Poll: Right Backs Playing Musical Chairs
By: Inara | February 27th, 2008
If you’re like me, you’re undecided about who our starting right back should be. We have two good ones in Anthony Réveillère and François Clerc. They aren’t spectacular by any means, but they are solid and don’t often disappoint.
Unlike all other positions at Lyon, right back is the one position that is under nearly constant rotation. In fact, no one seems to know exactly who the starter is. Last year under Gerard Houllier, it looked like Reveillere was in the driving seat, but Clerc played often enough - and in several very big games - that the question was never truly answered.
This year, Alain Perrin seems to prefer Clerc, but again, it’s hard to be sure. Clerc has been putting in better performances as of late, but then Reveillere will find a way to one up him. He usually does.
Both players are French internationals (though nowadays Domenech prefers to call up Clerc as opposed to Reveillere), well experienced in European football, and are refreshingly versatile.
Clerc is able to play in more advanced positions all along the right side as both a winger and a midfielder, and he does this relatively well. Reveillere can switch sides to the left and often plays there when Fabio Grosso is unavailable. It is not uncommon to see them on the pitch together. And both players are regularly linked with Juventus. Like every six months. It’s annoying.
Anyway, I’ve always had the impression that Reveillere was a more defensive player than Clerc though I could be wrong. Clerc is the better crosser but Reveillere is better at tracking back, and besides that Mancini moment last year, he hardly ever miscalculates his opponents. Whereas Clerc’s tactical awareness could use some tweaking.
I think that right now, Reveillere is the better player. But at 28, he’s probably reached the peak of his abilities. From here on out, it’s just going to be the accumulation of experience. But Clerc is constantly improving - right before our very eyes actually. And as a home grown player, the chances of Clerc staying at Lyon for the long term is much more likely.

Francois isn’t as pretty as Anthony, but his nose has character.
And finally, here is a bit of background on these two:
Reveillere made his professional debut for Rennes, who were then coached by Paul Le Guen. During that time, he also spent six months at Valencia (24 league appearances in six months, as well as six in the CL) but eventually decided that he wanted to return to France. Later on, he would join his old mentor Le Guen at the then two time French champions. In 133 league appearances for Lyon, his total goal tally is just two - one of which he scored this year against Monaco. Check out his stats here.
Clerc, whose promotion to Lyon’s first team is also due to Le Guen, is a Lyon youth product whose only foray outside of his hometown club was a short loan to Toulouse, where he only made seven appearances. He returned the following year as Lyon’s third choice right back (behind Reveillere and Lamine Diatta), but due to Reveillere getting injured and Diatta leaving for the African Cup of Nations, Clerc was finally given a platform to shine - which he did. In fact, he impressed enough that he received his first France NT call up that spring. In 62 league appearances, he has scored only once - this year against Strasbourg. Check out his stats here.
So here’s my question. Who do you guys think should be our starting right back? Of course the best answer would be that we should keep both, but I honestly don’t see either of these two guys accepting eternal rotation. Eventually, one of them is going to want status as the unquestionable starter.

His nose does have character. Inara, could you email me on how to use the pole in posts, I want to start integrating that.

You know what did it for me? The look on Clerc’s face when he scored that goal. It got me all maternally activated. Now I want him to succeed.

when dealing with two players who are both good not great, youth always wins out. so i’m voting for clerc

lefutur lol that is a very witty comment… Last year I would have voted for Reveillere hands down. But this year Clerc has been doing very well I think, and he has a lot of progress to come still.
He is also froom Lyon’s youth academy, and I like us to use homemade players… the “other” big european teams can’t show off to much on this matter.Posted from

i didn’t vote. not because i can’t decide but because i won’t choose. with some dishes you need a bordeaux, with others a burgundy.
that said, i’ve always had a certain weakness for RVR. he’s a diabolical imp, always ready with the niggling little foul that escapes description. a ref doesn’t know whether to let it slide because it’s barely a brush, or to or to card it because of the effect its had on play. if i wasn’t an OL fan he’d be the player i’d hate the most.
plus his wife is special k knuts for shoes, one must empathize. my old nickname for my daughter was stalinette (hitlerina doesn’t have the same ring to it) but since she turned 10 1/2 i call her imelda.

I too really like Reveillere, and I honestly think that right now, he’s the better package. I’ve always thought he was underrated in Europe. Granted, he’s not world class, but there are very few right backs who are, and given his experience, I’m surprised he hasn’t been linked with a serious move away. And did you guys see his pretty little ball flick against Ronaldo during the OL-MU game? That made me a laugh. Cahiers du Football were saying how they were glad that Reveillere’s therapy worked out after last year’s OL-Roma game. Though I have to disagree slightly about his fouls - with him, the referees always tend to err on the side of caution and card him frequently in the CL. He’ll be suspended next week, and he was suspended last year too.
Still, Clerc is younger and I think has the potential to be a better player. I’ve always thought him to be a late bloomer like Sagnol, who appeared relatively late on the international scene.
I do agree Guignol that it’s best if you can have both of them, but do you honestly think they’ll put up with this situation much longer? I’ve heard both of them rumble on occasion (though no blowouts) about having to constantly be unsure of their place on the team, and given that all other positions have an automatic starter, I can imagine one them throwing up their hands and saying, “That’s it! I can’t handle the uncertainty anymore!”

Also, I will send you an email later today, Corey.

Hahaha lefutur, that was a great comment. I think guignol is right, which ever fine wine fits your dinner…. then again Pride makes a good point that Clerc is a youth team product which we all can take pride in.
Which brings me to another topic, Loic Abenzoar, 18 year old right back. He is being touted to have a good amount of potential, but he may end up like Mourad Benhamida and Aurlien Badin, Ligue 2 players and thats it. Whats everyone’s take on Abenzoar?
Thanks Inara
