The Benzema and Ben Arfa Rumors Spiral Out of Control
By: Inara | February 12th, 2008You would think that Lyon have reincarnated versions of Pele and Maradona the way clubs are acting these days. It’s honestly getting ridiculous and downright tiring.
I’m sure by now many of you have heard of the latest rumors about Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa. Apparently Manchester United (via Alex Ferguson) approached Aulas with a €60m offer for both of them this coming summer. Because you know how at Old Trafford, having Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Louis Saha, and that new kid Manucho just isn’t enough. They need Benzema too. And I guess Fergie felt that he needs two players to replace Ryan Giggs since Nani might not be enough.

The Bs are on Christmas lists all over Europe.
I for one am very skeptical about all this. First of all, it was the Sun that broke the story on this latest offer. That should be a big clue right there. Also, it’s no coincidence that Lyon play Manchester United next week. Hmm. Suspicious yet?
Let’s pretend for a second (a very short, skeptical, second) that everything the media reports is true. Which means that unfortunately for Fergie, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and even Chelsea were quicker in making offers for the duo (oh yes, it’s “true” – read here, here, and here. And let’s not forget those reports that Real Madrid are prepared to offer a blank check to get first option on Benzema, and with Barcelona throwing in their own players to receive the same. At least Milan had enough sense to pretend like they weren’t interested.
Yeah, so basically Benzema isn’t going anywhere this summer. Not so sure about Ben Arfa, who isn’t as attached to the club and is more of a glory hound. But one thing is clear. For once, Aulas isn’t thinking about the money. He isn’t interested in cashing in because he knows that Lyon need these two guys. So let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that Benzema and Ben Arfa feel the same.

That’s one important quote. “Aulas isn’t thinking about the money. He isn’t interested in cashing in because he knows that Lyon need these two guys.”
I also like that comment he made about swapping BA and Ronaldo and Man U still paying Lyon a sum.

It must be nice to be millions and millions in debt and still get to sign whoever you want.

Typical English press with Manchester United. I hope they never get their filthy mits on any of are players and they can keep that greaseball Crisitano Ronaldo. I will love it if we beat them, oh god how I’d loooooooove it!!!

Ben Arfa said in an (very interesting) interview for l’Equipe Magazine a few weeks ago that he was planning on staying two or three more years at Lyon. So I don’t think you should be worried about him either.

In general terms I worry about them leaving just because they’re so damn good. Though I think there are many rational reasons why Benzema at least will be around for a few more seasons.
BUT as a general principle in life I don’t ever believe what is written in The Sun. Its not quite the bottom rung of creative English journalism but its close to the bottom. High profile football news sells well to The Sun readership so I don’t think we need to be any more worried than we were before this latest rumour broke. Now if the two B’s really, really shine at Old Trafford it will be interesting to see what crazy figure gets put on their heads in The Sun(and frankly every other English tabloid).

Benzema and Benarfa have many fans here in Korea. They fascinated so many Korean football fans with their fantastic performances in Peace Cup last year.
I am sure both of them will show their talents in front of Perguson next week together with Juninho.

Dont worry, both will be staying atleast 2 years. Marseille should worry about loosing Nasri though, likewise Monaco with Menez and Rennes with Briand.

Has anyone thought abotu signing Gourcuff from Milan, it seems he wants out this summer, he would be a good defensive midfield addition, he can pass and tackle very well.

Ush – “they can keep that greaseball Crisitano Ronaldo”
lmao…..oh man my sides are hurting from this funny comment. So true lol.
Corey – “he would be a good defensive midfield addition, he can pass and tackle very well”
ummmm, last time i check Gourcuff was an attacking Midfielder, and plus the form he’s in right now with milan, i would skeptical about getting him.

oh and about Benzema and Ben Arfa, or as the english medias like to call them ” The Bens “…..
if they were to ever leave Lyon now , i would cry in my sleep for a hundred days and a hundred nights.

Ya, Gourcuff is usually left wing isn’t it?

he is played in various positions, but he is always out of position with milan. If you ever watched him play for Rennes you would realise he is actually a pretty astute central midfielder and would fit into Kim Kallstrom/Bodmer’s spot pretty easily. I say defensive midfielder because Toulalan was a central midfielder that attacked when we bought him from Nantes, its why we also bought Alou Diarra, but he turned out alright I guess….
