Oh That Eto’o Rumor
By: Inara | July 26th, 2008I wasn’t planning a post on Lyon’s supposed interest in Samuel Eto’o because I thought that these rumors would have blown away by now, but with my inbox flooded with over thirty google alerts in four different languages - in just one day - I guess I need to be more proactive about it.
I can even tell you exactly how this mess started.
Two days ago, L’Equipe published a long interview of Jean-Michel Aulas, where he talked about numerous subjects, such as next season’s title race, the future stadium, the Champions League, and yes, Eto’o.

BFFs for life.
All of sudden, Barcelona want to swap Eto’o for Karim Benzema, possibly even offering cash as part of the bargain. Not only that, but Barca are saying that the only way Lyon will get Eto’o is if Benzema is part of the negotiations. (Or, depending on which newspapers you read, Lyon are actually interested in Didier Drogba).
But just hold on a second.
Aulas never said that Lyon are specifically interested in buying Eto’o. That’s just the media taking things totally out of context. What he really said was that he didn’t think it was a good idea to have a player whose salary far exceeded that of his other teammates. But if Puel decided that in order for Lyon to win the Champions League, he would need a player like Eto’o, Aulas promised that he would do everything within his power to sign such a player, even though they aren’t really within Lyon’s reach.
And that’s it. Not terribly exciting, right?
But let’s pretend for a moment that these rumors have some substance to them. It’s no secret that Aulas is a big fan of Eto’o and has been after him since his Mallorca days. In fact, Lyon almost signed Eto’o four years ago, but the negotiations were so protracted (Aulas negotiated too hard) that Barca eventually signed him right under Aulas’s big French nose. It’s also well known that Eto’o has a soft spot for Lyon and thinks highly of the club. Eto’o’s close friend, Jean II Makoun, recently confirmed that he had spoken about Lyon to Eto’o, though he denied they spoke of transfers (*cough* yeah right).
First, let’s examine the problems associated with Eto’o coming to Lyon:
1. His wages. When French taxes are taken into account, Lyon would have to pay a lot of money. This isn’t necessarily the obstruction though. Lyon could manage his wages if they really tried, but what Aulas said was true - his salary might cause resentment in the locker room. Lyon are still a small club in the sense that they don’t have the allure of bigger clubs, so the players won’t accept the huge wage discrepancies that they would otherwise tolerate in a more prestigious club.
2. Lyon are in France. No matter how much Eto’o might admire Lyon, I doubt he feels the same way about the league. No matter how you dress it, L1 is a step down from La Liga.
3. The interest of other clubs. He’s currently being followed by several of them, most notably Real Madrid, Valencia, Inter Milan, and Tottenham. Besides Valencia, the other three are far wealthier. Oh, and there is that club in Uzbekistan.
4. Aulas iz a liar. He has a long history of making things up to suit his purposes. I still love him though.
5. The decision is not up to Aulas. One of the perks of being general manager is that Puel has the final say on transfers. And Puel is a very smart man who will not only see the inherent dangers of signing Eto’o but will actually go by his good judgment.
Next, let’s look at the even more improbable swap deal that Barca are supposedly demanding.
1. Lyon don’t want a swap. They want to pair Eto’o with Benzema. Currently, Lyon operate with a lone striker, but coupled with Benzema’s flexibility as well as Puel’s open-mindedness about formation, it is possible that a two striker lineup could be found to accommodate them both.
2. Aulas isn’t stupid. Eto’o is an oft-injured 27 year old who may be on the decline. He’s also known to be a locker room cancer (then again, that might have been solely because of Rolandinho, who can’t bother him anymore). Whereas Benzema is only 20 and hasn’t even begun tapping into his potential.
3. Benzema isn’t going anywhere. He’s said emphatically that he doesn’t want to leave Lyon this summer and may stay next summer as well.
4. Lyon are trying to become more competitive in Europe. Getting rid of Benzema for Eto’o won’t improve the team. In fact, it might even weaken them. But having both of them will obviously be a definite improvement.
Not to be a party pooper, but I just don’t see this happening. I know most of you agree with me, and hopefully one day, the media can back off and stop flooding my inbox with all these google alerts.
Instead, I think one of two things are happening. Either Aulas is throwing a red herring out there, trying to distract everyone from Lyon’s real target (Diego Milito or Frederic Piquionne). Or Aulas is pulling his usual stunt in which he promises to sign a big player but tells us in advance how it probably won’t happen, then fails in his attempt, and then tells us he “tried.”

Quaresma would only come if we offered him A LOT of money, which is pretty much the same reason we probably won’t get Eto’o, and if we did get him he’d probably cause even more problems than Ben Arfa did if someone on the squad ended up out performing him, which is a possibility. I like the squad as is without Baros. Left backs that are available anyone?

Abdou Razack Traorè from Rosenborg maybe? He’s a big talent, and was named as one of the 50 biggest talents last year by world soccer…

I’m sorry andy, but Sidney Govou maybe has less “artistic” qualities, but is way much better for the team than Quaresma.
We don’t need an ‘artist’. If so, we would have keep Ben Arfa.
We need to win games, not to perform shows.Posted from

So you think Quaresma is a player that won’t win games? Look at Cr. Ronaldo, he was artistic the first season for Man Utd, and then; he became the best player in the world…

that may be true andy, but you know the old saying ” high risk, high reward “.
Look at the drama thats going on with C. Ronaldo at the moment, some of it may be management, but some of it is also ronaldo. Lyon seem to want team first kind of guys. Having a player with great skills is great, but if he gets ” moody ” too often and doesnt wanna play for your club, then there lies in the problem.

looks like Inara might be right about the Aulas smokescreen theory

PIQUIONNE????
If he’s the best that Lyon could do, we should have kept Loic Remy!

Apparently Lyon are about to offer for Piquionne and Sergio Garcia, are still following Diego Milito and Ricard Oliviera, want to get Jimmy Briand, and are also keeping tabs on Louis “I’m broken” Saha and Samuel Eto’o.
Ugh. Who isn’t Lyon trying to sign these days?
Honestly, I’m a woman of small demands. I’d settle for just getting rid of Baros and promoting Tafer to 3rd striker. That’s it.

I agree Inara, I still think Freds got so much to give aswell.
Olivera signed permanent from Milan so would be mega bucks. Milito is a decent option and I’d say Garcia would cost too much aswell and is more of a winger anyway.

Fred’s got talent when he’s not being a drama queen. But I’m not liking the way he’s conducting himself at the management level. His contract expires next year, which is why Lyon are willing to sell him, or else they won’t get anything out of him. He’s the club’s third most expensive signing and has one of the highest wages, and yet he has really only had one good season - his first back in 2005/2006, so that’s basically 15m down the toilet if he walks away on a free.
But that’s what he wants to do. He’s refusing to sign an extension (and pay raise) at Lyon, yet he won’t leave either, which is why he’s refusing all offers - he turned down Tottenham, Bremen, PSG, and Roma within the span of a year. His thinking is that as a free agent, he’ll get a much better deal in terms of club choices and salaries.
I don’t really like his attitude. He’s been injured for basically the last two years, has a history of discipline problems within the club, so the least he could do is sign that damn extension.

Barca are apparently willing to sell Eto’o for 10m if they can get first option on Benzema for the next summer.

Ouch! That’s got to be a headache for Aulas, it seems like a great offer, but with Benzema stating he could stay at Lyon for many more seasons than just next year, would it be foolish to seal his departure now?

Andy made a valid point, in that Abou Razack Traore is a great talent, on terms with Alexandre Tettey or Per Siljan Skeljbred, all of Rosenberg, which has a fantastic academy. He would be a good purchase in my opinion, as he would be a starter on the left in two years.
As for the Briand rumors, he is a good player, I like him alot, but he doesnt fit into Lyon’s formation, and with Jo pointing out the current midfielder glut, a single striker seems likely. Fred and Benzema are two very good strikers, and Baros isnt a bad third striker either, but then again, he is expendable. The problem for Lyon is if they want to bring someone in, they will be 3rd choice, something Milito, Briand or Piquonne dont see as an option. I agree that Tafer is ready for Ligue 1, and we must not forget other promising young strikers life Yann Ekra, Roman Miguet or Alexandre Lacazette. A deal for a new striker may push these talents out of the club in two or three years, when all look to be as much a prospect as Tafer. Do we spend big now on a stable of strikers who are not that good (well Etoo is an impossibility and it looks like Milito is too, he likes Serie A) or do we hedge are bets on Fred and Benz and let Tafer develop, and also possibly another young striker in the coming years? Difficult decisions, but if the CL is the goal, then we will need someone to help out as Fred’s form is to eratic.

Benzema’s agent said that Karim absolutely wouldn’t leave this year and would stay at least for one year. What if Lyon don’t advance in the CL and lose the domestic title? Will Benzema feel like it’s time to move on? If so, then that 10mill for Eto’o would sound extremely sweet. Although I still think Eto’o’s salary will be time bomb, unleashing higher salary demands from other players and potential signees.
And I think Tafer’s time is now! Benz will be around at the most till after next season and Tafer needs to play now. If only someone would take Baros.Posted from

Funny people are talking about Rosenborg players on here, as I watched a lot of their match against NAC to see Stoor who’s about to sign for my first team - Fulham. From what I saw, I’m not sure I can agree with Andy about Tettey, he was terrible, missed about 4 sitters yesterday, considerably worse than Baros.

I didn’t mention tettey, but he’s a huge talent. He’s a midfielder and cant be compared to Sams bestfriend baros…

Ha sorry, I meant Corey not andy… Seemed like he was playing up front against NAC, wasn’t too impressed. Anyway back to Lyon, agree with Inara that selling Baros and keeping Tafer for 3rd choice striker would be a good.

Also, as a follower of norwegian football, how do you rate Stoor? Do you think he will be able to cope with the premiership?

Stoor developed huge while playing for Rosenborg. When he arrived at Rosenborg, he played average the first season. He was best in defence, but not offensive at all. That changed this season, and he’s become one of the best right backs from sweden. He even was in Swedens Euro 2008 squad, so it’s no doubt he got qualities. I think he will develop even more in Fulham.
When it comes to the Tettey-thing: He played central midfielder that game. You blind or something?

Sam, you probably saw Konan up front in the game, or possibly Traore. But Tettey and Skejlbred are central midfielders, although Per can find himself out wide depending on the formation. Traore can be used as a striker, but he is not much of a finisher yet. Konan is not the most reliable striker out there, he probably missed the 4 sitters.

Sorry if I’m mistaken re the Tettey thing, I looked at footage again and he was indeed a midfielder who seemed to get forward a lot and be at the center of every chance. He missed about 3 should be goals which made me think he was a center forward. I’m pretty sure it’s Tettey - playing with a number 10 shirt?
You can see highlights here:
http://webtv.tv2.no/webtv/sumo/?treeId=2081 and in the bottom right, clicking on the Rosenborg 2-0 NAC link. Sorry if I’ve hit a nerve here - really didn’t mean too. Tettey’s finishing was pretty woeful in the match, Konan missed one or two good chances too I think. Wish there was more coverage of the scandinavian leagues available.Posted from
