The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly About Bayern vs. Lyon
By: Inara | September 30th, 2008Match pictures and highlights at the bottom of the post.
THE GOOD:

Definitely the man of the match…on both sides.
Hugo Lloris.
He’s definitely shaken off the jitters that afflicted him in the Fiorentina match. Confident and not afraid to take risks, he was the main reason that Lyon walked away with any points at all. In particular, he made two really good saves – the first from a powerful shot by Phillip Lahm and the second from a Luca Toni torpedo. Beyond that, he was the only calm person in the Lyon defense. He’s really good in the air and isn’t afraid of getting body checked by six foot tall Germans. Fortunately for him, Raymond Domenech was in the audience, so who knows, maybe we’ll see him in blue one of these days.
Jeremy Toulalan is back to being Mr. Fantastic.
When I first watched the game, I didn’t think he was doing that well, but having skimmed through the match again, I guess I was so focused on the other players that I didn’t notice what a good job he was doing in midfield. For the most part, he kept Franck Ribery on a tight muzzle and gave Miroslav Klose a really hard time. Bayern’s midfield couldn’t really get it together with the disruptions he and Jean II Makoun were causing, which forced Bayern to attack through their wings.

The players were absurdly happy with their one point.
Lyon got a point from arguably their toughest away fixture.
This point still keeps the club in the hunt, especially with Fiorentina only managing a home draw with Steaua. Lyon’s next confrontation with Bayern will be at the Gerland, and that game will be one that Lyon can win. If anything, it’s Bayern who are mourning their two dropped points. Fortunately for Lyon, their next two games is a double header with Steaua. Those won’t be easy games by any means, but they should be easier than Bayern and Fiorentina.
THE BAD:
Fred makes Sidney Govou seem as consistent as taxes.
A bad match here, a good match there…Should Lyon be starting such an unreliable player in arguably their toughest match so far? Sure, Fred had a good game against Nancy. But he was crap before then, and he was crap today. While I appreciate that Puel has faith in Fred, sometimes it’s better to go with a more safer alternative. How much better would it have been if Ederson had started? Because in that case, Karim Benzema could have started up front, and that would have made him far more dangerous. At any rate, that surely would have been better than what actually happened: which was nothing. Did Fred accomplish anything besides that one missed chance?

The only person looking at the ball is Luca Toni. Hmm.
Lyon lose their concentration far too easily.
Maybe it’s because so players were out of position (John Mensah, Karim Benzema, Ederson, Mathieu Bodmer), but it seems to me that Lyon can’t stay focused for an entire match. There were definite moments in the game where the players would start an attack but get confused thirty seconds later, as if they were struck with amnesia. Lyon would have scored four or five goals if the players hadn’t lost their focus and flubbed their chances in the last ten meters of the pitch. It also didn’t help that Puel had the players play for a draw, which is something they haven’t done all season. Even when they were two goals down against Nice and Fiorentina, Lyon went for the win. So perhaps today’s newest directive didn’t settle so well with the players.
Cris is still struggling to find form.
While he was better than against Nice, Cris still made more mistakes than usual and allowed too many Bayern players to pass him by. He should have done a better job on keeping tabs on Ze Roberto as well. I don’t know if he’s more hesitant to make tackles or if his knee is slowing him down, but it’s a sad day when Mathieu Bodmer is a better defender. And speaking of Bodmer, he had a fairly good match. If only he could improve his instincts as a defender (he still thinks like a midfielder), he’d be really good.

The police officer has been replaced by a kindergarten teacher.
Lyon relied on too many set pieces.
At one point, Juninho kept collecting fouls in order to get good free kicks. While he wasn’t diving, you could tell he wasn’t getting out of the way either. While I don’t mind when players pick up smart fouls, the fact that Juninho felt it was Lyon’s only chance was troubling (though it turned out to be true, since Lyon’s only goal was the result of his free kick). Normally, Lyon can count themselves blessed to have a freekick master like Juni on their team – any other club manager would sell his right eye to have a player like that on his roster. But while it’s good that Lyon take advantage of Juninho’s talent, relying on it as their sole source of salvation is dangerous.
THE UGLY:
Juninho’s hair.
WTF is going on with his hair? I’m convinced that it’s a bird nest. How is he supposed to see anything if his hair is all over his face. And what’s the point of wearing a headband if it’s not actually keep his hair back? Geez, can someone tell him to get a haircut? He wouldn’t even need to pay for it since Lyon own their own hair salons.

That’s not hair, that’s a nest!

Another Juninho picture, just because.
Karim Benzema was once again put on the left.
Someone explain this to me. If your team possesses one of the most amazing strikers, not just of his generation but in the entire tournament, a man who is at his most dangerous when he plays up front when he can focus on striking and not on ball winning – why in the world would you play him anywhere else?!?!?!?!? It’s not as if Lyon were having a massive injury crisis up front, in fact, they are overflowing with attacking talent. I know, I know, Karim Benzema can play well in the LW position. But he’s like 50% efficient, and when you need goals, you have to put him where he plays best as opposed to supporting the no good Fred. For nearly the duration of the entire game, Benzema was forced to drop deep to retrieve balls, to spend his time defending, and was often isolated from the rest of Lyon’s nonexistent attack.
WHY CLAUDE, WHY?????
John Mensah is not a good replacement left back.
Just ugh. I thought it couldn’t get any worse than having Kim Kallstrom back there, but John Mensah proved equally adept at being useless. He barely contributed to the attack, and his defending was nonexistent. Time and time again, Massimo Oddo easily bypassed him and sent in tons of crosses to his teammates. Mensah spent most of his time fouling the Germans and kicking the ball out of play. Thank GOD Fabio Grosso is due to return for the next Champions League game. I’m tired of seeing Lyon’s left flank raped on a biweekly basis.

Let’s compromise and say Cris was more reassuring than probably ever this year.. but still far from his former self.
Inara, I think you could add Juninho’s performance on the good side: he kept motivating his troops (I don’t know what he shouted at Fred in the first half but that didn’t look too kind and tender), kept the ball really well, created several chances (why the hell didn’t anyone cut the trajectory of his first free kick?) and was decisive in the end. Not to mention his good positioning when defending, especially on several corner kicks. I have to admit I was underestimating his importance before the game, I was wrong.
Other (really) bad looking but finally good performance was our collective defending: threatened time and time again in the second half, but with only one goal conceded (Jeremy, why didn’t you watch Ze Roberto running next to you towards the goal) in front of a hell of an offense… scary but, in the end, doing the job. (And yes, I think KK probably would have been as bad a defender as Mensah, but with less fouls committed, more nerves and more attacking play to support Benzema…

How bad was Govou’s injury? He was in big pain, and at that moment I was really sad. Fred had good, let’s say 20-25 minutes of good game. Benz was also good.

Bayern Probably should have won. We were setup badly and as stated, we can’t play defensive. We lacked genuine pace on the wings after Govou came off. Benz had an excellent first half, looked like one of the only OL players really trying! Fred has talent but looked so lazy alot of the time when closing down centre halfs, Lucio was able to stroll the ball to his midfielders.
Lloris was outstanding, really impressed with him. Entire defence looked poor particularly Cris, constantly gave away fouls in dangerous areas. Mensah looked slow, awkward and uncomfortable. Bayern goal came from his side. Seems to no partnership at all with Cris and Bodmer.

I think you should add Benzema to the bad side. After watching this game in my apt, I think I recounted about 3 brilliant chances that he completely missed. Freekick that he didn’t get his foot on, another cross that he barely missed and the on one one with the keeper that he somehow botched. Me and the TF1 guys were pretty much d’accord about that last chance. But still a good result for a Lyon team that was pretty much outmatched for most of the 2nd half and didn’t have a chance on paper.

The GOOD
” Toulakoun ”did a beautiful job keeping the midfield of bayern at bay.
The BAD
Franck Ribery’s prediction
So much for Lyon not coming away with a point in this game, am-i-rite lol.
The Ugly
Ze Roberto jumping on his coach like that……enough said

Did not see the match, but am nevertheless very glad to hear that you’re starting to turn on Juninho’s awful caveman situation. When will it end?!

Bodmer needs to work on his clearences. And Cher Claude: Please don’t ever ever ever ever ever, let me see Benzema on the left again!!!!!!! And can we try Makoun at left back? I think in the future, Lyon needs to start recruiting players who can seriously play both the center back and side back postions. We need to be at least two deep at every position! The one position we aren’t “two-deep” in, is costing us dearly. This defensive “injury curse,” is killing us. Last year and now this year. I hope Lyon get an LB during the winter transfer window, although that will be too late for the CL.

This is the season of juninho . He is the best player at OL right now by far. Thing is he is’nt playing all that great in open play, but i think hes gotten even better at free kicks. I could see that juni was very angry and hungry to win and once he figured out his team could’nt make any chances he wanted free kicks because that keeper looked suspect. I hope benz never plays on the wing again. Same with mensah at LB.

Guys, can we get serious and forget about Juninho’s hairstyle for a minute? Can’t you see that, as a loyal friend, he got his hair ribbon/rubber band from Coupet who wore it last season, without you guys commenting on it?
I’d rather focus on the last but two picture posted by Inara where you can see such a determination and challenge in his karate-kid style look…
The old fox can still lead by example, demonstrate grit and teach a few tricks to the young crowd (a heads up on how to get a free kick, anyone?)… And boy, do we need that in circumstances like yesterday…Posted from

That’s now confirmed following an MRI: Govou is out for 4 to 8 weeks (he will miss at least 4 Ligue 1 games, plus next CL one, plus probably the Metz game for the Coupe de la Ligue)
Given Ederson’s performance on the right side, looks like Keita might get more playing time, and sooner, than anticipated…Posted from

Wingers “small” (if 4~8 weeks is small) injuries are almost a blessing… When you look at the depth of the squad (Keita, Mounier, Delgado!) I wanty to see them play. I really would like to see more of Delgado, we didn’t give him a chance. Maybe he will turn up to be like “Fabio Santos”, the guy we never wanted to play until we were forced to, but then turns out to be worth it!
Talking about Fabio Santos, I am looking forward to see him come back… I’m sure he can be a decent backup for Either Makoun or Toulalan. And he also likes to take the play forward, he can be good as a second half replacement if we are losing the game and need to score but don’t want to uncover too much the back at the same time…

I also would like to see Fabio Santos… And with Puel I think he will have more chances than with Houllier or Perrin.
His chance might actually come soon, as our official collector of yellow cards, la Toule, should be suspended shortly (not sure if it will be for Rennes or Lille)for his highly successful collection.Posted from

did anyone watch Coupet’s horrible game against Barcelona. Made me sad really. but then i was also sorta relieved that he decided to put up that performance for Athletico and not us.
Hopefully Coupet can turn it around.

I saw the score and was hoping that Coupet was not playing. Didn’t see the match and don’t know how much of it was his fault. But it sounds like a nightmare.

Well, look at these ratings:

It looks like Coupet wasn’t so bad at all, but just look at these 1’s and a 0! It really makes you wonder what the hell was Atletico doing in that game!

OK, Coupet wasn’t so bad after all.. But he wasn’t so good either, if you watch the goals:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lsecwgMzNI
There are clear signs of being unsettled and losing his sound judgement of the situation that made him shine in Lyon. It’s probably understandable given this collective sinking and his personal challenge by Leo Franco; I just hope he doesn’t suffer from that with the coach and the public.
