Lyon vs. Nancy

By: Inara | August 29th, 2009

I didn’t have the energy to do an actual preview for this game, so I figured I should at least put up a game day thread.

August 29, 2009
Stade de Gerland, Lyon
3 PM ET (21:00 CET)

Nothing to report except that Nancy have bigger injury concerns than we do. They’ll be missing Michael Chretien, Abdeslam Ouaddou, Chris Malonga, Floyd Ayite, and Cheick Diabate. There is also the small fact that Nancy haven’t won at the Gerland in almost 20 years.

Lyon have some players missing as well, but unlike Nancy, they have more than enough depth to cover those absences. Jean-Alain Boumsong, Ederson, Sidney Govou, and Cleber Anderson will be watching from the stands tonight. Also, Yannis Tafer has been inexplicably left behind in favor of Ishak Belfodil.

Le groupe lyonnais: <em>Lloris, Vercoutre – Cris, Bodmer, Réveillère, Cissokho, Clerc – Toulalan, Källström, Gonalons, Makoun, Pjanic, Delgado – Mounier, Belfodil, Bastos, Gomis, Lisandro

The lineup has already been posted on OL’s website. As you can see, it is an exact replica of the team that welcomed Anderlecht nearly two weeks ago.

Lloris
Réveillère – Cris – Bodmer – Cissokho
Pjanic – Toulalan – Kallstrom
Bastos – Gomis – Lisandro

I’d think that Puel would want to rest some of these players, but I guess he’s thinking ahead to the fact that Lyon have a long international break ahead of them, and most will get the rest they need then.

You can find some streams here or here. Remember to share if you find any working links!

  • I wouldnt mind signing alex or metzelder

There is no need to discuss about Trezeguet anymore,he is 90% not going to wear a OL kit.And for Licha,he is a great player and IMO he made a huge step in his career when he signed for OL.Lets be honest there arent many "much bigger clubs then Lyon" where he could be the main star of the team like in Lyon and the french league is 5 times better then the portugeasue one and Lyon is a much bigger club then Porto. He made a good choice!
Ronan,I fully agree for the CBs,all the players you mentioned would help us alot but there is a small chance that we will buy one until the next summer :(

  • Flash

Ronan: There arent many bigger clubs than Lyon

  • Sam

ha, there's no pleasing you Ronan... You'd always say Lyon needed to aim for the highest with their transfer buys, and now with Lisandro you say he deserved a move to a bigger club?

  • Ronan

Trezeguet is useless for me obviously in his prime he was extremely good but his prime was 5 years ago.

  • Ronan

the ibra deal was so stupid on Barcas behalf,I know or I think I know Eto o was a bit of a nuisance to them in terms of disrupting but Eto o is way better than Ibra,Ibra has all the attributes to be the best but he is aarogant(too aaragant)he isnt consistant and hasnt done it on the big stage where as eto o suited barca perfect, hed let Messi,Xavi and Iniesta do the fancy stuff while he would just net the finish-Ibra is different. Lisandro is very good-if truth be told he deserved a move to a bigger club than lyon from porto. The CB situation is horrible we just have the worst CBs ever, the thing is there are loads of CBs who we could potentially sign-Servet,Pedro Geromel,Rolando,Tamas,Rami,Papa Gueye,Hilton really the list is hundreds.

  • Aleksander

Lol no, i actually like Ibra, but i think in his two first matches, he's been terrible except for his goal. Lost alot of balls etc. When he gets used to the team, and the playing style, and the team gets used to him, then of course he will become a star. But he has big shooes to fill...

  • Notice Aleksanders flag and Ibra's National team and its rivals. Do I see a bias? :)

  • mrCham

That's an odd statement Aleksander. The guy scored on the season debut. As soon as he feels comfortable and feels he can enjoy playing he will be the best player Barca had since, well, ever!

  • Aleksander

I believe Ibra will be a flop in Barca until he figures out that he doesn't need to do all by himself. Also he will have to learn himself some 1 touch passing

  • Matt

There's a poll on Fifa.com "Which of these five transfers will turn out to be the best? - Adebayor/Diego/Ibrahimovic/Lopez/Robben. Nice to see him in the company of those other names :)

  • John

We don't need a striker that will demand to start. It's already crowded enough right now, trying to accomodate Gomis and LiLo in the 4-3-3. If we get someone like Gignac, we have no choice but to play a 4-4-2, bec neither of those strikers- except Gomis for the moment- will except playing from the bench, nor should they. And then there's the fact that the 4-4-2 formation seems to be a curse for us. I think we should get Remy, play him and Bastos interchangeably on the sides and Loic is a versatile player who can step-in at striker if needed.

  • I understood that it was humor and my responses were intended to be similar. However, the three signings of highly experienced players will help the young players in the long run. I don't think it's really an arguable point that the influence of Claube Makelele, Ludovic Giuly, and Gregory Coupet wont really help young players development. As for Trezeguet, I thought you wanted another striker in the mix. What about injuries, etc.? Do you really want Belfodil starting some champions league game?

  • Smile

Trez has 4.2m per year at Juventus, that's probably more than Gomis and Licha combined.

Even with his salary reduced I don't think he'd agree to play for Lyon for a peanut, so don't worry , he won't come.

  • Theo Walcott 14

The point is that in the moment we dont need Trezeguet.Licha is probably the best striker in the L1 and Bafe is also playing a great season and scored a number of goals and both are better then Trezegol so he would be just the 3rd striker and that wouldnt be a big improvment from the Juve situation. Why should we pay huge salaries to players who will just sit on the bench. We have a great team and I am wondering do we really need a ST?!Why dont give Tafer or Belfodil the chance to improve and became the new stars of OL in a few years?

We really have a great team but we are starting to be like Chelsea or Bayern.I hate it to see one of in the moment greatest football talents,Grenier, who is not even getting playing time at least in the Cup or in the last 10-15min in league matches.I am sure that if he gets some playing time he could became the new Nasri,Gourcuff or even Zidane.Maybe this is beacuse I am an Arsenal fan and I really like Wengers policy to give some playing time to young and perspective players or maybe beacuse I hate clubs who just buy players and cant produce new stars but I think that Grenier and Tafer and Seguin really deserved to get some playing time this season.

Sorry for my long comment but this is in my opinion a big problem!!!

  • Sam

embarrassingly enough having just looked at his record - Trez scored 20 goals in 07/08 which suggests he really isn't as past it as I suggested. He could probably do a job for a team over here - but I hope it wouldn't get in the way of recruiting Gignac

  • Sam

Bit of a sense of humour failure Thomas? It is the recruitment of players in the swansong of their career that's given PSG their reputation - it's just a bit of light hearted fun.

Trezeguet's star has massively faded over the past 3 years - and there's been little to suggest that his decline won't continue. There seems to be a few possible problems with Trezeguet - that he would likely command high wages and demand to start. I could see him having potential ego problems if he came back to France

  • Flash

Thomas, why do you think Trezegol would be an improvment to our team. I wouldnt say that he is better than Lisandro or Gomis and next year its likely that Gignac will be in an OL kit. I cant remember a good game from him in the last 2-3 years.
When Juninho and Cris came to lyon they were not oldies.
PSG is bringing players like Makelele,Giuly,Coupet and paying huge salaries instead of giving their young players more playing time. Maybe that helps the team now but what will happen in the next years when they are gone

  • And of course last season Lyon were "oldies" because of Cris and Juninho. Makelele and Giuly is all. The rest of our players are on the young end.

Also, Trezegol would be an improvement to any team, let alone Lyon.

  • Shadow

he called your team old....because of makelele and guily and whoever ( im not too familiar with your roster these days )

    *giggle*

  • Flash: Excuse me?

  • Theo Walcott 14

Flash is right. Why should we sign Trezeguet?!He is one of the greatest forwards in the last decade but if we think like this then we sohuld sign also Van Nistelrooy.I understand that you like him mrCham but there are much better options aveilable.
    Few available ST options:
Chamakh(If the England transfer collapse in January)
    Remy :D
    Gignac :D
Jovetic(very unlikely but still I would really like to see him in a OL kit)
Zárate(the same thig like with Jovetic)
but I am not sure if we will even buy a world class player beacause we just need a back up with Licha and Gomis we already have two first XI strikers.

  • Flash

Sure he was a good player 5 years ago, but next year he will be 32 and far behind his prime. He wouldnt be a real improvment to our team, maybe PSG could bring him to play with their oldies

  • mrCham

Hey .. HEY!! Everyone needs Trezeguet!! I'm just sayin this because he's been a personal favorite since 1998. And I always buy him in Football Manager when I'm Lyon.

  • Ian

    gignac would be preferred..or remy

  • Flash

    We dont need him.....

  • mrCham

Trezeguet's gonna leave Juventus after this season. He wants to return to France.... Please, everyone, start praying.

  • John

Ronan is back! The perfect man to talk CB possibilities with! Ronan, please tell me you've seen Gueye play for the Senegal NT, and haven't been following him in the Ukranian league. That's being too dedicated a football fan, lol.

  • John

Flash: I was wondering if anyone had seen anything in any other sources, besides goal.com.

  • Ronan

papa gueye for cb ? but nkoulou is much better than nothing regardless

  • Flash

Too bad, one of my favourite players :(

  • Dror

Gourcuff already gained world wide reputation and unlike other L1 stars he doesn't "need" Lyon in order to jump to Spain/England, i assume that when he does move it'll be to one of the giants. also, we have his position covered :P

  • Flash

Is it possible to get Gourcuff next year, what do you guys think?

  • Flash

    John:
Meanwhile, there is also talk of Nicolas Nkoulou, Monaco’s burgeoning young centre-back joining OL. Although prone to the occasional error, the 19-year-old has proven to be a very capable Ligue 1 starter, but he has already questioned his place with les Monegasques after falling out of the starting XI after a 4-0 loss away to Nancy(GOAL.com)

  • John

Has anyone heard anything about OL wanting to sign Monaco's Nicolas Nkoulou? I think we need a somewhat older, more experienced CB. And if OL are thinking about wasting their Joker signing on Soumah, they should reconsider and take a look at the CB position. We are one injury away from seeing one of the CFAs starting.

  • John

Nikola: Yep, I have to eat my words. Thank God I was so wrong!

  • I was looking at some posts from last November, at look what I've found:

John: "Benz is irreplaceable. You are right: no striker worth anything will come to L1. The best we can do is buy young talent from withing L1 or other smaller leagues."

I guess we all thought the same, but just look at what monster we've signed this summer in the form of Lisandro Lopez! It seems that Aulas is actually very capable of surprising us in a good way, who would've thought we could actually bring such a striker to Ligue 1? Amazing.

  • kubi

looks like we re finally linked with a cb.. Nicolas Nkoulou.

  • kubi
  • John

    The curse/blessing of the 4-3-3:

    http://www.ligue1.com/ligue1/l...

  • John

Exactly. I see him more as a supporting/second striker. I think we are set at striker and just need a deascent #3. Gomis will be a monster this year and no need to mention the other guy.

  • Aleksander

I wouldn't consider Lisandro a winger, he plays more of a Supporting striker on the left, and i think it is easier for him to create danger there than to play in the centre, where he may get outmuscled if he has his back turned to the goal

  • John

I'm trying to see how Gignac would fit-in to our squad. He's used to- and indeed thrives on- being the loan striker. I don't know how he would fit-in to our 4-3-3, bec it seems Puel is going to stick with that. I thought Gomis was going to continue last year's form and not warrant starting but he's proved me wrong and deserves to start. We just don't have room for another top-notched striker and I don't know how long Lisandro will accept playing on the wings.

  • Flash

It would be superb to get Gignac and even better Remy. Remy has more superstar talent than Gignac IMO.
Cris is playing really bad at the moment.
A Boumsong-Bodmer CB pairing should be our first choice.

  • John

Matt: I'm hoping- or I will really be upset- that JMA let Mounier go to Nice as part of a verbal agreement that Cohen sell Remy back to Lyon, and at a slight discount.

You are right about Cris. That's what I called for at the beginning when everyone started demanding his head. I thought he'd get through it, but he doesn't look like he will. Puel can't push him aside, but his play is hurting the team, it will probably cost us big in the future, either in the CL, the league or point differential at the end of the season(it's actually hurting us now).

  • Matt

I don't know about getting Remy but Aulas really, really wants Gignac still. We'd have 1 of the best attacks in Europe with Lisandro, Gignac and Bastos playing off Gomis as the Target man. Fingers crossed we can sign him next year and keep the rest of our key players.

When I look at this mercato i'm actually happy overall. Sure, our CB's are weaker compared to the rest, but Puel can't just force Cris out. He's been a great servant to the club and this should be his last season in France with him turning 33. As for Bodmer there's no doubt he's a talented and versatile player, give him time and he'll become someone we can trust. Regardless of how far we get in the CL I know the team's going to play beautiful football and that excites me as a fan.

  • John

I hope they move Govou over to the left when he comes back. Bastos has found his place on the right. Well, Sid may not even start if Puel keeps playing this 4-3-3 with LiLo on the left, and Gomis in the center. That's a devastating front line and a thing of beauty the more I look at it: Lilo-Gomis-Bastos. And I can't wait to see how Remy fits-in there next season.

Who was it that told me Lisandro couldn't play on the wings? He's a million times better that striker- what's his name?- that we had last year.

  • John

Transfers? Aulas was even talking about getting Soumah as a Joker now that the window is about to close.
I can't understand it: one solid CB,a third striker, and maybe a back-up DM and we are done with recruiting for the year. Those are the things we need to make us the complete team.

  • Shadow

doubt we are getting a CB as well. There have been no reports thats i can find that links us with a defender.

  • Michael

I am sure we wont buy CB !

  • Smile

I see, well I've watched him in several games, he seemed pretty solid to me.

Well then, we still need CB!

  • Shadow

dont sigh Smile, be happy, he is the Abiol of Holland, in that he makes mistakes ( like giving up penalties easly and own goal possibilties ) that can hurt the team. Everton are in for a rude awakening. His best position is RB...not CB.

  • Smile

    Heitinga to Everton for 7m!

    *sigh*

  • Dror

Bastos at LB would be an absolute waste considering we have a few alternatives at LB but no one nearly as good to fill the RW/LW one

  • John

    Don't forget Bastos at LB.

  • Flash

    I think not Michael.
We dont need a LB.Kim and Rev can play that position when Cissokho is not there and we also have Kolo..
What we need is a CB!!!

  • mrCham

Marek Cech, Christian Pander, Fernando Vega, Aleksandar Kolarov. 4 LB that would fit Lyon like a glove!

  • Ronan

yer anderson is crap, when he played he played with Squillaci who made him look better than he was.The CB situation is rubbish,I dont care that Grosso is leaving, but it is a shame if mounier is.Our CBs just dont compare to other clubs in the CL.

  • Shadow

we didnt bury cleber quickly enough, i remember what i saw of him, shaky most of the time.....if he was playing, i can guaran-damn-tee that we would conceded a goal every game, maybe two average.

  • Michael

Pride of Lyon,Jao> watch this watch?v=K-Kdn1W6OPc on youtube

  • Jao

You're not the only one POL. I still believe in him and I also think Bodmer will be, if not already, a damn good defender, despite all the "but he's a midfielder" comments even though Bodmer's made it clear he's accepted moving into the defender role.

Anyway, Kallstrom will probably see some time at LB in the league with Kolo probably seeing some time in the cups. And since Clerc isn't leaving, Revs will probably play there in CL. Now this is only feasible if Cissokho gets injured or needs major rest.

  • Pride of Lyon

Also don't forget Cleber Anderson, that we buried a bit too quickly. He may become a very valuable member of our squad, and he can play on the left as well, can't he?

  • Pride of Lyon

Definitely, the "how much" doesn't matter. Only the "how good" is inportnat. But still, it is a sign that the club took the transfer window very seriously, although I know most of you think we don't have enough back ups.

I would have kept Grosso, but apart from that, I am happy with what we have. I must be one of the only one to still believe in Cris. As for Bodmer, he could become a Laurent Blanc type of defender with a bit more experience.
I think Puel considers Kallstrom as a valid option at LB. Maybe for L1, but definitely not for CL.

  • Michael

Is Lyon interested in him ?

  • Flash

Hadnt knew that. Maybe Moussa Sissoko would be an option

  • Dror

the transfer window is not fully closed for L1 teams (or all french teams?) and they get to make another "joker" transfer before the winter transfer window.

  • Flash

we’re able to get 1 player after the transfer market ends
what do you mean with that?

  • Aleksander

thats great, we're able to get 1 player after the transfer market ends.

  • Michael
  • Michael

Grosso just sign for Juve and Mounier sign for Nice
It's not important how much money we spent,it's only important how good players we bought are :D

  • Aleksander

Kinda funny City r the only english club among the big spenders this year?

  • Aleksander

well, woth grosso gone, i guess we are back to having only one left back?....

  • Michael

Theo Walcott 14> I forgot Keirrison cuz he is on loan :D

  • Goal.com has in their transfer ticker thing that Mounier has left for Nice.

  • kubi
  • Oh, ok maybe I'm wrong. I thought I read that he was free though.

  • Theo Walcott 14

    Michael;You forgot Keirrison(14.000.000 €).That makes it 89.5 mil.

  • Michael

    Barcelona:
    Ibrahimovic 46 mil
    Maxwell 4.5mil
    Chygrynskiy 25 mil
    = 75.5 mil

  • Michael

Inter didn't buy Eto'o,it is part of exchange for Ibra

  • Theo Walcott 14

Thomas,I dont think that Lucio was free.

  • Um Lucio was free for inter so i think those aren't very accurate.

  • Theo Walcott 14
  • Theo Walcott 14

    Flash;
    Bayern:
    Danijel Pranjic 7.700.000 €
    Mario Gomez 30.000.000 €
    Arjen Robben 24.000.000 €
    Edson Braafheid 2.000.000 €
    Anatoliy Tymoshchuk 11.000.000 €
    =74.700.000 €

  • Theo Walcott 14

I got the stats from a website and heres what they wrote:
    Inter Milan:
    Marko Arnautovic 9.000.000 €
    Lúcio 7.000.000 €
    Emiliano Viviano 7.000.000 €
    Diego Milito 25.000.000 €
    Riccardo Meggiorini 2.500.000 €
    Samuel Eto'o 20.000.000 €
    Wesley Sneijder 15.000.000 €
    Thiago Motta 14.000.000 €
    Kerlon ?
    =99.500.000 €
I know that the Etoo fee is probably false andwithout it there are still 79.500.000 €
Sam;the players are:Crespo, Meggiorini, Bonucci, Bolzoni, Acquafresca and Fatic.Thats 28mil and Inter bought Milito and Motta for 39mil thats 11mil for Milito and Motta.
And with the other fees Inter spend 51.500.000 €.

  • Flash

    Bayern spend more than us???

  • Sam

Where did they get Inter 99million from? Maybe in value sure, but in terms of actual money spent they haven't spent that much. I read that a large part of the fees for Milito and Motta was from 4 players going the other way.

  • Theo Walcott 14

    Real Madrid 257.400.000 €
    Manchester City 139.300.000 €
    FC Barcelona 111.500.000 €
    Inter Mailand 99.500.000 €
    FC Bayern München 74.700.000 €
    OLYMPIQUE LYON 72.500.000 €

  • Chygrinski. True, along with Keirisson. I'm pretty sure Barca spent more than Lyon.

  • Stanley

What about barca didn't they buy Ibra,Maxwell and another cb?

  • I think they must have cost a considerable amount. But I'm not sure. I had forgotten that they were payed to take Etoo. :)

  • Sam

You sure Thomas? From what I've just searched it doesn't seem like they've spent tonnes of money. Aren't Eto'o and Sneijder the only two big signings. Sneijder I read cost them €15million and they didn't have to pay for Eto'o as he was a part trade plus money for Ibra.

How much did Motta and Milito cost?

  • Nah, Inter are probably in front of Lyon.

  • Michael

    Top 3

    1.Real Madrid
    2.Man City
    3.Lyon

  • Pride of Lyon

By the end of the mercato, Lyon should surely stand amongst the biggest spenders in Europe. Does anyone know the "spenders table"? Real Madrid being on the top and
    Man City not far behind.
