Le Mans vs. Lyon (Champions League Warm Up)

By: Inara | February 15th, 2008

Time to get back to business.

Lyon will have one eye (actually, both eyes) firmly fixed on next Wednesday’s clash with Manchester United when they travel to Le Mans tomorrow. The LFP kindly pushed this fixture up to an earlier time frame, which will make recovery easier over the weekend.

I’m sure all of you remember when a depleted and weakened Le Mans team kicked Lyon us out of the Coupe de la League a few weeks ago. Not cool. Le Mans also came to the Gerland last August and were two goals up before Lyon decided to score three within a seven minute span. So while I won’t add Le Mans to Lyon’s black sheep list (currently featuring Toulouse and Nice), they still know how to annoy us.

Match background:

Lyon have played Le Mans seven times before in the league (Le Mans have only been in the top flight for a few years), and all seven times, Lyon came away with the victory. But as we’ve seen this year, past history is meaningless, and this could be the year when the trend changes.

Le Mans will have nearly a full squad at their disposal. Tulio De Melo, Romaric, Gervinho, and Ibrahima Camara make their return to first team action after two weeks off (injuries, African Cup of Nations, etc). Only Gregory Cerdan is suspended though he has appealed that decision.

Given that they defeated Lyon two weeks ago in the CdL, Le Mans will have high expectations during this match, especially with Lyon distracted by their upcoming Champions League match. So they will use this opportunity to add another victory over the champions to their tally.

As for Lyon, this match will be taken seriously, especially since Lyon have a slim four point lead over Bordeaux, and a loss at Le Mans coupled with a Bordeaux victory this weekend could really hurt Lyon’s title prospects. It also doesn’t help that this game is the last chance Lyon have to get their act together.

Judging from the comments coming out of the Lyon camp in the past few days, the biggest problem the team is having is managing good collective play. Right now, they are depending on individual talents to sneak their way through, but Lyon’s usual team play has been pretty much nonexistent in the last couple of weeks, something that is absolutely necessary when taking on opponents of Manchester United’s caliber.

Let’s hope Perrin gets it right this weekend.

Lyon info:

Fred, who’s been looking oh so good in the last few weeks, is out with a sore throat. But at least it’s a minor affliction - he’ll be okay before Wednesday. Juninho is still “not at 100%” but will be making the trip anyway. He knows he needs to play this weekend to be in shape for the CL game though he won’t play for more than an hour at best. It’s critical that he not injure himself further.

Le groupe lyonnais: Coupet, Vercoutre - Clerc, Reveillère, Squillaci, Boumsong, Bodmer, Grosso - Källström, Toulalan, Crosas, Mounier, Juninho, Delgado - Ben Arfa, Govou, Benzema, Keita.

Good news is that Kader Keita is back after a long African Cup of Nations tournament. He’s been saying how he’s eager to continue his good form and how he wants to earn a starting spot on the team. Hey, Kader? If you play at Lyon like you did at Lille, you can start here eight days a week.

Oh, and the BEST news? Cris will be playing his first game since his injury last August this weekend. Along with Romain Beynie, Cris will be playing with the CFAs against Raon. If he continues his rate of progression, we just might see Cris in the CL return leg.

Expected lineup:

Coupet
Reveillere - Squillaci - Boumsong - Grosso
Juninho - Toulalan - Kallstrom
Keita - Benzema - Ben Arfa

Perrin knows he has to rest players, and I think if Fred had been available, Karim Benzema would be starting this match on the bench. Still, Benzema will probably be brought off in the second half, either for Sidney Govou, Kader Keita, or Cesar Delgado, depending on who starts the match.

It’s also a toss up as to whether it will be Kim Kallstrom or Mathieu Bodmer getting the nod in the third midfield spot - I would guess Kallstrom though I would prefer Bodmer. I also would like to see Marc Crosas get some more minutes. As for right back, Francois Clerc has been getting the nod over Anthony Reveillere in the past few weeks, and his performances have been backing up that decision. So Perrin just might save Clerc for the United match.

You can check here for links. If any of you find a good stream, I’d be grateful if you posted the link in the comments for those wanting to watch the match.

Expected Result:

I’m going to go with a 1-1 draw. Something tells me that Lyon won’t fight too hard tomorrow while Le Mans will keep coming at us with their talented and speedy attackers.

If I’m optimistic for wednesday, I say 0-0.
    VERY optimistic.

What I saw yesterday is so sad. I’ve seen No Ben Arfa, No Bodmer, No Delgado on the pitch.
11 Le Mans players against 8 Lyonnais. We had to lose.

I don’t manage to see the games, so can’t comment. But regarding Ben Arfa, was it simply a case of him having a poor game. Or is anyone else worried at the possibility that he’s set his sights on playing elsewhere now after proving himself, and simply won’t bother for the rest of the season.

This bad game is due to a real lack of motivation and collective spirit.
It is obvious that this year’s Lyon B team is very weak. We are definitely Benzema, Juninho and Toulalan-dependent.

Wednesday will be another day, another competition, and hopefully another team spirit. I am not worried.

OMG, I’m not watching the game, but Bordeaux is thrashing Monaco 5:0 away from home! If they keep winning this way, I doubt that we could retain Ligue 1! Our lead is now down to one point…

Aaaah - full time and Bordeaux have won 6:0 (all in one half!). As well as being only one point ahead, our previously fabulous goal difference has been narrowed to only +7 v. Bordeaux. My heart bleeds for Lyon.

    Oh CRAP.

Aulas was pissed this morning and reamed Perrin about keeping Benzema, Toulalan, and Grosso on the bench yesterday.

Also, I had a dream that Lyon lost 4-0 to MU. Ay ay ay.

There’s an old wives’ tale where I’m from that all dreams show the opposite of what they portend. So that must mean Lyon will win on Wednesday, right?
(Ok, that wasn’t a very tactically insightful comment, I admit. But you gotta have faith…)

Inara You said it yourself in the title: It was a champions League WARM-UP game.
You don’t use all your strength for warm up.
Wednesday will be another game with 2 full strength squads.

As for Bordeaux, they have been playing great, and I don’t mind the competition. Keep in mind that in a race it is easier to chase than to lead.
Everyone will have to be at their best now.

i don’t understand why aulas ripped perrin a new one for resting some players. how else is benzema going to be fresh for wednesday if he had started against Le Mans? he’s overplayed this season as it is. Juninho started so right there OL should have had all the tools they needed to win without Benzema. it must be very difficult coaching Lyon being bullied by Aulas all the time. not that i think Perrin is a great coach or anything but its no wonder why no world class coaches want to coach this team.

Anyway, Aulas is a sore loser. He will always find an excuse. If it is not the pitch or the referee, it is the coaching.
Still, he is a great president, and a “visionnaire”. But he should stay out of the coaching. I don’t mind Lacombe being into it as he has some experience, but Aulas…

sam: HBA was actually probably the third best lyonnais on the pitch saturday… which isn’t saying much since after coupet and squillaci the rest of the team was woeful.

whether he’s wanting away this summer or not, playing badly won’t help him either way, so that’s a silly idea.

pity fred wasn’t healthy, because with a more normal front line le mans was definitely beatable as bad as we were; they were no great shakes.

was OL already thinking about MU? possible. in fact despite their going through a rough patch of late i can think of no other reason for their bring so very very poor against MUC72. and except for govou, who was out of position, JAB who was as hapless as many feared he would be, and delgado, who was just horrible (if he gets another start soon, i think I’LL start hanging around T-V to see if i can’t wrangle a pro contract!), the team was above all tentative, hesitant, mentally absent.

i’m not convinced they’ll make a big showing wednesday, but it’s not based on this match, more the indifferent form they’ve been in for a few weeks.

Too right Benzema needed to rest. Ferguson had the sense to rest Ronaldo at the weekend in preparation for Wednesday and Man U were placing a cup match. Can you imagine the critiscm if Benzema had started and then picked up a major injury.

Boumsong living up to expectations, a mess of a defender. Unacceptable for a club like Lyon.

boumsong was a mess against le mans, although it would be harsh to blame him for the goal, but so far he’s been pretty solid for OL, definitely a step up from anderson.

cris played 90 minutes with the reserves this weekend and says he’ll play if the coach asks him. with just ONE L1 match next to toto under his belt i’d say play him, but that’s not the case.

perrin’s job is not in question right now except perhaps in his own mind. he’ll definitely stay on if OL wins the double, and probably will if OL finishes champs, even on the last day. continuity is a good thing in itself, and i don’t see anyone coming to coach OL that enough better to ignore that fact.

AP’s not responsible for coupet’s, cris’, fred’s or juni’s injuries. he’s not responsible for keita or delgado playing like a pile of old pants; he may or may not have a responsability for fabio santos or belhadj leaving in midseason but all things considered one can’t lay OL’s present troubles (a CL round of 16 spot and being in first place being only relative as troubles go) completely on his doorstep!

    I agree with you guignol.
I am especially pissed off about the over confidence of a few players. Starting with Fred who said he was going to score a few goals against Man U… how arrogant.
I don’t mind confidence like Cris saying he was ready to play. But there, Fred should revise his humble book.

I hope he proves me wrong.
