Quelle Surprise…
By: Inara | September 29th, 2007Lyon once again prove to be Lens’ undoing. I actually feel quite sorry for Lens because they are a good team, but for some reason, they can’t find a solution against Lyon. On the bright side of things, Lyon are finally sitting at the top of the table, exactly where they’re supposed to be (they are tied with Nancy, who have a game in hand).

The 3-0 scoreline was completely fair, though the game took a while to gain momentum. The first half hour could have gone either way, with Lens being dangerous on the counterattack and having more shots on target. But near the end of the first half, Milan Baros sent Fabio Santos a pretty ball, and the oft-neglected midfielder finally opened his account with Lyon with a very nice goal.
In the second half, Lyon began dominating heavily and pressed Lens everywhere, and with Lens running out of energy, it was obvious that Lyon would score again. At the 81st minute, Kim Kallstrom blasted a rocket into the back of the net from 25 yards away. And finally, Karim Benzema, not wanting to be left out, rounded off the night with a goal at the 90th minute.
The goals:
Fabio Santos 42′ 1-0
Kim Kallstrom 81′ 2-0
Karim Benzema 90′ 3-0
Player performances:
Perrin opted to utilize a significant level of player rotation and turnover. He’s still trying to find the best tactics, because unlike Houllier, who just reused Le Guen’s formula and most of his old players, Perrin is pretty much starting from scratch and is determined to maximize a player’s potential. Sometimes it backfires (Barcelona), but sometimes it works out very well (Peace Cup, Metz).
Vercoutre
Clerc - Squillaci - Bodmer - Grosso
Santos - Toulalan - Juninho
Keita - Baros - Kallstrom
Since I didn’t watch the game, I can’t say too much about player performances besides what I gleaned from match commentary. First of all, Fabio Santos proved today that he deserves to play. He hasn’t had any L1 time at all this year, and last year, he played in only a handful of matches after being bought during the January transfer window.
Juninho had a quiet match and was subbed out for Benzema, who just scored his ninth L1 goal. Kader Keita is showing a lot of improvement, and Jeremy Toulalan dominated as usual. He protected the Squillaci-Bodmer duo all match. As for Kallstrom, it took him a while to get used to playing as a LW, but once he settled, he did well.
Analysis:
Well, it’s clear that Perrin was already thinking ahead to Tuesday’s Champions League match against Rangers. He chose to conserve the two players who get tired out the most (Juninho, Sidney Govou, and Karim Benzema), made sure that Hatem Ben Arfa - who wasn’t even on the bench for today’s match - got a full 90 minutes with the reserves, started Francois Clerc as opposed to Anthony Reveillere, and also lessened the defensive burden on Jeremy Toulalan by having four midfielders on the pitch today.
Alain Perrin says:
“It’s a confidence boost for Tuesday, which will be another tough game. More and more, I feel this is a team who enjoy playing together. We avoided injury and I was able to give playing time to some fringe players. It’s a good evening for us.”

Nice match, Benzema is a beast! And I still like Baros =)
The satisfactions of this match are in my opinion Keita and Fabio Santos, who showed some very nice things tonight.Posted from

The Benzema goal is amazing. This is just some next level type shit. Kallstrom scored the exact same goal with Sweden less than a month ago even though this time he was even further away.
I think this is the type of game where Lens will miss Itandje.
And I notice you put your black jersey out for a spin. It’s the better one.Posted from

Toulalan was exceptionnal again and key to Kallstrom’s blast of a goal.
Dos Santos had a great first half but hit the wall in the second.
Keita was good but not at full strength.
Baros was frustrating as usual, but dished a nice assist for the openning goal.
Vercoutre made an awful move when he went out to meet Aruna on a counter attack behind Lyon’s defense. It resulted in a lucky break, as he managed to touch the lob and then the ref closed his eyes when Toulalan fouled Boukhari with nobody in nets at the 16 meter line.
Grosso was very good.Lens played such a weak game and far from their standards, but that’s been the case this season. They have a better team than they show right now.

Note to self: practice practice practice! Who wants to be my pen pal?

イナラ: I hadn’t even noticed.
Strong and controlled game from Lyon. Glad I could see more of Santos: Perrin should line him up more often or we are doomed to tire Toulalan out or worse, get him injured.
Ben Arfa was left out of this game, Benzema and Juninho played only a bit…
The lineout against Rangers seems to be appearing.Posted from

This is a good win. Benzema wasn’t being defended. The quality of other ligue 1 teams needs to improve before Lyon wins the Champions League.

Inara,
I have to disagree with you that Lens is a good team this season. Lens WAS a good team before they got rid of all their players like Jussie, Thomert, Jemma, Itandje, Seydou Keita, Barul etc. etc. Look at the crap they replaced them with and you get what you get on the field.

Ben Arfa was said to be lightly injured.

Didn’t get to see the match, just heard some of the radio commentary radio, but here are the player marks from L’Equipe
Vercoutre 5
Clerc 5
Squillaci 6
Bodmer 5
Grosso 4.5
Toulalan 5
Fabio Santos 6 (and man of the match)
Juninho 4.5
Keita 4.5
Baros 4.5
Kallstrom 5These seem tough marks right? The report was not too flattering about Lyon either - suggesting that Lyon made heavy work of the match. Seems strange for a 3:0 score line. There was some suggestion however that a several of the key players were holding back to make sure they would be 100% for the Rangers game. We also had 66% possesion.

If Ben Arfa was lightly injured then fine, but I would have liked to see him play today. If he isnt used against Rangers I am going to be very angry. The kid showed his potential against Metz, and now he hasnt seen any action. Stupid. I played with a slighty torn quad in my left leg, my planting leg, and still managed two goals and two assists yesterday. Its not like you cant play through a “slight” knock.
Also, way to rest players, seeing as how everyone ended up playing anyways. Perrin has no confidence in his reserves, if Belhadj cant drop in for Grosso and Benzema is brought on in a game that was already won. Tsk tsk, I dont like this anymore. Its to much like Ged, there is to much predictability in our team and playing style.

That was a very good match, with an awful referee. Too much mistakes, he wasn’t in his game.
Lens (as usual against Lyon) wasn’t as good as they can be. That’s 2 offensives teams, so there’s always spaces to attack, even if Lyon had the ball possession.
I’m so happy for Fabio Santos. And I’m not surprised. That’s a long time I say we have to let his chance to prove he’s good. I’ve seen him many times at the practices, he his very good. He never plays and is in a new championship. And he can be better, believe me !Posted from

I wanted to see Mounier and Paillot. Especially Mounier. But the score was only 1-0 until the last ten minutes, and by then I think Perrin had used all his substitutions. Lens still could have scored a freak goal until Kallstrom scored the second.
I hope Ben Arfa’s injury isn’t serious and his absence was a precaution more than anything else.
