Tommy Smyth Needs to Shut His Big Fat Mouth
By: Inara | November 28th, 2007
GRRR. I hate Tommy Smyth. He’s one of the few soccer analysts for ESPN, the nation’s largest sports broadcaster – and horrifyingly, people actually listen to what he says. In fact, he’s the main reason why most Americans are illiterate about soccer. He seems to really hate French football and puts Lyon down at every opportunity. In fact, he wrote off Lyon before the Champions League even started. He also has a hard on for John O’Shea, but that’s a story for another day.
So last Friday, on ESPNsoccernet’s weekly Press Pass, Derek Rae (the host) and his two fellow analysts, Smyth and Janusz Michallik, were discussing dire situations regarding Champions League qualification. If you want to watch it, click here, then look for the video player on the right hand side. Scroll down for the clip “Time Running Out For Lyon.”
Here is a transcript:
Rae: “It’s a very big week in UEFA Champions League action coming up, and I’m joined here in the ESPN Soccernet Presspass studio by the regulars of course, Tommy Smyth and Janusz Michallik. Let’s start with Tuesday night action, of course it will be Wednesday morning for some of you. And Olympique Lyonnais against Barcelona. Now Barca, Tommy, have acquitted themselves pretty well in this section by and large. Olympique Lyonnais got off to a slow start. But they’re making up ground.”
Smyth: Yeah, they [Lyon] certainly are, but I’m not sure that they’re going to make up anymore ground. I think the ground has gone. I think the ground is gonna be taken out from underneath them with Barcelona. Barcelona…there’s a few problems in the camp, there’s all kinds of black sheep and who knows what’s going on. But I still think they’re good enough to win.
Michallik: And you on Barceona’s side…how refreshing that is. But I tell you what, Olympique Lyon did have a slow start, but I’ve think they’ve played well recently, not just in Ligue 1 but in the Champions League. And I think Barcelona doesn’t need as much out of this game. What a difference a year makes, when they had to wait until the last game against Werder Bremen to qualify. But I do think it’s gonna be a draw, with Barcelona clearly good enough for a draw to go through.
Rae: “Yes, it wouldn’t be the worst result in the world for Barcelona.”
I would like to think that Smyth would stfu since the ground is still beneath Lyon, and even better, Lyon are threatening to take the ground from underneath his beloved Rangers. But that’s wishful thinking, isn’t it?

Lyon still have to win to go through… Lyon draw and Rangers go through.
He made a pretty daring predicton IMO, but he could just win it.
I put Rangers down to get only one or two points, and Stuttgart to go to the UEFA Cup… How wrong I was.

Why would you care. This guy said Rosenborg would beat Chelsea. They won 4-0. That’s how credible he is. Just because he’s a foreign journalist in a country that doesn’t care about football and who caters to amaateurs far away from the action make him able to say all kindsa bullcrap and get away with it.
If it was Italy or france (not Spain since they live for affirmations like those) he would ahve lost his job a long time ago.Posted from

Tommy Smyth is my least favourite commentator ever, and I support Barca. He just doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and I find it insulting to be told the opposite of what is going on right in front of my eyes.

I would like to ignore him, but basically, for me to watch the Champions League on television and not on the internet, I have to listen to him spouting crap week in and week out. He can think whatever he wants about Lyon, but I’m so sick and tired of him trashing talking French football when he’s probably never watched an entire L1 game in his life. He probably thinks the SPL should be numbered among the big five leagues instead.

Yes, I watched the video, and there is now a horrible smeel around me… to much bullshit coming out of his big mouth!

The thing I hate is that Scots and SPL fans get mixed in with Smyth just because we share the same allegiances. I think he’s a dope.

That’s how it is with the L1 and Michel Platini. Except Smyth is twice as annoying. Honestly, I think Smyth’s retardedness has taken away from some of the respect that Scottish football should get from his listeners because as soon as he’s done saying something stupid, he praises English and Scottish football like over the top, so listeners start relating the two.

Tommy Smyth is a fucking idiot, I agree. I was watching the Real-Bremen game today and switching to Chelsea-Rosenborg occasionally, but stopped because I kept hearing his voice.

I’m looking forward to the day when there are alternate audio feeds for each match, like on a DVD, because a lot of times, I’d rather just listen to the match and the crowd, rather than hear anything that any of the announcers have to say. During Stuttgart-Rangers the other day, the commentary went out for the first ten minutes of the match, and it was awesome. Like being there.

Ian: in some places of the world that day is already here. At least the German pay-tv station Premiere offers CL with German/English commentary + a separate stadium feed and Bundesliga with German commentary and a separate stadium feed as well.

I feel so uncivilized living in the US. What with Tommy Smyth as the soccer messiah, crap tv options, and a monkey for president, it’s no wonder UEFA feels sorry for us and gives us a cheaper price on their subscriptions.

Inara: Cheer Up. It’s not as bad as you think, I think. Here’s a quote from Pitch Invasion’s Thomas Dunmore:
“There was a time when soccer fans in the United States, I am told, were only able to obtain fleeting glimpses of the game via a weekly show on German soccer. I can’t even imagine that; since I’ve been living in the U.S., I’ve been able to watch more soccer cheaper than I ever could in England via the likes of Fox Soccer Channel, GolTV, Setanta – and of course, via the internet.”

Jan – that’s awesome. I would pay double for the chance to switch commentators on and off. Maybe more. I love stadium feeds.

PS. John O Shea is the worst footballer of all time. And that’s coming from an Irishman.

I agree. I generally find the English-language commentating in the US to be substandard.
If you know Spanish, you can watch GolTV games (mostly Liga & Bundesliga) in the language. The commentary is significantly better.
The same thing goes for FOX Sports en Español when they show Argentine 1st division action. Spot-on commentary.
It’s a shame that a similar format doesn’t exist for Ligue.
cheers.

Inara – i got home today from school around 4 ish ( New York time ) to catch the end of the Milan – Celtic game on ESPN 2, then i heard the worst thing i could have heard being the Lyon Fan that i am. Tommy Smith and his partner Derek Rae are going to be covering the Lyon – Rangers game next week. ERRRRRRRGGGGGG, i gonna have to watch the match on mute and/or listen to music on my IPod to Avoid the large amount of British Bias for their teams
please tell me how you feel about this

I was googling “Tommy Smith” before sending a complaint to ESPN about the “old onion bag” announcer and I find that I am not alone in my disdain for this man. I have resorted to hitting the mute button whenever he chimes in with his blabber. I think it’s great that ESPN brings us all the Champion League games – but they should get rid of the annoying Smith – who says onion bag anyway?

It annoys me that the announcers pretend to be at the game, when it’s clear they are not!
They say “it’s starting to rain” when it has been pouring down for 1/2 hour and they just noticed it on the close up shot of a drenched player. They don’t see when there is an incident or an offside flag until it’s shown on camera.
BTW I can’t stand it when Smyth calls the net “the old onion bag”!!! I rip my hair out every time. Smyth must go.Posted from

I dont think T.Smyth is really that bad. He’s more amusing than annoying. All he does is give his oppinion and we should respect that, he is after all a comentator.

Moron..moron..moron..please all of you go to ESPN.com, “contact” and send in your complaints. How this little idiot ever got where he is is completely beyond me. He RUINS the football coverage and knows as much about football as my niece’s big toe. Start a campaign to get rid of him and the world will be a better place.
