The Fans: Epilogue
By: Inara | September 16th, 2007Now that the league is starting up again, it’s time to end Fan Week. I’ve had a great time learning about you guys, either through interviews or through comments. I used to think I was the only OL fan outside of the Hexagon, but I’m glad I was so emphatically proven wrong.
I hope that many of you also got to know each other as well. Although a handful of the people who read this blog actually post comments, just know that Lyon have fans all over the world, in countries as remote as Fiji and Malta, as far away as South Africa and Chile, and from all over France of course. So thank you to all who participated and took the time to read through the various fan-oriented posts. And a very special thanks to Guignol, Pride of Lyon, Joanna, Dan, and Chris for contributing to Fan Week.

We fans are what make football so beautiful.
I just want to end this with a suggestion. There is, to my knowledge, no supporters group for Lyon fans abroad. Both Marseille and PSG have ones based in New York City (OM Fanclub NYC, PSG New York City Club de Supporters). Lefutur suggested the creation of an OL supporters group based at Nevada Smiths like the OM and PSG ones, or one that is more general purpose (like an online forum for fans to interact). This blog, while good for discussions and sharing information, is limited in terms of fans interacting with one another.
I personally can’t spearhead the creation of an OL supporters group abroad because this blog keeps me busy enough as it is, and also, I’m being paid to find the cure for Ebola. But if someone out there has some spare time and is willing to start up a website, I’d be more than willing to offer input and help, and I’m sure other volunteers can be found as well.
It’s just an idea, mind you, but we can’t let OM and PSG stay ahead of us, can we?

Thanks Inara for all your efforts with this blog.
I have now to complain about those Lyon supporters that complain we have no big names in our team. Yes, those supporters who want to by another striker just for his name. How can they ask that? We have a young striker who scores more goals than he actually has to put his shoes on for games. And soon, Fred is coming back, and I may remind you he had the best ratio goals/time played of L1 last season.
But no, people ask for big names! They just don’t realize we already have those big names. Why do they think we sold 5 players for 15m or more in the last 3 years? (Essien, Diarra, Malouda, Abidal and Tiago).
We have some of the best players in Europe, and it is not because they were not mediatized before coming that they are bad players!
We already have our star players: Toulalan, Bodmer, Cris, Juninho, Kallstrom, Ben Arfa, Benzema, Squillaci… etc.
And when you look at their age (apart from Juninho), they could all play for at least 4 years at their best. It’s simple, we could spend 4 years without buying any players and win “Le championnat” and do well in the Champions League every year. But people only realize how great are our players when a “I’ve got a lot of money to spend” team comes to buy them.
And then it is always the same story: “Oh, Lyon is weaker this season. They sold their best players, their only star”. But everytime there are players behind.I am not saying we have the strongest squad in Europe, but for the money we spend, I only see Porto being as efficient.
Some fans just think football is like in “football manager”, that the best wages makes the best players… it’s sad.
Sorry, I had to say it

Yes, I like “soccer manager” too, but when your team keeps on winning, people have to stop whining!

You know, I have never played a football related video game in my life. Actually, I’ve hardly ever played video games as a kid. So all this FM and FIFA and ProEvo stuff is always so over my head.
Anyway, I agree that OL fans who think the club failed them need to rethink the situation. I’m quite happy with the current manpower. The only think I wish is that our backup gk was a bit better. We have to realize that we aren’t a really big club in the sense that we can afford to have super talents on the bench. Even at Lyon, everyone expects to play. So having a extra deep bench can be as much of a handicap as a boon. If we had gotten Reyes, Heinze, etc, what would happen to those benched? When healthy, I think Lyon have a GREAT squad.

I totally agree with Pride of Lyon.
That fact that last saturday, 2 young players coming from the CFA are the one who drove the team shows that we still have extraordinary capacities… and that Lyon is not dead yet.
We HAVE the big names. They just still aren’t known by supporters and “C1-pot-1″ team’s.Posted from
