Bodmer Receives First NT Call Up!!!!!!!!!

By: Inara | March 20th, 2008

57407.jpgThe sense of justice in this world has prevailed. Mathieu Bodmer, one of the best young French midfielders out there, has finally received what he deserves – a call up to the French National Team.

Knowing that he had to move to a bigger club if he wanted a call up, Bodmer left Lille for Lyon. But due to OL’s defensive crisis (he had to play as a defender for most of the season), he was slow to show the world why he’s so special.

But now he has!!! No one with eyes in their head could have missed Bodmer’s great form in the past couple of weeks. Of course, he’s part of a 39 man squad (one that David Trezeguet once again failed to get into), and he’ll most likely wind up in the A’ team to face Mali (the A team will face England), but at least he’s taken that first crucial step.

The other eight OL players called up to face Mali and England next Wednesday are: Gregory Coupet, Sebastien Squillaci, Francois Clerc, Jean-Alain Boumsong, Jeremy Toulalan, Hatem Ben Arfa, Sidney Govou, and Karim Benzema. Actually, let me put it this way: OL are once again the most heavily represented club, with Domenech having selected all but two of their senior French players, the losers being Anthony Reveillere and Remy Vercoutre. So I guess it really is true that playing for Lyon is like having one foot in the NT.

Domenech has also confirmed that Coupet remains France’s first choice goalkeeper (Mickael Landreau is #2, Sebastien Frey is #3, and Steve Mandanda is #4).

Kader Keita has already been called up by the Ivory Coast for a friendly against Tunisia while Kim Kallstrom will be in the Sweden squad to face Brazil. Fabio Grosso (Italy), Milan Baros (Czech Republic), and Loic Remy (France U21) should also be receiving call ups soon. Fred may or may not be called up for Brazil.

Edit: Remy didn’t get a call up to the U21s, but Sandy Paillot, another OL loanee (he’s at Grenoble) was selected for his first U21 selection!)

This is sooo good for Bodmer – he’s really worked for this (inspite of bearing getting to play his own position). I’m sure he’ll now be a regular on Domenech’s list.

    I’m happy for him too.
I wish he will show to Raymond he can take part of the 23 this summer, but I’m afraid it will be VERY uneasy.

Inara ? Can you tell me WHY the hell did you write all the player in Black, except Jean Alain Boulsong ?
    A Freudian Slip ?

Remy is not in the U21 squad, and I don’t understand why.

    Jo: Fixed!

Salieri: That’s very weird if Remy wasn’t selected. He was taken when he was riding the bench at Lyon and playing in the CFAs, but now that he’s actually starting and playing well, he should be an automatic call up to the U21s.

Ronald here, away from Home and at school

…..anyway, Inara : you made a typo in the story – Bodmer is going with the B TEAM to face Mali, not the A team lol.

also im happy that Bodmer got his first call up, playing for your country is something very special. Also, They should change the name of the French National team from Les blus ( i dont know if i have it correct ) to Olympique Lyonnais, its getting comical how almost every play from our team is in the squad ( maybe they should get Juni out of retirement and make him play also ).

Ronald – Inara is correct when she refers to the French B team which will meet Mali as the A’ team (as opposed to the straight A team). Not sure why but that’s what Domenech calls them – probably to elevate the second team a little? Sadly Juni has already played for Brazil unless then now French nationalised Mr Pernambucano could indeed play for France, that would be cute!

Well, all my early season predictions turned right (Keita, Bodmer, Lyon coming out of their CL group after the first 2 losses).

    Glory me! :D

Evilo, next time, can you please predict Lyon winning the Champions League? Lyon can use all the luck they can get.

Remy didn’t get a call because Rene Girard let all Lens and Paris players prepare their final of the Coupe de la ligue.

    No link with their abilities.

Girard is so different from Domenech, who ardently – and publicly – wishes that none of his players make the French Cup final (basically, he’s hoping Lyon get kicked out of the competition) or even the Champions League.

On this one you can understand. he’ll have to pick players before the finale and if something happens to a Lyon player or something, he would be in a pickle. Even though the only Lyon player aside from Coupet that has a starting spot in the team is Govou.

While were congratulating, let’s also congratulate Romain Dedola, Jeremy Pied, Romain Miguet, Sebastien Faure, Enzo Reale, Clement Grenier, Alexander Lacazette, and Yannis Tafer who were all selected to their respective age national team. The future at Lyon is bright : )
