Perrin: “I sleep just fine, thanks”
By: Inara | April 24th, 2008Alain Perrin on the atmosphere surrounding him at the moment:
“It doesn’t stop me from sleeping. We’ll see what happens at the end of the season. The president said he’d make a decision after the last league match (against Auxerre on May 17). Regardless, my departure has been the main topic all season. But I see myself at Lyon next year…at least right now. It’s not like I’ve gotten a phone call from Real Madrid…I prefer to live day to day. I don’t even know where I’ll go on vacation. I only know about the upcoming games leading to Euro 2008.”
In case some of you have been living in a cave in recent months, you know that Perrin’s job is in danger DESPITE Lyon most likely winning a domestic double. He recently stated that he’s never received full support since becoming manager, but that “it’s nothing new under the Lyon sun.”
As for Aulas, he hasn’t confirmed or denied anything, just that the situation would be examined after the season ends. But he did state that Lyon’s aspirations will take on a European emphasis next season, something that he feels Perrin is not capable of handling.

I really hope that Aulas sets the CL as the objective numero uno next season. It was obviously not the case this time when they decided to go with Alain Perrin. With or without D. Deschamps Lyon need to set their sights high and pick someone who will instill the kind of confidence that the OL players need to get past the Manchester Uniteds of the tournament.

Meh. Good riddance. Fact is, and Aulas probably knows this, any manager could win the league with Lyon with the resources and money we possess. Hell, we’d probably win the league with Juninho being a player/coach. It’s all about how much we win by (no offense Ligue 1 competition).
Aulas is right. Europe is the target. I mean seriously, 7 straight appearances and no glory. I get sad just thinking about it.

Think about some of the teams who have appeared in more than 7 competitions but are still waiting for a title. Arsenal is considered a European powerhouse but despite a final appearance recently, they have little to show for their European campaigns, likewise Chelsea. Many European ‘powerhouses’ have either not won a title ever or have not seen a title in 10-30 years. Patience is needed, the club continues to improve every year, as evident by the new stadium being built.

Patience? Tell that to Perrin. He’s about to get fired after getting Lyon to the knockout rounds and “sucking” in the league to an extent. In any other club, a manager would probably get a raise. Aulas knows winning in Europe is of dire need. It gets you the attention you deserved and earned. Like Liverpool. They haven’t won the Premier League title for 18 years, yet every 15-18 year old from South America to Japan wants to play for them.

i think people are too hard on perrin. if you think about it, what did he do that was so wrong this year to justify firing him after potentionally winning lyon’s first double?
it wasn’t his fault there were lots of injuries to important players. it wasn’t his fault that he arrived at a team that had sold off several senior players (tiago, malouda, abidal, wiltord, cacapa) in exchange for new faces in the locker room.
perrin made some tactical mistakes (barcelona away, rangers at home), but he eventually stopped with the crazy experimenting. his using benzema on the flank is shady, but he’s hardly the only one. anelka at chelsea and henry at barca are in the same boat, at far bigger clubs that are still in the champions league.
lyon’s domestic campaign wasn’t easy this year and there have been more losses than last year, but that’s a good thing. Lyon losing means the other clubs are fighting harder since obviously the gap in quality between the teams is huge. i’d rather see small teams punch above their weight than watch games where teams like chelsea and manchester united prove their vast “superiority” by putting six goals past a derby team that wouldn’t even hack it in france’s third division. people always complain about how uncompetitive the french league is, and now that we have competition, people are upset. you want a manager who is daring, but anytime he takes risks, people get on his back if it turns out to be a mistake.
and i am not getting the deschamps infatuation. he took monaco to the finals just once. the next year, they fizzed out in the round of 16. and the year after, deschamps quit early on because of bad results. he led juventus back to serie a unconvincingly.
perrin needs to stay at least another year. managing a club like lyon is a long term project. now that he’s had a year of getting to know the players and them getting to know him, and now that he knows how to handle the pressure and he knows what to expect, next year you can decide if he’s good or bad for lyon.

i just want to add that i don’t think perrin is an amazing manager or anything. but then i don’t think deschamps is that much better that he’s a guaranteed improvement over perrin.
a club can’t just go out and buy a manager who was successful at one club and then expect him to repeat that with another club. in fact, it’s foolish to think that any champions league campaign can be planned out like that. winning experience only takes you so far. if being a european winner was all it took then ancelotti, who won the cup last year, wouldn’t be about to be fired for taking milan to the uefa cup.

….havent posetd in a while lol
lol, Perrin says he sees himself with the club next year.
I dont. Someone should ask him where he would be without Benzema and Toulalan. He’d probably say nothing and walk away. Perrin’s lifeline gets thinner and thinner as each day passes and as one of his players goes down to injuries.
What i give Perrin credit for, is his demeanor when all his CB were Disappearing. Other than that, his rearranging of formations ( The whole Benzema as a winger deal ), his Ben Arfa ignoring and his late instilling of Bodmer in the lineup doesnt do it for me.
Another Manager would be best.

I hope Perrin stays. He has been unfairly criticized. Ok, he messed up a bit with the CL matches, but realistically, he won the peace cup and may offer Lyon 2 more cups this season.
I fully agree with Mark.
Deschamps is too much for Lyon. He would make a revolution in the club and I really don’t want that. Lyon has been doing great in the last 6 years, why should we change everything?
In CL, in the last 5 years, we reached the quarter finals 3 times and the last 16 twice… Is it that bad?
How many clubs in Europe can say that much?Lyon supporters are too much in a hurry. Lyon was in Ligue 2 less than 20 years ago… people tend to forget that. The progress is huge, and I don’t want to hear people say : “Yes, but no progress has been made in 5 years”. Progress is still on its way. In 3 years there will be a new stadium… that’s a huge leap!

I want to raise the topic of the transfer window.
The LFP has just decided that the transfer window should close on the 17th of August.
This decision is really bad for the Ligue 1, as foreign clubs would still be able to buy players until the 31st. It is just the French clubs who wouldn’t be able to buy anymore.
So to sum up, the French league will be even poorer after the 31st, as clubs will lose important players in between the 17th and 31st without being able to replace them.
It is shameful of the LFP to take such decisions. Sorry to say that, but Thiriez is an idiot. I am surprised there is not a bigger uproar about this decision.Posted from

Wait, WHAT?
How did I miss that?
And what in the world is the LFP thinking? That decision doesn’t make ANY sense. What’s the point of not allowing clubs to buy until the 31st if other leagues are still allowed to?

I’m surprised about this decision too.
Maybe Thiriez think that will help french clubs to keep their better players.
“Sorry, Hatem, we cannot sell you to Arsenal… We’re on 18th August, if I sell you I won’t be able to replace you…
Not my fault. LFP did it”

Perrin’s biggest mistake is the Ben Arfa situation. Everyone laughs at the fact he’d rather bench him and use Govou as first sub.
He should adapt the system to the quality of his players, not the contrary.Posted from

That’s my point Inara. You haven’t heard about it because because noone talks about it. It is as if it was just a small news…
The lfp needs new management… the clone of vincingetorix has lost all common sense.Posted from

I will do some research on this and do a post about it. It’s ridiculous really. After a full night of sleep, I still don’t get it.

Pride of Lyon, I think you are thinking too small on the manager situation at OL. Maybe Deschamps isnt that much better than Perrin but Lyon need to examine their options. Its clear that Perrin is not a CL quality manager. Isn’t that what everyone wants? Are you so afraid of change that you are not willing to take any risks? Not taking risks is the biggest mistake any club or person can make. You say that Deschamps is a revolutionary and didn’t accomplish much. Well when was the last time that a club with Monaco’s budget reached the CL finals? that was a HUGE accomplishment. Of course we don’t know if he can do the same thing at Lyon but the club needs to decide that the CL is the MAIN goal. Not settling for a manager that can win the league and maybe a cup and thats it, because that’s exactly what Aulas was going for when he decided to recruit Perrin.

Perrin is good choice for Lyon, but he needs a little more energy. I saw game against Rangers at Iborx. Benzema scores third goal. Everyone was so happy, run up and down on the field, but Perrin was soooo cold, and that is not good. But he deserves another chance.

Aren’t we playing the reserves in the next cup match? If so…the double doesn’t seem as likely as possible…

I don’t know, I can’t believe that Aulas would turn down the chance to win a trophy that he has yet to capture since he became president. Plus the players really want it. Plus if Lyon won the double in both the men and women’s division…how cool would that be??
I think Lyon will field their starting 11 against Sedan and will then pray that Benzema is rested enough for the game against Nancy. If Lyon can snag an early lead, hopefully Perrin will have good substitutions.

We haven’t won the cdf since 73, so Perrin may field a semi-strong lineup, but we have 2 big matches before that. If we can pick up a victory against Caen (who might be thinking upset after their mind blowing win over PSG), then we might have leverage with Bordeaux playing Marseille next week. Both teams definitely will be playing to win with one fighting for the league and latter fighting for that final CL spot.

I bet Bordeaux-Marseille will be a snooze fest, despite both teams having potent strikers and the ability to notch big wins. If there are more than two goals scored in that game, I’ll be very surprised.
Anyway, best for us would be if Marseille won that game. Bordeaux are basically guaranteed second place as things stand right now but would be less of a threat to our title, and I would rather see Marseille in the CL than Nancy, who may not even make it out of the qualifying rounds.
