Coupet Nearing Return
By: Inara | December 9th, 2007Yesterday afternoon, as Lyon were losing at Caen, Gregory Coupet played against Croix de Savoie with the Lyon CFAs (reserve squad). For Coupet, this was the first time in 15 years since he’s played in a reserve match, but it’s been exactly four months and a week since his last game (Trophee des Champions against Sochaux). Around 600 people, including his family, Sonny Anderson, Bernard Lacombe, Remi Garde, Pierre Laigle, and other Lyon regulars, came to cheer him on.

Coupet is looking good.
Reports say he did well. Though Lyon lost 1-0, Coupet was called into action many other times and looked like he is nearing match fitness. It also turns out that Coupet had been unsure about whether he was ready for the CFAs but was apparently ordered to play this match anyway. That’s a good sign because many players who come back from injury live in a perpetual state of fear in case of re-injury (like Louis Saha). Rehabilitation is a mental process as much as a physical one, and for a 34 year old player, it’s important that he realize there’s nothing to be afraid of.
Coupet admits he’s not 100% and doesn’t know yet whether he’ll travel to Glasgow as backup to Remy Vercoutre (Coupet manning the nets is out of the question despite all of us wishing otherwise). If you’re interested, Lyon have been posting weekly “Gregory Coupet Episodes” with photo albums which have been charting his progress since his return to training.
But if you ask Karim Benzema, Coupet should come along on this “perilous journey” anyway in order to provide encouragement. Because Lyon will really need it.

now if only Cris would come back soon. We can last a while longer with Vercoutre between the posts, but our CBs are playing god awful now.

I’ve just seen a local paper headline saying that Coupet will not be going to Glasgow but don’t know if its offical (there’s nothing on the website)
Japple - last we heard Cris was hoping to be back late Jan (thats about two weeks ahead of the original six month prediction)Posted from

That’s official now, Coupet won’t be in the group to Ibrox.

And neither will Fred or Fabio Santos.
I was hoping Fabio Santos would be available. A midfield with him, Toulalan, and Juninho would have been best.

What are your score predictions for Ibrox lads?
Should be a good game, I think maybe Lyon have the edge, but we are strong at home, the injury to Darcheville was a blow, but you have injuries of your own as well.Rangers fan.

I’ll be posting a Rangers-Lyon match preview later tonight and would love to see your comments.

Darcheville is a joke. When he was on Bordeaux I asked myself why the fuck anyone would want him. He has no skills whatsoever, he likes to just run straight into the defense and shoot the ball directly to the goalkeeper.

I have to agree about Darcheville. Obviously, Walter Smith knows a little something I don’t, but I’ve never really rated Darcheville. When he’s not offside, he’s wasting good balls in. I’m a big fan of Nacho Novo, not only because he has the best name in professional sport, but he’s more talented and more creative.

Darcehville is pretty lacking, but he did have a high scoring year in 01 or 02. His presence wont be a big loss though. Novo and Cousin would be a handful, but I doubt both will play, Cousin will handle the long balls Rangers pump to him, Novo will probably be a late sub.

Corey, I normally agree with you on player assessments, but Cousin is a joke. I remember him at Lens and remember thinking that this guy is going to end up in Qatar one day.

Cousin IS a joke, but his abilities are suited to Rangers playing style. He will bring down longballs and he can usually get his head on to crosses and freekicks, and thats all he has to do. His miss against Barca at Ibrox sums up his ability, he is crap. I guess I didnt make that clear, but then again, whens the last time there was a player from Gabon in the CL?
