam and Benj: I suggest that both of you make Santa a list of who you want to stay and who you want to see go in the winter and next summer. The reason Bodmer’s in defense is because it’s simply impossible to accomodate all these midfielders and wingers unless their is an injury crisis. And Lyon isn’t Real or Man U: players aren’t going to be happy about being on the bench. And as Inara pointed out, the rotation at the attacking positions is killing any chance of the attacking players becoming cohesive. So unless Toulalan leaves, Juninho retires or a couple of the other lesser players take off, expect to see Bodmer back there for a while. And that thing about him making the NT was based more on Raymond’s penchant for Lyon players. But he obvioulsy doesn’t have the skill at the moment to get the call up in defense.

I seriously think lyon should persue Mexes,he has a release clause in his contract at approximately 15 million euros, well worth it when you consider a strong backline of clerc-cris-mexes-grosso,a champions league winning one, then a quality striker, and possibly winger and the champs league is ours

I think we need a LB, not one more CB.
And we need to STOP these injury jinx in our backline, each year.
That’s the point.Posted from

Now Boumsong gets called to the NT, as Gallas’s spot might be in jeopardy…
He may become a player who gets more playing time in the NT than in his own club…Posted from
