Patrick Muller Out For SIX Months
By: Inara | December 3rd, 2007
I was in the process of writing a post titled “The Muller Mystery” when I happened to check Lyon’s official website. And there it was – the awful news that Patrick Muller has torn a ligament in his knee and is expected to be out for six months.
Great. He’s the third defensive player to tear his knee ligaments within the span of four months. First it was Gregory Coupet. Then it was Cris. And now Muller. Just terrific really. I mean it’s not like Lyon need good defenders anyway.
Who am I kidding? After watching the dismal attempts of Sebastien Squillaci and Anderson at “communicating,” I was really looking forward to Muller offering us some stability. Granted, he’s been out for the entire season anyway, but he was doing really well, playing in CFA games and all that.
But then he had to go hurt himself last weekend. Damn you, Pat.
I’m really worried though for him more than Lyon. He was looking forward to Switzerland’s Euro 2008 campaign, and since his contract is ending at the end of this year, he wanted to leave Lyon with a bang. But it looks like he’s suffering the Claudio Cacapa situation. And Muller might never regain his full strength and fitness.
I am tres tres sad. The least I can hope for right now is that Aulas offers to extend his contract for another year at least.

This is the end of Patrick Muller at Lyon…

Bad news indeed. I can’t see JMA renewing his contract whilst he’s injured. I suspect this will prove to be one injury too many for Muller in terms of his Lyon career.

Muller should have never left Lyon, he may have had a more fulfilling career. Now it looks like he is destined to end his career in obscurity if he does not get a pitty extension. Shame.

I wouldn’t be so sure. Both JMA and muller are smart and you always need smart insiders in this game. Otherwise you’re left with people like Anigo who are just the more voacal insiders.
JMA has that Berlusconi quality that he wants to keeps charismatic ex-players in the organization. I can easily see Caçapa or Juninho working there once they’re done with their respective careers.Posted from

It’s interesting that you mention that, because I’m working on a post on Lyon’s staff, and all of them (except Perrin and Galtier) are former Lyon players. Cacapa and Juninho have both expressed an interest in working for Lyon one day, and if you include Muller as well, that would be four former Lyon captains (including Anderson).

Update:
Muller apparently had a choice between a minor surgery, which might or might not fix the problem, but would allow him to get back to playing sooner, or a major surgery which will fix the problem but keep him out six months. It was a tough decision, but he opted for the major surgery even though it will mean he can’t participate in Euro 2008 in front of his home crowd. But he did it because he is still keeping faith that his career is not yet over.
Aulas will be meeting with Muller soon to talk about a contract extension. According to Le Progres, Aulas likes to “pamper his foals” for services rendered, and he hasn’t forgotten the many important contributions Muller made to Lyon, especially that winning CdL goal in 2001.

Well it only makes sense to extend his contract as Muller will, like Cacapa, be a defensive coach one day. Juninho will probably too, and we all know Sonny is currently the striker coach at lyon. I prefer to have ex players as coaches, especially with Lyon.

Me too. The majority of OL’s technical staff are actually former OL players. Aulas is stubborn in that he won’t let new managers bring in their own staff, just a single assistant (hence the problems with Deschamps’s demands).
