He’s Not Just Scoring…
By: Inara | December 5th, 2007The LFP recently published another article extolling Karim Benzema, except this one wasn’t as focused on his goal scoring as it was on his assisting. It turns out that not only is Benzema L1’s top goalscorer (with 12 goals), but he’s the fourth best assister (with 4). But the top three are all tied for first place with five assists, so Benzema is actually one assist away from topping that table as well.

Don’t forget, to go along with his domestic records this season, he’s scored one goal in the Champions League, one goal in the Coupe de la Ligue, and two goals and an assist in France’s Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. So 16 goals and 5 assists from a 19 year old - and it’s only just December.
Not bad, right? He’s certainly destroying those rumors that he’s “just” a goalscorer.

He’s a pretty impressive player - no way around it. He’s one of those where the stats don’t really express how important he is. When I’ve seen him play (admittedly, not that often) he’s always stuck out.

Maybe Bobby Smith will take a look at said article and realize French teams can “bulge the ol onion bag”.

i thought benzema’s ball control and technique against strasbourg was the best i’ve ever seen from him. even when he was shooting he was doing so much to trouble the defense and get other players into space. for a while he was almost playing on the left wing and i thought it was weird because he didn’t seem to be in any hurry to score. but the team was playing great and OL were notching up goals from kallstrom, then juninho in the first 20m minutes. In the second half I wondered if Benzema was gonna put his shooting boots on…and he did, an explosive goal out of nowhere, just like we expect from him. It was a truly remarkable performance.
