It Will Be Manchester United

By: Inara | December 21st, 2007

Full draw:

Celtic vs. Barcelona
Lyon vs. Manchester United
Schalke vs. Porto
Liverpool vs. Inter Milan
Roma vs. Real Madrid
Arsenal vs. Milan
Olympiacos vs. Chelsea
Fenerbahce vs. Sevilla

Well, this draw will make 16% of you happy. While this isn’t the hardest draw we could have asked for, it comes close. The only thing for certain is if Lyon want to progress, they will need to buy a very good CB in the next few weeks and ensure that Gregory Coupet returns to fitness as quickly as possible. Though at least one of Lyon’s games will be broadcast on ESPN!

And with that, I’m out for the day. I’ll be going home for the next two weeks, so my posting on this site will be sporadic at best. Stop by and express your thoughts on this draw, and as always, keep me updated with your comments and the latest news.

Have a happy holiday!

Stop with that “Best defense in the world” crap. That’s propaganda.
Granted, Vida’s good but ythat’s just EPL propaganda.

We’ll see? Lyon are a better team than Bolton, Everton and Manchester City and all have scored on United this season.

We will score against them, I’d certainly fancy Benzema to, but the only question is how many will we concede?

It’s okay, Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t show up for the real games. A nice challenge from Toulalan and he’ll be quiet the whole game. :)

Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown versus the likes of Benzema, Ben Arfa, Govou and Juninho. I’m fairly optimistic yep.

Well, when you speak about Manchester’s defense, don’t forget about my countryman Nemanja Vidić, we in Serbia might rate him higher than we should, but he is undoubtedly a world class player and a pillar of Manchester’s defense (he was nominated for the UEFA best defender award). Let’s just hope that both he and Rio Ferdinand don’t get top of their form until the Lyon games…

    Very good point, Ush.

And acidrain, about Grosso? Well, he did a pretty decent job covering Messi during the return game at the Gerland.

Vidic is a very good defender but I honestly think Lyon are up with the best in Europe attacking wise. Not only the starters but having players like Kallstrom, Bodmer and Keita to call on is really nice depth. Kallstrom always seems to make good contributions and as far as I remember, Bodmer was a big part of United finding it tough against Lille last year.

Small consolation but Manu Utd lost 2:1 to eight placed West Ham today. If Arsenal win today they will displace them for the number one spot.

and they conceded both from set pieces - we need Fred back! that said, this is the one draw i didn’t want. there’s something cynical about this manchester united team. against arsenal they just seemed to wait for arsenal to leave space and in a matter of seconds they had 6 or 7 players moving around rooney; the fastest team in europe for sure. but i think we can beat them. one of manchester’s great faults has always been, to me anyway, a lack of defensive cover in midfield…sometimes, like in milan last season they just get too excited and leave gaps. hopefully a good result at home, even a 0-0 would be nice and then let’s see them open up and leave space at home. the one thing we can’t do is open up for a an open game like roma did last year. let’s play them at their own game…

    maybe?

sorry to say that but Lyon is already screwed.. they can only dominate in the weakest of the biggest Euro Leagues. Aulas n’est qu’un pretencieux.
Lyon is a small football club without any history and reaching successive quarter finals didn’t make them any bigger.
Lyon will be playing defensively in Gerland no doubts. They’ll be playing with fear and let’s hope Man utd don’t thrash them in Gerland itself or else I’ll have to watch other teams in 2 weeks time.

゙Sir゙ Thames. Arrogance is a dangerous thing in Soccer. Lyon is sometimes and when they are they often lose.
I hope ManU players are humble, because otherwise…

Man u have nothing to show for except the ronaldo-dependance .I feel sorry for this team which have some good players but not enough to take us out of the CL.Ronaldo will get the same punishment as messi when he came to lyon with barca(you’ll see).To me, man u are only a one man team(ronaldo alias crying baby),which will be absolutely useless with a dog like toulalan on his back(gattuso inside)You all tend to underestimate lyon’s firing power kallstrom, juninho(best free kick taker in the world) benzema, ben arfa, govou, keita
As for man u and you are the definetly the favorite But we are so not afraid .Guys like nani anderson carrick ferdinand and the most overrated player in the world(rooney inside)wont be enough to stop us to go through the next stage
ps you only have two players that most of us fear scholes and tevez

Encouraging article, will see. The problem for lyon is Dm and defence and possibly the short number of strikers. Definately though lyons defence cannot handle tevez, rooney and the great ronaldo IMO.

we are short of strikers LoL(tottenham were willing to spend £10M for Fred,Man U £££££££££ for benzeman,ARsenal £25 for ben arfa)I wont be talking about keita and govou. We definately have the players to score goals my dear freind.
we are the outsider, the pressure is on your side.(the big rich english champion ought to beat the poor french champion)we also have the players capable of handling rooney tevez and ronaldo.THE TEAM WHO WILL WIN THE MIIDDFIELD BATTLE WILL HAVE THE BEST CHANCE TO GO THROUGH THE NEXT STAGE (juninho kallstrom toulalan VS SCHOLES,carrick, anderson my choice is made)
good luck to both side!!and remember Man u are the big favorite
