Toulouse vs. Lyon

By: John | May 29th, 2009

This may be “Kongo Kim’s” last match for OL and Sidney’s too; wink.
Week 35
Sat May 30, 2009
Stade Alle Gabriel Benes
3:00 PM(21:00CET, 20:00GMT)

Well, we’ve taken care of business and OL are now back in the CL,albiet in qualifying rounds, but hey, it’s better than the alternatives. Last week against Caen, Lyon continued to play solidly: we put three in the net, almost shut-down Steve Savidan, two of our most beloved veterans scored what may have been their final goals for OL, Juni netting his 100th goal and Sidney Govou his 70th I believe, and we Gerland witnessed an emotional send-off for one of Lyon’s greatest son’s Juninho Pernambucano. Lyon have gotten back on-track and finished the season with an exclamation point. So, Saturday’s game vs. Toulouse, thankfully will mean nothing- except to Toulouse, who are playing for a spot in the Europa League; and I guess we can salivate over Gignac and check-out two players Lyon were linked to in rumors: Sissoko and Capoue.

I won’t inculde “team histories” or “recent form” or any of that other filler, because this game is meaningless to OL, and Puel might empty the bench(I wrote this Monday, but seeing today’s line-up, I guess Puel wants to go out with a win). I think alot of us were hoping to see some of the CFA players get time, but Puel seems to be taking this game more serious than it really is.

Le groupe lyonnais : Lloris, Vercoutre, Clerc, Mensah, Boumsong, Réveillère, Bodmer, Toulalan, Källström, Makoun, Govou, Ederson, Pjanic, Mounier, Keita, Benzema, Piquionne, Tafer.

Out: Cris, Grosso, Juninho, and Delgado.

Lineup:

Mine:

Vercoutre
Clerc-Boumsong-Mensah-Reveillere
Pjanic-Bodmer-Kallstrom
Govou—————-Mounier
Piquionne

L’Equipe’s- which is more probable:

Lloris
Reveillere-Boumsong-Mensah-Kallstrom
Pjanic-Toulalan-Makoun
Govou-Benzema-Ederson

Although I’d modify that into a 4-5-1 with Ederson at RCMF, Pjanic at RMF and Govou as LMF; or

Lloris
Reveillere-Boumsong-Mensah-Kallstrom
Ederson-Toulalan-Makoun
Pjanic—————-Govou
Benzema

Cristian Rodriguez could take the place of Mounier if he is offered for Remy(shame I think Mounier is good, and we may find ourselves saying the same things we said about Remy regards to mounier-that we shouldnt have let him go)Remy-Benzema-Rodriguez sounds quality to me.Besides Nice cant exactly charge us that much he had a good season but not a great one ; anymore than 10mill would be daylight robbery for Loic.(despite the fact he may be worth a lot more in a years time)

I think Remy-Benzema-Mounier would be really good, all three know each other well from lyon youth teams and french national setups, and Id say they were all friends off the pitch which makes for a good relationship and communication on the pitch. They can all grow as well,if they spent lets say two seasons in Remy-Benzema-Mounier it could be really special, that in front of Ederson-Toulalan-Makoun would be an exciting midfield and attack and then it would be the defence which needed to be sorted and then after that would could be really competitive. For now though its all ifs and buts, what will really happen will probably be very different, all I hope is that are number two striker isnt another name like Piquionne such as a Pagis or Dindane-not who we want to seewe want like Lisandro or Oliveira also Gignac has started to grow on me once he reached fifteen league goals I liked him a lot more because it proved he wasnt just a flash in the pan.

Where does poor Pjanic fit into all this? :( We’re like wasting one of the biggest playmaking talents on earth, i Kinda see a new version of Iniesta in him.

I always wanted to see remy-benz-ben arfa develop and play together but oh well.
Alex: As for Pjanic, I assume he will be coming-off the bench alot. Probably after Benz leaves, I think we’ll see him at right wing and Remy pushed over to striker. I have a feeling he will mature rapidly this season and the season after that will be his year. Hopefully those two will stick around for sometime and it should be a joy to watch that duo develop together. Or he will have to wait for one of the midfield axis to leave for a spot there.

Guys, you are talking like Remy has already signed for us.In the moment we havent signed anyone.I hope that in the next season Pjanic will play more. The midfield Ederson-Toulalan-Makoun was very poor this season, and Pjanic would be a good idea.

Ederson rarely played in the midfield this season. He played on the wing mostly and as an attacking midfielder behind Benzema for a select few matches. You guys are panicking, the transfer season has just started. No worries, unless we get into mid july (when training starts) and we have no one new or decent in, then we panick.

    Apparently, Lyon are after Vieira.
As for putting a front line Remy Benzema Mounier, I am gainst. We just can’t leave Govou out of the starting 11. He is one of our main leaders. You don’t make a strong team without leaders (except Arsenal).

As for Vieira, I can see the value in terms of popularity for the club, but he is not what we need. We actually don’t need anything in mudfield. We need 1 (or 2) good back up or first striker (still hoping fo us to play 4-4-2).
And of course 1 CB and a back up left back. That’s it.

I also agree with deschamps saying that a team needs a play maker. And although Ederson and Pjanic are there to replace juninho, they can’t take in the role he played.

I still want to see 4-4-2:
    Lloris
    Clerc-Boumsong-Cris-Grosso
    Govou(Keita)-Ederson(Bodmer)-Toulalan(Makoun)-Kallstrom(Pjanic)
Benzema (Tafer) – ??? experienced stiker 27+ (Piquionne)

    Govou(Keita)-Ederson(Pjanic)-Toulalan(Makoun)-Kallstrom(Delgado)

Kalltrom is to slow for left wing we need somone who will beat his marker, quick and get balls in the box not a slow utility man Mounier or Rodriguez would be better,or Bastos of course.

Also pride of Lyon, your line up is virtually exactly the same of that of the line up from this season which will ultimately mean Lyon failing once more that line up needs about three new faces added to it.

These links to vieira are ridiculous,I mean the first signings we make should be two strikers,LB,LW and a CB but a DM ?Why do we need a defencive midfielder. The only logic I can see is that maybe Vieira will replace Makoun at DM and Makoun will be given a more attacking role like Ederson.

We’re interested in Cissokho, Lisandro, and Vieira. I think Vieira would be good for us as he is a leader.

Alex-Vieira good for us ? Ok you tell me where he fits into the team, either he plays out of position(most probably to poor afect),DM,with Makoun becoming an AM or he doesnt play ever because of injuries like his last two or three seasons.Out of all the players we need Vieira ranks about last in the whole squad. John-really dont like that line up because but for probably a crappy striker coming in(yes theres talk of Lisandro and Dzeko)but it will probably be Pagis or someone on that scale. Your team is all but the same as what we had this season-which wasnt succesful. Im looking for
    Lloris
    Clerc-Boumsong/Naldo-Sarr-Grosso
    Toulalan-Makoun-Ederson
    Remy-Benzema-Mounier

with Makoun being a box to box midfielder,Ederson AM and Toulalan DM.

I think Bomer could be better in playmaking role than Ederson (for example, seems like he has pretty good on-touch-pass skills)… Makoun sometimes showed something in that way though..

Ronan: The problem with your line-up is, that while it’s ok for league play, it’s not a CL line-up. Remy and Mounier are too young to play at that level. I think mine includes solid veteran players, and a makoun-toul-kallstrom midfield is CL quality. But now that I think about it, we need a striker who can really score brought-in for my line-up to be really effective, which probably won’t happen. Now that Juni’s gone, Benzema will have to carry an even heavier load, and this is the main issue that needs to be resolved: we need a couple of scorers.

Im certainly not fooled by these Lisandro rumours although he is the calibre of forward we need,i would be astounded to see Lisandro in a Lyon shirt next season-its just to good to be true this rumour especially for a club like Lyon whos fans are always dissapointed come the summer and January. The thing is the players are there for Lyon there are numerous players I could list, so lyon just need to think. How I would love to have an hour with Aulas and bring a list of all my players and ask him why he wont try for them, and then ask for his thoughts on players he has sold who are now brilliant.

John-If we had two or three experienced players in the elevan playing with Remy-Benzema-Mounier,the trio would flourish.I actually have a squad-a whole wquad to show, which is realistic and definately CL semi final level.

Lloris Vercoutre Hartock Reveillere Clerc Gassama Mensah Boumsong Rami(Lille) Naldo(Bremen) Grosso Sylvinho Kolodziejczak Valdivia Mehamha Toulalan Makoun Ederson Bodmer Kallstrom Pjanic Leandro(Levadiakos F.C)Grenier Govou Keita(1 more chance)Delgado Rodriguez(Porto)Mounier Remy Blanco(AEK Athens)Benzema

I think Makoun could well be a good attacking midfielder, not quick but not slow. I dont think Makoun would be affective on the wings, however I do AM-he always seems to get into good attacking positions when given the chance-and if he is moved to AM those positions will only occur for him a lot more also he is a hard worker so he can really be a nuisance up front because defenders wont be willing to run with him come second half. However I would only realistically move Makoun to CM instead of DM because his defencive duties are important. Thats the only logical reason if Vieira came-so Makoun could be more attacking.

Yeah, it just seems to me that he’s much better with his head than with his feet. Most of his scores- with his feet- have come from poking the ball in from crosses or loose balls in the box. I just don’t see him getting many goals if he has to depend on his shooting abilities the further he gets from goal. His skills seem to be his heading ability, agressiveness in getting up field and in the box, and defense obviously. I do think he’s better suited for CM due to his agresivness getting up field and passing; leave defensive duties to Toulalan. That duo seems to me like the Viera-Toulalan relationship everyone was hoping for on the NT, except that Viera’s more skilled on O than Mak.
