Lyon 3- 2 Nimes: So the 4-3-3…Yeah
By: Inara | July 12th, 2008Lyon had their first summer friendly this afternoon against Nimes in Albertville. Goals were scored by Juninho (10), Yannis Tafer (40), and Anthony Mounier (63). This was Claude Puel’s first match in charge, and for many of the players, their first match in an OL jersey. And speaking of jerseys, as you can see, Lyon busted out their new away kit.

Not as bad as I first feared.
First of all, Juninho was given the captain’s armband. It’s not really a surprise because he was the captain during the last two seasons, and he’s also the most senior and most experienced player on the squad. Still, I was concerned because Juninho and Puel got off on the wrong foot at first.
Going into the match, there was a lot of speculation about what players would be aligned for this game.
Still on vacation: Karim Benzema, Sidney Govou, Jeremy Toulalan, Kim Kallstrom, Jean II Makoun, Francois Clerc, Sebastien Squillaci, Fabio Grosso
Injured: Fred, Fabio Santos, Anthony Reveillere, Hugo Lloris
Transfered/Out of Contract: Hatem Ben Arfa, Frederic Roux, Patrick Muller, Gregory Coupet, Loic Remy, Marc Crosas
FYI, that’s nine of the usual starters missing. For any coach, it’s always a challenge to come up with a competitive team when such a huge chunk of the senior squad is missing, so to compensate, Puel used many of Lyon’s younger players, some of whom are in the reserves and some of whom play in even younger divisions. I seriously doubt Puel had any idea what sort of team he wanted until ten minutes before the game started.
For this game, Puel basically aligned two different teams in each half. In the first half, it was basically Lyon’s “B” team, and in the second, it was the “C” team (with an average age of 12). What surprised me was that he elected to use a 4-3-3. I was hoping expecting that he’d try something different - that’s the point of friendlies, right? Anyway, here’s how it looked:
First half:
Vercoutre
Gassama - Paillot - Cris - Fontaine
Bodmer - Juninho
Ederson
Keita - Tafer - Delgado
Second half:
Hartock
Gassama - Faure - Seguin - Valdivia
Beynié - Mehamha
Pjanic
Pied - Grenier - Mounier
Typically of these types of friendlies, Puel was more concerned with easing his players back into the season than anything, so it’s important not to take the result too seriously. It’s also difficult to form a solid opinion on performances since most players were on the pitch for 45 minutes. Plus you could definitely tell that some of the guys were taking it a little too easy (*points at B team*).
Still, I do have some comments. First of all, it’s so obvious that Remy Vercoutre hasn’t played in a while. The first goal he conceded was absolutely cringe worthy and something my fourteen year old sister could have prevented with ease. On the second, he was way off his line and looked clueless as a Nimes player chipped a ball over his head. His replacement in the second half, Joan Hartock, didn’t have anything to do, though the one time Nimes threatened, he was saved by the post (also, this was the first time I’ve ever seen Hartock play…he’s very loud for a keeper).
The backline was hard to evaluate. Cris looked okay while Sandy Paillot (who is so tall) showed signs of the experience he got last season at Grenoble. He also had a rocket of a shot that the Nimes keeper barely saved. The two fullbacks in the first half, Thomas Fontaine and Lamine Gassama, were really solid. Gassama in particular impressed (he was the only one who played the entire match) and has made a very strong case for making it into the senior team (it also helps that Lyon are really short of fullbacks at the moment). The CB pair in the second half, Nicolas Seguin and Sebastien Faure, looked alright, but they weren’t really tested.
Mathieu Bodmer and Ederson looked good in midfield, Bodmer especially. Ederson needs to get used to playing with his new teammates some more, but he looked promising. Juninho didn’t really do much, but the little he did do was the most crucial - he got Lyon back into the game. In the second half, the midfield was less active, with both Romain Beynie and Said Mehamha rather lukewarm (but then again, they were played slightly out of position). Miralem Pjanic took a while to get settled, but once he did, he was terrific, creating chances for both himself and his teammates. He was unlucky not to have scored.
Up front, Kader Keita did his usual Houdini routine. I was hoping that Puel would immediately get Keita back into his Lille-form, but I guess he’ll need more time. Cesar Delgado played well technically though he really needs to work on his fitness and physical strength. It’s obvious that he’s having trouble coping with the more physical aspect of the French game, but this is something that will improve over time. I thought Yannis Tafer (the top scorer in the Euro U17 Championship this spring) did really well considering he’s only 17. He might not be the “new Benzema,” but he’s a special player that will grow into his own as he gets older.
In the second half, I was a little surprised to see Clement Grenier used as a striker since he’s actually an attacking midfielder. But he showed a lot of complicity with Pjanic and looked good on the ball. At his side, Jeremy Pied was pretty much invisible, but Anthony Mounier was IMO the best player in the second half and possibly the best Lyonnais over all. He looked really good and should definitely be on the senior team for next season. Then again, this is what happened last season too - Mounier impressed in all the friendlies and subsequently vanished at the start of the season.
I’m trying to hunt down the entire match, but for those of you looking for highlights, you can download then here (courtesy of the fantastic Jejeinho).

I second the opinion on the away kit! Hmmm.
It was no small feat they could put up an OK team with all these missing people.Posted from

I have no idea how to take these kits. On one hand, I’m not a big fan, but on the other, I was expecting something truly hideous, so I’m happy that these kits are somewhat decent.
I like the blue kit, at least the color, but you guys are right in that it is rather plain.
Someone sent me a link of a kit website a few days ago. In it, people vote for what they think of new kits. I was so surprised to discover that the majority of voters rated the kits 4/5 or 5/5. The comments are also interesting, for the most part the reaction is positive, some like the blue a lot, some like the yellow.
I was not expecting that.
(Also, I just noticed the collar detail, which is pretty nice).

That kit as really AMAZING

I think you have to see them for real. This blue is really pretty weared.
And there’s kind of diagonal lines on the front, because of very little hole for temperature regulation.
I like it a lot since I’ve seen it for real.About the game, Mounier (as usual) impressed me. That’s been more than a year I tell (YELL ?) to everyone I want him in the first team. Not especially for big games like C1, but he really can be our left winger for some basics ligue 1 confrontations. With him, we don’t miss Ben Arfa anymore.
Really hope Puel will try !Posted from

As annoying as it is that none of the teams I support actually show their damn friendlies online, I so love that they show these matches. I sort of half-watched the first half before the kits blinded me and I had to turn it off, but Eder looks very careful to me, which I supposed is to be expected from a guy who, like you said, is trying to figure out how to play with the people around him.
And, yeah, Mounier was ferocious in the second half — could you tell whether that was a function of him being that good, and ready for a firs team spot, or if he’s maybe just a little ahead of everyone else in terms of fitness, etc, and it showed?

I think the kit looks OK, but it is pretty dull, my favourite away kit was the red one from a couple of seasons ago - the blue is kinda underwhelming. Seems a lot weaker than the gold of last year.
Good to hear about some of the fringe players and their performances. I’ve seen bits of Lacazette, Tafer and Grenier in the u-17 world cup, and all looked impressive. Do any of you think any of you expect to see any of the youth graduates get a look at the first team this season? Does anyone know if Gassama is left footed either? Could be a useful backup to Grosso in the season.

the gold kit was way better than this…and i didnt even like it that much. this kit puts me to sleep its so unimpressive. maybe with different color shorts it would look better but this way they look like some scottish league side. =x

Jo: I have my fingers crossed for Mounier. Puel will surely give him more chances than Perrin did. After all, he didn’t let Mounier leave on loan, so that’s a good thing, right?
Martha: Mounier has always looked good when he played. Most OL fans are unanimous in wanting to see him more often. But Perrin didn’t trust youth, plus Lyon were overflowing with wingers last season. But I’m hoping Puel will make the most of his talents. He’s definitely ready to be on the first team, though as Jo said, right now, he’s more of an L1 player.
Sam: I think the U17 kids are hoping to make the jump to the CFAs, though Tafer might get lucky and see a little bit of first team action. But for the others, they aren’t even in the reserves yet. So they have a ways to go. About Gassama, I think he’s right footed, though I believe is like Reveillere in that he can play on both sides. Puel said that if possible, instead of bringing in back up for Grosso from the outside, he’ll try to see if there is a suitable youngster at the club. So we’ll see.
lefutur: Now that I think about it, you’re so right about the Scottish thing. Maybe they’ll try different shorts though. With the gold kit and even the white kit, they had different shorts.

Oh gross. That Rangers kit is a cross between OL’s gold kit of last season and this season’s blue kit.
I like Umbro, but I wish they had unique templates for Lyon.

I don’t really agree.
Most of the new Umbro Kit (England, Sweden or that Rangers shirt…) are made with the same Template. I don’t think it’s the same for OL
We don’t have that drawings on both sides of the shirts. Our are one colour made, everywhere.
The collar do not seem to be the same, the rangers one have red and white striple “from shoulders to shoulders”. We just have our 2 colours on the “V” collar.
Our blue is really not the same as the rangers one.
And finally, we have that 2 white stripes on our shirt sleeves. From what I saw it’s special too.I think you can say (for example), that RC Lens Shirt is a copy/paste of the croatian jersey. Only the colours change.
But OL shirt really seem to be unique. And I like it.Posted from

Gassama is right footed, and is primarily a right back. I am pretty sure he rarely plays at left back, its why they had Thomas Fontaine playing there, who is a Reunion immigrant interestingly. I was pleased to see all the youngsters playing, and with the exception of Pied, it sounds like they all did very well. To bad we did not see Valdivia in his true position, while I wish Reale and maybe Salamand were given the call up, but I expect them to be in the first team along wtih N-Diaye and Lacazette in a year or two.

whatever. it’s not the black europe kit that we all love so much and has defined lyon in the CL.
but as long as the team plays to their full potential and they have a spectacular season, i don’t care what color they accomplish those goals in.

Last week, Le Progres had an interview of Bernard Lacombe, where they asked him about the new kits and why Lyon changed their Europe kit so drastically. According to him, while OL have a lot of good memories in that kit, they’ve also had some bad ones (PSV, Roma, United), so the club thought that maybe a change might be helpful.

I like them. So what if they sort of look like Barca’s, they are still not as flashy. Barca’s was almost a florescent turquoise, which kind of made me gag. I like the away kit. It’s simple, clean, and modest. Have any of you seen Marseilles away? As for the european one, I like to relate them to the lion that’s been on our jerseys for a while.
