Proof that Lyon ISN’T utter crap
By: Inara | April 24th, 2007It’s been an altogether depressing week for Lyon fans. Right now, the UEFA Champions League semifinals are going on, but Juninho & Co. can only watch on the television. They won their sixth title, but no one cares except Houllier and the statisticians employed by the French Football Federation. Lyon’s striker crisis is still continuing, with Benzema out injured, Baros accused of racism, and Fred out of favor with Houllier. Oh, and Lyon have scored only one goal in the past 450 minutes of play.
So things are just peachy at the Stade de Gerland at the moment.
But just as I was about to give up on Ligue 1 and switch to the Belgian Juliper League for excitement, I saw this and was reminded just how beautiful Lyon are when all cylinders are firing and everyone’s happy. It’s from the first three months of this season, from August to mid-October.
Lyon played like this until December, but as soon as they came back from winter holidays, the players were replaced by pod people pretending to Les Gones. If Lyon had even played half as well in 2007 as they did in 2006, then they would’ve have had so many stupid losses, and they might have progressed in the CL.
There’s always next year, I suppose.

What an exhilarating yet ultimately depressing video. What the hell happened?

What the hell happened exactly. Lyon looked like the best club team in the world for the first half of the campaign, and they looked as a squad to be together and committed. After the break they never got it going and it has been poor ever since. Maybe they need to start out slow next year and build up the momentum after the break.

It was like Lyon just shut down after winter. Maybe the players were running on momentum too long, and despite what people say, I honestly believe that the mid and bottom table clubs in France are better than in most other leagues, so they put up a really hard fight for Lyon.
Notice how teams like Troyes, Nice, Sedan, etc, will only concede one goal?
Whatever the problem is, I hope that Aulas finds the solution. Maybe Houllier will have to pace his players next year, not overplaying Juninho, Malouda, Cris, etc.
