The Lillois Save the Day!
By: Inara | October 31st, 2007First of all, apologies to anyone who decided to watch the first 75 minutes of Lyon’s Coupe de la Ligue match against Caen. If you’re like me, you might have been wondering which team was newly promoted and which team had won their sixth title. If logic was anything to go by, you’d assume Lyon dominated top flight wannabes Caen, but actually it was the other way around.
I can’t even begin to describe my horror at watching Lyon get footballing lessons from a team whose market value is less than the cost of Fred alone.

Don’t let the relaxed nature of this photo deceive you. Lyon were forced to work really hard.
About the game itself, two of Lyon’s three goals were scored by ex-Lille duo Kader Keita and Mathieu Bodmer. It was poignant for Bodmer because he started his career at Caen, and it was especially poignant for Keita, because he’s been having trouble establishing himself at Lyon. The third goal was scored by Karim Benzema. Two assists were provided by Hatem Ben Arfa. Raise your hand if you’re surprised.
The other interesting thing of note is that Fred was given his first start since last May. His performance wasn’t the greatest, but it’s not that he looked bad out there, just winded and out of shape. It’s clear that he still has some work to do before he’s back in top form. Oh, and you know who else looked good? Perennial bench boys Fabio Santos and Nadir Belhadj. If my name was either Jeremy Toulalan or Fabio Grosso, I’d be feeling very nervous about my position on the starting X1.
It was very alarming to watch Lyon’s defense (makeshift as it is) cut wide open every ten seconds by the quick movement of Caen’s attackers. The fact that Perrin had to put Benzema and Juninho onto the pitch to wake the team up was another cause for concern, as Lyon can’t start depending on individual players. What was beautiful about the Lyon of the past few years was that they weren’t dependent on certain players - they played as a unit. I’d hate to see that vanish this year.
I’ll keep this match review short because there really isn’t much to say except that Lyon have to stop with the suckitude when it comes to cup competitions - even the boring ones. Lyon are three games away from winning their first domestic cup since 2001, so let’s pray that Juninho & Co. don’t mess it up like they do every other year.
Just to random things to point out. First, if you’re wondering why the shirt sponsors are different, it’s because the LFP imposes their own sponsors on the Coupe de la Ligue, and all teams have to sport it. For the Coupe de France, the FFF forces their own sponsors onto the teams. Also, I thought it was quite festive that Caen busted out with the Halloween kits (which look eerily like Lorient’s).
Secondly, Benzema has now scored in every competition he’s played in so far. His tally is now at 15 goals!
I’d love to post extended match highlights, but this being a rather ignored competition in what is already an ignored footballing league, I can offer only clips of the goals. Oh, and pictures of course.
The Goals:
Caen 0 - Lyon 1; Keita 15
Caen 1 - Lyon 1; Grandin 30
Caen 1 - Lyon 2; Bodmer 75
Caen 1 - Lyon 3; Benzema 89

i really really really happy for bodmer and keita, especially keita. these are guys with loads of talent that deserve to be at lyon but who havent gotten a lot of playing time and who maybe havent been able to get into a rhythm this season. i hope that keita can start to relax and play the kind of football that came naturally to him at lille.

Inara, I (and many people) think that Lyon has been dependant on Juninho for quite a bit. Let’s say the last 3-4 years. But I see your point about playing as a unit.
Still, all the best teams in Europe rely on 1 or 2 individuals to make the game. Gerrard in Liverpool, Kaka in Milan, Fabregas in Arsenal, Messi in Barca, Lampard in Chelsea,… etc. So I don’t see it as a problem as such.
We all know the 433 is worth when Juni is playing, and I just think we ought to play differently when he is not on the pitch as there is no equivalent to him in the team. Bodmer being the closest but he is in defense for the moment.
But Perrin has been told off by Aulas and he is now wary of changing formation…Posted from

I agree with the Grosso thing, sometimes when I watch him it’s like he’s not too bothered where as Belhadj plays with alot of urgency and much more enthusiasim. Perrin really needs to concentrate on his defence.

On a tottally different note, Caen’s uniforms are dope.

Well lets hope this is the confidence boost Keita needs, we all know he’s capable of great things but just hasn’t hit his stride at Lyon (until last night?)
There was a post match interview on France 3 with Caen president and the interviewer said how he had been amused to watch the president’s (hitherto optimistic)face just drop when Benzema and then Juni came on. He had the grace to smile and say something like ‘well what would you feel given Benzema’s form at the moment’.
Magnusson, I had the same thought about the Caen shirts - the players looked like they had just stepped out of a Speedy workshop.Posted from

I’ll respond to comments later, but I just wanted to say that pride of Lyon posted the 3000th comment to this blog.
Thanks to all the wonderful commentators for making the OL Offside such a great place!

wooh I had no idea it was the 3000th comment. I now wish I had said something more catchy and optimistic!

lefutur: The scary thing is that in a press conference today, Perrin was saying how Bodmer is turning out to be a great CB (I don’t know what drugs he’s on) and that he might not be ready yet to be a full time midfielder. WTF right?
pride of Lyon: While I agree to a certain extent that all teams are dependent on a certain player, the fact that Lyon seem to have no confidence when Benzema and Juninho weren’t there, and yet did when they got on the pitch, is what worries me. I don’t expect Lyon to play well without their best players, but I do expect them to at least pretend like they’re the champions.
Ush: I would like to see Belhadj as the starter over Grosso for a while. He might be the next Fabio Santos! In fact, as glad as I am to have Grosso here, I wouldn’t mind trading him for a more defensively minded LB, even if its Sylvain Armand at PSG.Storm: I have so much faith in Keita, and unlike a lot of others, I don’t think Lyon made a mistake in paying so much money for him (because that’s the current market, he’ll be worth that much when he starts playing like he should, and also I’m glad that Lille got some money).
If I were Caen, I would probably feel a bit robbed right now. Caen actually put out more of their B team than Lyon did. And yet Caen still pwned Lyon for 75 minutes.

I thought the game was exciting. It kept me riveted, and the entire game I wasn’t sure if Lyon would come through (until Benzema scored). The only other time I’ve felt that uncertain about Lyon not winning was at Barcelona. Though Lyon lost to Rangers, Lorient, and Toulouse, Lyon were still the better team and I expected them to win. But I thought Caen had a very good chance yesterday.

Magnusson: I thought Caen’s colors were red and blue (copying Barca and all that), so when I saw the halloween themed orange and black kits, I did a double take and though we were seeing Lorient for a second.
Marielle: I agree, I was really nervous. Caen were so damn fast! The other teams in L1 should watch their match tapes. Now that would provide the spectacle.Posted from
