“A Point is Good”…WTF?
By: Inara | May 4th, 2008I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read the post-match comments from the players last night.
Alain Perrin: “We didn’t win, but at least we didn’t lose.”
Jean-Alain Boumsong: “We must be happy with this point because it will be important in the next few days.”
Juninho: “We wanted to win and get away from Bordeaux, but getting a draw at Nice is a good result.”
Karim Benzema: “This is a good point earned. We didn’t lose against Nice, which is a very good team. We would have preferred a win to be safe, but the aim was not lose.”
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
A POINT IS A GOOD RESULT? SINCE WHEN?
Look, getting a point from Barcelona is a good result. But against the 9th placed side in France, it isn’t getting a point but losing two points. It’s not Christmas, so there’s no need to give away points for free. Nor do Lyon have such an insurmountable lead that they can afford to be charitable.
Before the optimists jump on my back, I just want to point out that I’m not criticizing their performance. I’m criticizing their attitude towards it. They’re practically grateful about the point they “earned.” Goddammit, I want to see some PASSION from the team. I want to see players stomping their feet and walking off the field in a huff. That’s infinitely preferable to the polite way Lyon act both during and after the game. Maybe Aulas should ask Hope Solo to come back to Lyon, except this time to play for the men’s team. At least she has balls and would tell it straight.
A draw should never be acceptable for a team like Lyon. Instead, they should be mad and treat it like a loss. They should be saying, “No, we aren’t happy with this result. We had a chance to go ahead and we didn’t. And that’s not okay.”
Lyon should be expecting victories both home and away, against every team on the table and in every competition. Do you think Manchester United would ever consider an away draw against West Ham a good result?

We’re not in Marseille there. It’s not blood, tears and whistles when we don’t have the three points and that’s great.
Honestly, i think everybody is aware of the situation but there wasn’t any professional errors to be angry, so no need to go burn tola vologe just like in Paris. It was too hot, every players was walking and was tired after the 60th minute. It would have been a miracle to score after that time.
We’ll see what happen against Nancy.

How is the heat a good excuse? May just started, and it’s only going to get hotter. They’re professional players and have played in the heat many times before. What do they plan to do during the Euros? Quit after 60 minutes? And why should they be tired? They just spent a week at the spa.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not angry at their performance. Nor am I saying the fans should get violent. But these repeated “a point is a good result” is getting on my nerves, and I’d like to see a sign from the players that they, you know, care about the fact that the only three wins they notched in the past two months were against Metz, Strasbourg, and Valenciennes, and Lyon struggled a lot in all three of those games.
I have no doubt that Lyon will be champions, nor do I doubt the quality of the players. But if Lyon wants to be a European club, they can’t have these hiccups in a league like France’s. In the second half the season, we’ve had nearly a full strength team, and since March, we’re only in two competitions (league and cup). And despite that, Aulas is whining about playing Sedan three days before Nancy, and the players are performing like they are still in the running for a quadruple.

When you win the league for seven straight years, there will be a motivation issue no matter what. I hope Lyon loses the title next year, because the level of complacency in the organization, not just the team, is pathetic right now.

I totally agree with you Inara.
But…
I think the lyonnais know that Nice did 0-0 against Bordeaux, same result against Lille and won at Paris in less than one month.
So that’s a team who play better against big teams, like many other clubs in Ligue 1 (Lens usually is that sort of club too…) than agaist “small” teams. And I’m pretty sure no one in Lyon staff see Bordeaux winning against Marseille tonight. So they are “casual” about their result

AND, Lyon want to preserve players against the media. So, when you say “that’s a good point”, that’s like “we manage to earn it”, and the Medias will not put you under pression and say “Lyon will lose his title, blablabla”…Look, any radios or TV said it was a bad operation for Lyon yesterday, not just one.
But I repeat I think you are right, Inara.

Lyon did not play well enough to win and I think they are proud of the fact that they earned a point instead of not getting points at all. Like Benzema said, our aim was not to lose. Imagine if they would have lost. Your post would be even more critical because they probably would have been more adamant in blaming the loss on the heat

Is anyone watching the Marseille – Bordeaux game? Marseille leads, Bordeaux is about to equalise, and the match is very entertaining! It’s also intimidating if you are a Lyon fan…

Damn! Just like I said, Bordeaux equalised through Wendel’s free kick. Now we should just pray they don’t score another…

Jao: But why should they be proud of earning a point? Their attitude should be that they lost two points.

And CRAP.
Chamakh scored in the 90th minute for Bordeaux, who are now winning. They are within two points of Lyon.

DAMN! Marseille 1-2 Bordeux

Do you realize what is happening?
Lyon still have to play Nancy and Auxerre, who are both capable of getting draws out of us. Nancy could actually beat us. But Bordeaux only have to play Sochaux and Lens, who are both near relegation.
Lyon might have lost their title yesterday. And we can kiss our dreams of a double goodbye since Lyon are sure to put out a crap side against Sedan on Wednesday.

Oooohhh! Bordeaux scores in stoppage time, and yes, it’s over. Girondins win at the Velodrome, our lead is down to 2 points and we’re officially in a hell of a mess. Bravo for Bordeaux, from what I’ve seen in the second half, they deserved the victory. Now everything is up to us…

its easier now to appreciate the frustration of this post.

Bordeaux TOTALLY deserved to win.
Next week will probably be the most exciting… and stressful of my entire Lyon’s fan life !WE HAVE TO be with our players… ! SO GO ON !
Allez Lyon !

And I have to add that the most terrible point is (and you cannot guess how that make me mad… and sad…) that even if we win against Nancy, we cannot be sure to be champions at home…
So, that would mean no party for us, the supporter who had a very tough time this season. That would be THE FIRST TIME EVER for Lyon to not celebrate the title with the supporters, at the end of a game at Gerland.

I am glad Bordeaux won. Lyon players won’t be as complacent in the next games… or at least shouldn’t afford to. It is also a good way to keep people interested in the league. I would actually like Bordeaux to win the next game and Lyon to draw.
This would force the players to play on the last day. Lyon may actually learn a lot from this.Jo – I am sure you had a more stressful game against Lens for the 1st title. Or PSV in the quarters of CL 4 years ago.
It is really good to see Bordeaux at the top and playing well.

Can everyone just cheer the f**k up? Why doesn’t anyone believe in their team? This is not what Fans are supposed to do. To mourn before anything even has happened. They aimed not to lose and they accomplished that! Now their aim is to win and believe YOU me, that’s exactly what they’re gonna do. Jesus christ, reading these posts makes me wonder how much of a fan you guys really are. Not believing in them when they are having a bad time? Is that what you’d expect your fans to do? CHEER THA FU*K UP !!! ALLEZ LYON !!!!!!

mrCham – you must have missed all those games Lyon were supposed to win but didn’t (champions league, league cup final, etc). Lyon are shit under pressure, and the only reason they win Ligue 1 every year is because it’s over 38 games. But when it comes to do or die matches, no team is as good at falling apart during crucial moments as Lyon.

Well, speaking for myself, I have a lot of belief in the squad. And of course I will support them no matter what, even if they for some odd reason have a Valencia like season (I hope that never happens!). But I also have high expectations because I know they are capable of so much more than the half-assed displays on the pitch that I’ve been seeing in the past few weeks. As dedicated fans, we should question why this is happening. I love our players, but I don’t accept it when they play well below their standards.
In the past five league games, Lyon have only won a single one, and that was against Strasbourg. That’s unacceptable when it’s the business end of the season. Lyon being casual about the Nice game because they thought that Bordeaux would lose at Marseille was a huge mistake on their part. And though I don’t want to agree with what Clement said about, his point is valid in the sense that Lyon don’t handle pressure well. Even before the Nice game, I figured that Lyon would draw against Nancy, but that would be okay if Lyon won at Nice and Auxerre. But now Lyon have to win against Nancy in a do or die match, and Nancy are a REALLY tough team to play against. It’s not that hard to imagine OL being unable to score against the tightest defense in the league.

“Jo – I am sure you had a more stressful game against Lens for the 1st title”
I was stressed, that’s right… but I wasn’t still a Lyon supporter in 2002. I always have been Lensois ! It’s a family stuff
So the result did not make me happy in 2002.And believe me, I’m more stressed by Lens next games by now than by Lyon’s situations.
My 2 loving teams are having hard time…
That’s why I wrote : “in my entire lyon’s fan life”Posted from

If we can’t defeat Nancy at home, then we don’t deserve to be champions. Simple as that. Bordeaux plays extremely well and very motivated, it wouldn’t be unfair if they were crowned as champions. I believe, however, that we’ll make it, why shouldn’t we? Why should the future ‘european conquerors’ fear a team like Nancy? Girondins defeated a Marseille side desperate for a victory in front of their own fans, and that is after trailing 1:0 in the 80th minute. If we, in contrast, can’t get 4 points (’cause that’s what we need) out of Nancy and Auxerre, then what the hell, let’s fire Perrin and think about next season. But like I said, I believe we’ll make it. Allez Lyon!

Perrin is a loser.
And our players are following him.Last year Houiller would never ever have shown any sign of happiness for a draw, even when we had 20 points more than Lens.

I am confident the team can get the title. The problem is not there for me, it is more the mentality that pisses me off. Why has Lyon been playing crappy soccer in this last month? That’s unacceptable. I love football more than titles, and the team hasn’t played well for a long spell.
As for comments Lyon can’t handle the pressure, I dismiss this argument. Lyon won their first title on a make it or lose it game. They also came back from nowhere to catch up Monaco. Lyon can handle pressure, don’t worry about that. It’s keeping the scoreline they can’t do. Those players are simply not mend to defend.

Stupid Marseille. They let Bordeaux to catch up them. They would risk they chanches for Europe just to see Lyon down. Marseille, forget that. You never gone be champpion, that also worth for Bordeaux. We must trust in our players. They will win both game, against Nancy and Auxerre, they will be better, they will be infornt of Bordeaux, they will be champions. Allez Allez Lyonnais And one more thing : Lyon will chursh Sedan, not becuase they will be in final, its because they morale will be sky high before Nancy.
