Player(s) of the Year, Baby
By: Inara | April 30th, 2008
The nominees for Ligue 1’s Player of the Year have just been announced today. While it’s no surprise that a Lyon player should be among the four nominated, this season, there are two!
Awarded by the UNFP (Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionnels) each season, players all across France vote for who they think was the best player in Le Championnat.
This year, Karim Benzema and Jeremy Toulalan will be vying with Marseille’s Mahamdou Niang and Bordeaux’s Wendel for the top individual prize in France. The winners will be announced on May 17th on Canal+ in an awards ceremony.
All four players deserve the award. I’m not big on Wendel, but he’s been immense for Bordeaux and is one of the main reasons they are fighting Lyon for the title. Niang doesn’t get the attention he deserves, but he’s been the real hero at Marseille this year.
But my guess is that Benzema will win. He’s at the top of the scoring charts this year, has single-handedly kept Lyon at the top of the table, did his best to prolong Lyon’s Champions League adventure, and propelled them to the French Cup semifinals.
He also has history on his side - the last three Ligue 1 MVPs were all Lyonnais - Florent Malouda in 2007, Juninho in 2006, and Michael Essien in 2005. Before that, Didier Drogba won it in 2004, and Pauleta in 2003 and 2002. Zinedine Zidane and David Ginola have also won the award. So this is a very elite list of players, and Benzema joining the group at such a young age is a huge coup for him.
However, the fact that Toulalan was even nominated is I think even more impressive. First of all, he’s the unsung hero of Lyon and tends to be overlooked by everyone outside of his own team. And unlike the other three nominees, Toulalan is not an attacker and hasn’t scored a single goal this year (he’s actually only scored once in his eight years in the French top flight). But anyone who watches him knows how important he is to the team and how crucial his contributions is. It’s not just his Makelele skills. His hard working ethics, tough as nails mentality, and never say die attitude are crucial to Lyon’s team spirit. In the past few weeks that he’s been absent, Lyon just fell apart.
So if Toulalan won…I’d be very happy.
EDIT: Hatem Ben Arfa is one of the nominees for Best Young Player of the Year. Samir Nasri won it last year, Franck Ribery the year before, and Jeremy Toulalan in 2005.
Mathieu Bodmer’s second goal against Bordeaux has been nominated for Ligue 1’s goal of the year (see below). You can check out all the categories and nominees here.

I hope whoever deserves the titles wins it. Even if it’s not a Lyon player! Thanks for updating the blog so often Inara, love to read it! Cheers!

Toulalan is the most ego-less player in football. i wonder if he’s a buddhist.

errrrrrr….Michael Essien.
I Hate the fact that his name was mentioned in this article lol.
Anyway, if anyone deserves to win the trophy with would either have to be Benzema or Toulalan. Those other two candidates are good, but both Lyonnais players have been IMMENSE. Without them ( like i said before ) Perrin would be out of a job and Lyon might be somewhere is 3rd or 4th place. I dont want to jinx it, hopefully i dont, but : ” It would be Blasphemous if Benz or Lalan didnt win it. “

I always like to read comments saying “if this or that player had not been there, we would be 3rd or 4th”…
It is the same for all the best teams in Europe! What is Manchester without Ronaldo? 3rd or 4th.
What is Bayern without Ribery and Tony? 3rd or 4th…Perrin has been clever enough to use Benzema. He was benched most of the time with the other coaches.

I think Benzema will win award. He deserved that. He scores in first ten games, ten goals. Now he have on his count 30 goals that he scored this season. He is better than Wendell, he is better than Niang. He will win. He is champion.

You know how I LOVE Benzema.
But I would be really sad if Toulalan don’t win this awards.
We see more than never that he’s the most important player in our team.
He didn’t do a single bad game in ALL the season. He’s an E.T. ! Toul”Alf”lan !
Benzema had an incredible season, I agree, Niang and Wendel too, but Toulalan … he’s THE man. Really. Each game I see in Gerland or on TV, I’m astonished to see him everywhere on the pitch. He really deserves to win. But he doesn’t score goals… and I’m afraid people prefers strikers than working mans.

it would be great if Lyon were awarded a penalty and the team gave it to Toulalan to take, like Chelsea did for Makalele last season.

Jo : “But he doesn’t score goals… and I’m afraid people prefers strikers than working mans.”
But, Michael Essien won the award in 2005, he’s not known for scoring goals. He’s known for being a midfield Beast than can stop the opposing teams offense ( Gosh ! i hate him……..but love him at the same time lol).
Like i said before, its either going to be benzema or Toulalan. For me, Toulalan has the inside track on the award.
Maybe while Toulalan gives his acceptance speech, he can Thank Inara for all the love he gets from her……….promotionally speaking of course

I have been emailing Toulalan chicken soup and kisses for the past couple of weeks…you know, to help with his recovery. Anything I can do for “La Toule.” He really deserves to win, and for me, is Lyon’s most hard working player. Benzema might have been scoring all the goals, but Toulalan has done everything else. But Jo says, he doesn’t score, and people remember goals more than tackles.
Lefutur - that Buddhist comment actually made me laugh. He does have his inner peace - nothing fazes that man. ANd I’d love to see him take a penalty. Last year, during the Lens game, Juninho allowed Alou Diarra to take it.
Ronald - True, Essien wasn’t a goal scorer, but he did score some goals. And Essien’s attitude was a lot more…extroverted. So you were always aware of him even if he was doing nothing. Toulalan is the opposite. Even when he’s doing everything, people aren’t aware of them. He reminds me of a hotel maid that everyone ignores but expects her to do all the work.

And before I forget, Ben Arfa has been nominated as Ligue 1’s best young player of the year, along with Yohan Cabaye (Lille), Mevlut Erding (Sochaux), and Miralem Pjanic (Metz).
Mathieu Bodmer’s second goal against Bordeaux has been nominated for goal of the year. See the post for the video.
Coupet (rightfully) misses out on best gk of the year. Oh, and this is the first time in a long time that a Lyon coach doesn’t even make the coach of the year short list.

Why alway people don’t appreciate players who work, who are invisible on the field, but they are do soo many things for team, just like Toulalan. Benzema socres many goals, important goals, but without Toula, Lyon like, especialy their middlefield, like lost ships. But if Benz win award I will be happy, and proud.

Inara - you forgot to mention the Offside Podcast that you were apart of. Even though i already heard it ( i wanted to get christian’s answer about LDU Quito ), other might want to listen as well ( You address the whole PSG fiasco and Hatem Ben Afra and Grenier )

I think that because its the players who each vote (as opposed to the public and maybe even as opposed to sports journalists), Toulalan may stand a better chance.
Fingers crossed (though if Benzema that would be great too)Posted from

Oh good call, Ronald.
Last weekend, I talked about PSG and was asked about Ben Arfa and Grenier and their futures at Lyon on the Offside’s podcast. You can check it out here.
Storm - I hope so!
And it’s official, I’m a Toulalan fan girl. But at least no one can accuse me of making a shallow choice!

By the way… I’m wondering why Pablo Correa isn’t nominated for the best coach.
The season he did with Nancy is pretty much impressive. A lot more than Claude Puel, which is a coach that I like very much.I think Ben Arfa will be the young player of the year, for the same reason that Alain Perrin isn’t nominated for the best coach !
And for the most beautiful goal, I would like to see Bodmer winning (I think he scored the most DIFFICULT goal, but not the most beautiful). But I’m pretty sure that will be Valbuena, because that’s a public vote.
So here are my bets :
Ligue 1 :
Best player : Benzema
Best young player : Ben Arfa
Best Goalkeeper : Mandanda
Best coach : Laurent Blanc
Most beautiful goal : ValbuenaLigue 2 :
Best player : Hoarau
Best Goalkeeper : Christophe Revault
Best coach : Mehmet BazdarivicYour time to bet !

I just took a look at Canal+ website.
You can see here the 5 most beautiful goals of the year :
http://www.canalplus.fr/c-sport/c-football/pid2484-c-les-trophees-unfp.html?And just take a look at the poll… As I predicted, everyone vote for Valbuena…
So sad !Posted from

Yeah, I figured it would be. No surprise. Canal+ loves Marseille, and so do their audiences.
I’m also surprised Correa isn’t on the list, especially since his Nancy squad is still within reach of a CL spot and yet they made no signings last summer and sold their best defender.
The best goalkeeper is undoubtedly going to be between Mandanda and Lloris. That’s a tough choice since they have both done insanely well.

Mandanda has made three mistakes that cost goals this season.
You can barely give one to Lloris (OM goal in fact). There really isn’t a debate IMO. Lloris is one of the best in the world, while Mandanda still has ways to go.
The OM bias might kill the Nice shadow though.Posted from

Bodmer’s goal is much better than Valbuena, no debate.
However, Pjanic should win the young player award, mainly because Ben Arfa barely played.Posted from

Correa just get his DEPF diploma. That’s why he wasn’t on the short list for the best coach

But now, he is, instead of Christian Gourcuff.
That seems totally logical to me !Posted from
