Lyon Continue Turning Fans Into Internet Zombies
By: Inara | November 3rd, 2008As we count down the hours to Lyon’s Champions League match against Steaua Bucharest, I present you with OL Replay, Lyon’s newest interactive application.
OL Replay is a virtual way for fans to relive all the goals from Lyon games. It’s sort of a cross between reality and a video game. The interesting thing is that you can choose from what angle you’d like to see the goal and from the viewpoint of any player in the nearby vicinity. For example, I decided to replay Karim Benzema’s goal from this weekend’s match against Le Mans, except I watched the goals as if I were Fred , Mathieu Coutadeur, and then the referee. Then for kicks, I pretended to be Yohann Pele.

So far, I haven’t figured out the point behind OL Replay, since until now, normal video replays were working just fine, but it’s an interesting way to spend thirty minutes that you could be using to do something else more productive. You need to have Macromedia Shockwave installed on your computer (though most of you probably already have it), and depending on your processor’s speed, it may take awhile to load. It’s also all in French, but it’s pretty easy to figure out. The application was just made available today, which is why a handful of goals haven’t been added yet, and so far, only Lyon goals are available. I’m guessing in the future, conceded goals will be available too (though that might prove to be too painful to watch).
If you’re like me, you might be wondering why Lyon are suddenly becoming so technologically fancy on their website. Last year, they came out with their super detailed Statistics Center, which documents every single move made by every single player during every single Lyon game. This application is also really handy if you wanted to find out which players are mad at each other. For example, you can find out what the passing rate was between Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa during specific games.
Now all Lyon need to do is come out with an online virtual community, something like The Sims: Olympique Lyonnais Edition. I would totally buy it, make an Inara avatar, become a certain midfielder’s WAG, and then spend his (virtual) money. Sounds fun, right?

Not suprising about Benzema. He clearly said he wanted to win the CL with Lyon and then Puel goes and says that Lyon haven’t a hope! You can’t expect top players to stay when the manager shows a lack of ambition.
Plus I don’t know if Puel knows it, but he was hired to WIN THE CL!! Not ligue 1, not the french cup, the champions league. Otherwise we could have stuck with Perrin.

Ush its not Puels fault,he knows as well as you do that Lyon will not win the champs league this year simply because our squad is not as strong as the like of Inter,Man u and chelsea. Im going to be harsh and say get rid of all the CB(including Cris)as there not good enough,as well as signing a potent winger and classy forward(Not from ligue 1!)its the boards fault, because if it were Puels choice he would probably want to bring in Messi and Robinho, however when your presidant wants to bring in nobodys like Kolo,Mensah and Piquionne and the rest of europe are signing the likes of Deco,Berbatov,Quaresma and Van Der Vaat JMA cannot just say win the champions league unless he starts to show some real ambition in Players like Man City are now.IMO Puel is just being Honest when he says Lyon cannot win the champs league now.

Also how can Lyon have the ambition to win the champions league when for like the last five years we have been a selling club shipping off out talents to champions league heavy waits ?

Only real replacement for Benzema is Balotelli

Sad news, I kinda expected it though. It would be sad to see him playing for Madrid because I hate that football club, but that’s where I’ve always seen him ending up.

BENZEMA TO BARCA PLEASE!!!!

I think Benzema is making a mistake to move so young. He’s only 20 and could really benefit from another 2 years at Lyon. Zidane was 24 when he moved to Juventus.

Ronan : I agree about Puel being honest. However, ceratin things managers should not be seen to say publicly. Lyon is still a top seeded team and one of Houlliers great strengths was the confidence he gave the players by stating in press conferences that teams feared to play Lyon.
I completely agree about the defence and I have been saying that for over 2 seasons now! I was praying they signed Garay or Collocini! Mensah has been a flop, especially at his price!

Guys, did Mensah really get the chance?! He played one freakin game as a cb, and in my opinion he played fine that match, then he gets injuried…let him have more time..he was great at Rennes, he’ll turn out great for us too.

Alex-What clubs were interested in Mensah ? none of them champs league clubs Mensah is a uefa cup CB in my opinion, great at Rennes but failed in Italy, shocking displays at left back(Nancy match)for Lyonais. When you say give him more time yer sure but the guy cant even string 2 or 3 games together without getting injured of some sort. People say he is the rock yer sure but how tall is he about 5″10,not a giant so his strength wont count for much against Ibrahimovic or Berbatov, plus I dont see how a few desent performances at the back for Rennes warrented a 7 million pounds price tag,for 7 million you could buy someone far better than Mensah(Squillaci went out for a lot less and yet he is better than Mensah !)All our CBs are massively over rated, and so is Grosso really his job is to defend although he is far superior at attacking.

I hope to God it’s Barca. Real makes me sick!!!!! Along with Arsenal, Barca is the only team I would be ok with him playing for, even though I hate La Liga; would’ve prefered he’d gone to the EPL. Thank God he doesn’t want to go to Serie A.

Ronan, the problem is will you really get someone worth 8.5 mill to come to play in L1? Aulas has to overpay/be more generous with L1 teams in order to steal these players away from other leagues. Sometimes the players are worth it, sometimes they are not.

John : Fair point but for alot of playesr money really does talk. I’d be very suprised if we couldn’t lure the likes of Saviola or Collocini. France aside, they’d be playing regular champs league football which is what they all want anyway. I think it’s the mentallity you’re talking about which has got us paying way over the odds for french based players. 18 mill for Keita?? He’s a long way off justifying anything close to that. Anyway, not to be a parrot but its our defence which is the glaring weak point.

on benzema leaving – with him responsible for 45% of lyon’s goals so far this season, it would be fair to say their title streak will end at 8.

Avocat du diable here, but isn’t there an argument to be made that if Benzema really has his heart set on leaving AND if Aulas can get something north of 40 million euro for him out of Barca, Madrid, etc, then OL would actually be better off letting him go (and using the money to rebuild the squad)?

Ush: Then why is it that we haven’t been able to attract those players thus far? We’ve been playing in the CL for years but still, they don’t come. I just don’t see it happening until we stop becoming a selling club. Maybe with the revenues from the new stadium and growth of the OL brand in several years. But something has to be done about the tax system: L1 needs to join the “Neoliberal order” of global football; do some “IMF-style” structural adjustments. But yeah, Keita…what can you say. I was never excited about his pick-up, being that you aleady had Govou, who you can’t get rid of no matter what- not that I would want to, I love Sid-and a young talent like Remy waiting in the wings who we had to get rid of and would have eased the disaster that Benzema’s departure will create next year. I really hope Puel gets Keita to fulfill his price tag, but I think Keita’s greatest contribution so far has been to “light-a-fire” under Govou’s bottom and make him a better player, due to fear of losing his spot.

UA: Yes, your argument seems logical, but look at the money OL has spent so far on the offensive side of the ball, and our second highest scorer- tied with Juninho- is a defensive midfeilder Jean Makoun! The money from Benz’s sale will be very welcome to rectruit more players and balance the squad, but like WILL pointed-out, Benz makes-up 45% of the offense. This offensive anemia has to be cured or OL will be in big trouble once Benzema is gone.

I think Lyon are capable of bringing in European talents(e.g-Tiago and Grosso)however many times I have read articles about Lyon being interested in a quality player but there interest isnt very strong and subsequently they miss out. Look at Mancini he wanted to come to Lyon and it was a deal which was more than possible to be done with Roma but for the right price, however unfortunately because I think Mancini is great, Lyon didnt really try that hard in the end to get him. Look at Garay,Heinze,Adriano, crespo,Cruz,Oddo,Camoranesi and Trezeguet all deals which could and in JMA heart should have been done. Also when I look in the past at sales of players like Essien,Diarra and Abidal,we recieved a massive transfer fee however the money we got was barely spent on a replacement,so with the Benzema sale I fear this will happen again well sell him and then not spend the money wisely. There are quality players out there for us but OL just arent willing to put the effort in to sign them and unfortunately the ligue 1 Idea cannot really work now because at the minute I dont see any top class players there, look at Porto 2004 thats who lyon have to base them selves around.

We have attracted the likes of Grosso. Was just gonna say but Ronan pretty much made my point!

I also think Benz is too young to leave. But I think we have to accept it as inevitability. It was just a question of when.
If we’re very lucky, we can persuade him to stay for an extra year so that he leaves in 2010. It’d be better if he stayed until the World Cup.

Also, I think his interviews are being taken slightly out of context. I don’t think he’s saying “I’m going to leave this summer, see ya” but that he’s eventually going to leave and Lyon need to prepare for it.
I do think Lyon can hold onto him for another year if they wanted to, unless a truly absurd bid comes in – and I’m talking about absurd.

Ronan: Just because Lyon shows interest in a player or puts in a bid, doesn’t mean that the player is actuallyh interested or even considering joining the team. I imagine that agents sometimes feign interest in lesser clubs to increase the bidding. Also, Tiago needed playing time, as soon as he got an offer from a bigger club, he was gone. And Grosso was thought to be washed-up and came to the “elephant graveyard” for many older, talented players who are at the end of their careers e.g., Makalele.

John : Wouldn’t agree there, Grosso had just been an instrumental part of Italy winning the world cup and Italy have looked far better when he has come on in the qualifiers so far.

Ush: I just meant that that’s what people thought and were saying about Grosso. Obviously, they were wrong.
