Happy Birthday, Karim!
By: Inara | December 19th, 2007
Today is Karim Benzema’s 20th birthday! He’ll unfortunately have to celebrate it by going to practice, but after this Saturday’s game against Nancy, he’ll have earned a well deserved rest.
But even though it’s his birthday, he’s been the present for Lyon fans.
Since his senior team debut in January 2005, he’s played in 58 league matches with 18 goals and in 9 Champions league games with 6 goals. Not only that, but he’s been taking more responsibility within the squad, backing up his assertion that he’s not a little kid anymore. He’s gone from being a backup to one of Lyon’s key players.
Karim, I wish you a very very happy birthday, and may your 20th be blessed with many more goals and no more injuries!
And in case any of you were interested, here is an interview Benzema game yesterday. Here are some selected quotes:
“I know where I want to go and that’s very, very high, right to the top.”
“I have not changed but things around me have. I feel that a lot is expected from me. It puts pressure on me but I like that. I’m not the young kid making his debut any more. Everybody trusts me. When Lyon concede a goal, the older guys such as Juninho or Govou talk to the others on the pitch. Now, I do that as well. I might be a bit shy off the pitch but on it, I’m different.”
“This is the result of years of hard work. I wasn’t quite sure when but I knew it would pay off. I have a lot of confidence. If I miss a chance, I know I will get another one.”
