Lyon vs. Dinamo Zagreb – Fireworks, anyone?

Champions League Group Stages – Matchday 2 – Sep 27, 2011.

My good performances are only coming out because the team is a well oiled machine right now and they are creating far more chances for me than I used to get, and that’s because there is more quality in our play. – BafĂ©timbi Fredius Gomis.

While the media of the world, in all their articles and reviews of popular clubs may focus on Bayerns or Real Madrids or Ajaxs or Villarreals of football, the match closer home concerns us much, and for so many reasons.

Lyon vs Dinamo

The One Hundredth

It is a milestone attained by only the very best clubs in the world. Tuesday’s match against Dinamo Zagreb shall be the 100th Champions League match for Lyon. Brings back memories, doesn’t it?

The importance of getting things right here can hardly be overstated. The club goes into a Real Madrid double-header the next two times the Champions League anthem rings around the stadium. Not to mention a spate of challenging spike-strips all along October, as Lyon plays table leaders PSG, current Ligue 1 champions Lille, and the Derby du RhĂ´ne against the most successful club in French football history – Saint Etienne.

Dinamo Zagreb are not exactly regulars at the Champions League stage. That says little, however, of their professional abilities on the pitch and more about the UEFA Coefficients system, being the sole flag bearers for Croatia in Europe. This past fortnight, they managed to keep the high and mighty Real Madrid in check. Well, a 1-0 loss at home means exactly that.

It is a club that has been dominating the Croatian league Prva HNL for a better part of the decade gone by. The current season 2011-12, that they lead as of date, (8 wins and 1 draw in 9 games) shall be their 7th consecutive title if they were to achieve it. Brings back memories, doesn’t it?

A Few Good Men.

Though Alexandre Lacazette didn’t shine in place of rested Jimmy Briand against Bordeaux, not much would remove pre-season jitters than a manager who’s got your back. Perform, and you shall find your place in the team seems to be the message. Gomis is in his element, Bastos is swinging in those crosses like Ronaldinho of old, getting involved in 6 of the last 9 Ligue 1 goals for Lyon. And despite the disappointing defeat against Caen, little seems to have deterred this unit that seems to be out on a mission this season. After all, a close-knit team that has little changed could be expected to have better co-ordination over the years.

It has been exactly one month since Lisandro fell to injury, and boy have Les Gones wiped out the feeling of dread!

Bakary Koné has gelled into the team with ease, and causes a flutter in the opponent penalty box everytime he goes for the bicycle kick in offence! That would be a great sight of possibly a great defender to be, at the risk of jumping ahead of time.

The match would be of some importance to Dejan Lovren, as he goes against his former club. Matches against Clubs of old have rarely been easy for many, and Lovren for one would like to prove a point. Though if not with a headed goal, then hopefully not with either of those brightly coloured cards.

Czech Referee Pavel Kralovec shall orchestrate his first Champions League match ever. I’m guessing he would like no nonsense to go on under his watch.

For Dinamo Zagreb, the saving grace has been Goalkeeper Ivan Keleva. Making important saves had become a habit at the match against Real Madrid, for this keeper. Much reliance can be expected on the back four for Dinamo Zagreb, to defend as well as to push forwards from the back.

Bad Gones vs Bad Blue Boys

Support more than you can stomach? You bet!

Dinamo Zagreb have their fair share of fierce supporters, so I expect the stadium to be noisy!

Their Bad Gones equivalent of faithful are, well.. The Bad Blue Boys. Asking followers-that-often-throng-to-Croatian-football-stadiums of their reputation may result in an uncomfortable shifty look. They are known to turn nasty, so one should keep an ear out for the decibel levels in the stadium!

This, however, is one area that makes me proud as an OL supporter. Rarely has Stade Gerland been anything but encouraging of the team. When the odds are against them, the singing drowns the tensions.

Who’s in the Line-ups and who’s out fixing his microwave?

Lisandro, Cris, Gourcuff, while having started team training, shall not feature in this match. Ederson and Yannis Tafer are out for longer periods of time.

Kim Källström should make the first team again, and hopefully spend the evening in the industrious manner in which he always does.

Probable Teams:

Lyon: Lloris – RĂ©veillère, B. KonĂ©, Lovren, Cissokho – Gonalons, Källström – Briand, Grenier, Bastos – Gomis.

Dinamo Zagreb: Kelava – Leko, Vida, Tonel, Simunic – Badelj, Calello – Kovacic, Sammir, Ibanez – Beqiraj

Allez Les Gones!!

Brilliant. First we learn that neither Licha nor Gourcuff will be fit to be included in the group for PSG. But we say : no problem, the current team is doing OK.
Now we learn that Grenier won't be fit either, and we say : crap, who the hell can replace him with such effectiveness?

  • john

Garde will have to go back to a 4-4-2, since putting Bastos at the #10 didn't work to well last time. I wonder if they should but Briand there and move him in a little closer behind Gomis as an SS/deep-lying striker? Basically a 4-4-2/4-2-3-1 hybrid.

  • Aleksander

I dont think putting Briand there would work very well, he is not especially good on the ball

  • Nikhil Apte

Bastos with a contract extension for two more years, wants to stay till he's 33, or finish his career at Lyon! (whichever comes first :P)

  • john

If someone offers 15-18mill he'll be served-up on a silver platter.
In these instances- when a player signs an extension- is it always the case that he wants to stay, or that he may also want to reward his current club with a future transfer fee, instead of just walking out on them on a Bosman?

  • Nikhil Apte

Oh yes, that is what I do in FIFA Manager mode too, anyway. :P But let us give this chap the benefit of doubt for now. :)

  • john

It wasn't sarcasm, I was asking a genuine question.

  • Nikhil Apte

    Ah, okay.

Thing is, these transfer decisions can change on hourly basis really. So as of now, he seems to want to stay. But the moment someone big approaches him, I'm sure he'll get visions of Ronaldinho and Drogba and even Malouda and the like who became really big outside Ligue 1.
Because right now his reason is "When a club like OL offers you an extension, it makes you think." Later it may be "When a club like XYZ offers you a contract, and you're aging, it makes you think harder".

Apart from language considerations when moving to other countries and clubs, there will be family relocation, general benefit programme by the new clubs, after-tax salaries / bonuses and general supporter hostility levels to consider before these things materialize. So I'd say he's likely to be incorporated into the "backbone" of the club if he wants it, but Lyon will be ready to sell if he's willing to go, I guess.

Though, it is possible that Bastos Tshirt earnings may one day make it worth not looking at the 20 million etc offers.
    Transfers = big grey area!

im so happy to hear this remember how long it took us to find a replacement when Malouda departed for chelsea

  • Boz

May I say this was an excellent performance from the whole team. Sure, we had a few moments when we were...sleeping, shall we say, but overall excellent. Outplayed them for much of the match, outclassed and OUT OF THE UNIVERSE!!!

I'm getting carried away...leave me for a moment to bask in OL glory! Damn, this feels good....

However, a moment or two of seriousness. Worst case scenario, we could end up 3rd in the group if (and I say IF) we obtain nothing in the next 2 games and Ajax beat Zagreb. That would NOT be a disaster as we have Ajax and Zagreb after. It's quite possible though the group could be tight if (emphasis added) Zagreb obtain a couple of points against Ajax and do us a big favour.

So, conclusion? We need a point or two from the Madrid games. If we can get this, or may be a victory then we have a great chance of going through. The belief is there....

Just one thing Remi: For me, Lacazette is better on the wing. I think alone up front he struggled a bit, and I think Briand needs a shot of whatever it is your handing to the rest of them!

    Allez Remi, Allez Lyonnais!

  • muadz matmu

I hope Lyon can do much better with Lisandro around :D

  • Megame

2-0 final score. A well organised and composed OL simply extinguished a strangely uninspired Zagreb team in the first half, and then controlled the game in a quiet second half.

  • Nikhil Apte

Belfodil should be given a chance with so many chances being created.

  • sdzsdz

grenier should've netted that last shot. playing incredible football. allez lyonnais!

  • This is a match between my favourite international club - Lyon and my hometown club - Dinamo :)I already bought ticket for a match in Zagreb, and I am so excited about it even though it may be cold here on 7th December...Lyon are supposed to win, but Dinamo should be respected! They can play well! This squad is together for quite some time and have built good chemistry on the pitch!Dinamo played well against Real, and it could have easily finished in a draw...For me, today is a win-win situation :D I hope, Dinamo will finish 3rd in group behind Lyon and Real.

  • john

I dreamt that Lovren broke a Dinamo player's leg. I'm expecting a red card from some stupid play; a yellow at the very least.
