Domenech Returning to Lyon? WHAT?

By: Inara | March 28th, 2008

Let’s get something straight. Almost everyone hates Raymond Domenech. He says outrageous things, pisses off players and managers alike with his antics, and has so many enemies that he ought to look into hiring a bodyguard. But dammit, I like the guy. And I will never stop appreciating the fact that he took over a second division backwater club back in the late 80’s, got them promoted to the top flight, and qualified them for Europe - all in the span of three years.

Aulas: “Raymond Domenech began his coaching career at Lyon, he can also finish at Lyon.”

All the same, I’m a little discomfited by the most recent bombshell Jean-Michel Aulas dropped into the press today.

I admit, I would love to see a big personality coaching Lyon. I’m tired of wishy-washy managers like Alain Perrin, who fade into the background when surrounded by people like Bernard Lacombe and Aulas. The rumors are particularly suspicious given how the timing works out: Domenech’s contract with the FFF ends in 2010, which is when Lyon’s new stadium will be completed.

BUT…if Domenech’s tactics for Les Bleus are anything to go by, I don’t think it will work out. He likes defense, Lyon don’t. And anyway, at the moment there is only one holding midfielder on the squad, which is six less than the amount Domenech usually requires.

Just some Aulas communication strategy, in my opinion.
I think the final purpose is to start Perrin’s succession (not Domenech of course, rather someone like Deschamps able to lead a team to the CL final).

no disrespect, but that makes no sense, salieri. Lyon had an opportunity to get Deschamps and they chose Perrin instead. If they wanted someone like Deschamps they would have pounced on him, instead of making these statements about Domenech.Sometimes I think Aulas has lost the plot somewhat.

Murinho is in Milan to negociate Inter contract… Seems like he will not take Alain’s job after all…
    Just kidding…

Here’s a nice article on Domenech and how he defies logic and yet still gets results:

Lucky, we all knew Mourinho would never come here (in fact, most wouldn’t want him to). But it sucks being refused, all the same.

Domenech’s record hasn’t been very impressive since the wc. 2 losses to scotland, a loss to spain, ties against morocco, italy and ukraine. marginal wins against lithuania, slovakia, and england. …and a 6-0 win against Faroe Islands, the only game where they were able to score a bunch of goals.

I don’t agree that his methods are working.

Lyon don’t need Domenech. I agree with Inara, when she says that he prefered defence, and we all know that Lyon, don’t like play that kind of football.Domenech is good, but we don’t need you.

Lefutur, I heard some weeks ago that Deschamps could not join OL because of a “timing” problem. But he also said that he would be interested in being OL’s coach in the future.
Anyways I’m pretty sure Perrin won’t be our coach next season. Even if he wins L1 and Coupe de France.

It’s funny actually, as I’m a Houllier fan but he didn’t always do the logical thing. I like Barca and Rijkaard, but I don’t think he’s a good coach yet he’s won the CL so what do I know?? Anyway, Deschamps would be the ideal choice. I wouldn’t want Maurinho either, even though he’s a good coach but I’m excited at the ambition of Lyon even having talks with him!

The team already has achieved sustainable competitive advantage in Ligue 1. And I don’t think Puel would be able to provide us with this so much valuable added value, call it craziness.
