Florent Malouda is NOT Impressed by Chelsea

By: Inara | December 4th, 2007

Ever since straining his knee ligaments a few weeks ago against Schalke, Florent Malouda has had a lot of time on his hands to do something footballers are normally not encouraged to do – think.

He’s technically a Chelsea player, but the reason he’s unhappy is that he’s been spoiled by the way Lyon take care of their players, which is why I’m gleefully posting this. And no, I’m not going to wag my finger and say, “I told you so, Flo.”

So what has Malouda’s knickers in a twist? Well, a lot of things actually. First of all, he was annoyed with the fact that Chelsea didn’t send a plane to pick him up after the France game against Lithuania. In fact, they never pick him up after international games. But Arsenal send a private plane for their players. That’s not fair, right?

And then you have Lyon, who not only send a plane but also send a member of their staff to personally accompany players back (which I think is to prevent them from getting drunk and having sex with prostitutes in those post-match shenanigans).

But Chelsea apparently left all the travel plans to Malouda, which he did not appreciate. Getting from Nantes to London is actually quite complicated, and footballers are not paid to think, you know.

Even more shocking is the way Chelsea conduct themselves at training.

“Training sessions here are terrifying. They are just like matches, and you go flat out. During the actual games it is as though everybody’s brains are switched off. People play by instinct, spontaneously, in the way they did when they first discovered football.”

So basically he’s saying that his teammates are stupid. I think anyone could have told him that.

Malouda also doesn’t like the way the club handles a player’s nutrition. And when I say “handle” I mean not doing anything at all. He was stunned that Chelsea don’t regulate the diet of their players and was shocked at what his teammates eat – they even drink coke! ZOMG!!111!!1

But he of course is grateful that at 27, he’s used to following his Lyon diet. Also added to his unhappiness is that it took him forever to get a phone line installed – he still doesn’t have cable TV! But at Lyon, it only took him a day to get everything installed. Traffic in London is also very bad, and sometimes he has to take the subway to training! And then to make everything worse, Chelsea didn’t even help him find an apartment or house, whereas Lyon provide accommodation.

Okay, I have to say it. I TOLD YOU SO!

Just take a break from the whining and admit it, Flo. You miss OL. You miss the team. You miss Juninho. You miss the love you got from the club and the fans. You even miss me blogging about you. But whatever. I’m sure that £50,000 per week salary is going a long way in helping you get over Lyon.

On a serious note though, there is something to be said about personal happiness in a city, and no matter what someone says about the club, it can’t be denied that Lyon’s a great place to live. Many of the players at OL, especially the older, married ones, love to city too much to leave. Hence Cris, Gregory Coupet, and Juninho being content to not just end their careers at Lyon but live here afterwards as well. It’s why Eric Abidal wants to return to Lyon after he’s done with his Barcelona stint. And not only that, but many former players come back to live in the city as well. Granted the sporting challenge might be greater at Chelsea, but at the end of the day, if you aren’t happy in a place, then you’ll never settle.

And I’m sure Chelsea is NOT impressed by the overrated Malouda.

I can’t believe he’s whining like a little girl about such details (plan, diet????).
Maybe Chelsea just thinks he’s a grownup that can take care of his plane tickets and own diet.

    Just… lol.

Malouda proved to be a bitch when he wanted to leave Lyon, pretending that “his family suffered from the situation”.
You get what you deserve, Florent.
And even though you brought a lot to us, we do not miss you. Hatem is a beast!

It’s amazing how players get pampered these days. Sure Manchester United players have to share hotel rooms! Malouda should stop whining, he’s making obscene money to do something he loves.

I read the interview last week and it really didn’t seem like much of a big deal. He was saying how Chelsea forced him to toughen up a bit and that he changed status when he arrived at Chelsea. The brainless part is true. He said Essien told him the guys are basicaly going all out at all times which is why they can heart themselves during training sessions.
And he was explaining how Arsenal’s plane was full and he had to take a cab with Thuram to Paris and wait a few hours until the Airport opened. The only other option he was given was to take a helicopter from nantes to London. He didn’t want to.
That France Football had three profiles of ex-Lyon players (Abidal, malouda and Cacapa) and all of them except Abidal seemed to miss being the superstars of their clubs. Abidal is the one who adapted the best to his new club. They reported that Rijkaard’s son was wearing his jersey as well as Puyol’s family. They’re loving him down there. Cacapa is the classiest one of them all refusing to badmouth a single OL person even though you felt they did him dirty.

I read this just an hour ago. I think what shocks me most is that he would make those sorts of comments whilst he’s STILL at Chelsea. It’s one thing to bitch after you’ve left but whilst you’re still there (and are still the new boy on the block) is just plain stupid. How on earth can he expect his team mates and new bosses to warm to him when he just insults them? Also where Chelsea train is not in London at all but a VERY nice, rich small town in rural Surrey called Cobham that most players adore (and most English can not afford to live!). Not quite the beautiful village outside Lyon where Malouda lived but very nice never the less.

Having said that I really can’t believe Chelsea didn’t provide help in finding accomodation (and I mean that in support of Chelsea). Its absolutely standard practise for a company that relocates an employee from even just middle management to provide help with finding accomdation, let alone a key player like Malouda.

I do sympathise with him re diet however. I’ve heard this before about English football players diets and am amazed that the diet is ignored for top rank sportsmen. Nutrition is vital to our bodies performing at their optimal level so it seems strange to me that you would invest so much money into a player; pay so much attention to his physical training and yet completely ignore wh

completely ignore what they eat (was the rest of the sentence…)
It strikes me the things Lyon do are just sensible but not in any way excessive.
At least he doesn’t moan about doing his laundry!

Once again, I think the interview was not him complaining and bitching, he was just saying how he knew he was not the star of the team anymore and he was fine with it.
Ang giving examples of hislife in London. It’s too long for me to quote and translate but the tone of the interview was a lot less belligerant than these transcripts would have you believe.

Then the translation is unfortunate for him. Its been reported in the English press exactly as Inara has quoted and with no wider context or reference to the full article you quote. The English press are absolute bitch for this type of thing. Too bad for him as this is where he lives and the article his team mates and fans will read. Really too bad as the original sounds an interesting subject.
And I bet Malouda won’t dare let himself be seen drinking a Coke now!

We all know Lyon is a family type environment, and some of the perks they have you will not find elsewhere in Europe. It does not surprise me that Chelsea doesnt do these things for its players, its not that the players expect pampering, its more that if club teams are to complain about their players being fatigued after internationals, then their club should ensure they get as much rest as possible, which means sending a plane with a staff member on it to take care of their travels. Because we all know flying around Europe is sometimes complex, and most of the fatigue and stress from international matches stems from the travel. As for the diet, thats just unprofessional by Chelsea, but as Florent hints at, it appears Chelsea does not care that much about their players, which I think stems from the fact that Big Roman thinks he can buy who ever he wants. One of the fundamental tennants of management is to make the worker feel valued, and that is not just buy paying him/her alot of money. Lyon does that with its players, other European clubs, probably not. My own team Real Madrid is extremely guilty of this, its just an old way of doing things.

It’s so funny that, no matter where people move, they have the same problems: NO FUCKING PHONE! NO FUCKING CABLE! Turns out it happens in Italy, England, Portugal … God, even France, if one can imagine such a thing.

Malouda is certainly not alone in being shocked by the intensity of play in English training sesssions, either. Everyone has to make adjustments when they change leagues, Florent, even if they’re coming from OL. For god’s sake, you’re 27 years old!

You know, the minute I read the articles, I was sure it had been skewed in some ways by the English press. I mean, they can turn “I am committed to Lyon for now” into “I hate my club and want to leave right now!” Still, it was too good to pass up. Massaer, where did you see his original interview? I’ve been looking for the French one and can’t find it – just the English ones.

Malouda has denied the English versions, and I believe him, but I do think he’s unhappy in London. London is a great city, but I don’t think he expected to miss Lyon. None of the players who leave ever do – they always assume that everything is so much better at Barca/Juventus/Madrid/Chelsea. He’ll eventually adjust, he’s a professional, but he might be regretting some of his declarations in the press this summer.

It’s in last tuesday’s France Football with eric Abidal on the cover with Malouda himself and Cacapa.
I guess I’ll have to scan those at some point. And believe me, he didn’t seem that unhappy with London.
the title was “malouda, Marche à Londres” which is a funny pun on “Marche à l’ombre”. The pun means he’s a hit in London.
The intro goes “Arrivé L’été dernier à Chelsea, l’ancien attaquant de Lyon s’est acclimaté sans problèmes.Il a construit un cocon autour de sa famille, et ne songe qu’à bosser et à découvrir son nouvel environnement.”.
I’m gonna have to scan those articles in a few days.

Not at any of the three Barnes and Nobles I frequent in Boston. I can however get FIFA, World Soccer, Champions, Calcio Football, Soccer USA, 90, and the monthly club magazines of Chelsea and Manchester United. France Football used to be available at this bookseller near Harvard Square, but he stopped carrying it because not enough people bought it.

first of all, you can bet the daily mail overblew his comments unmercifully; that’s a tabloid journalist’s job, the english are better at it than anyone, and the DM is the pinnacle.

the plane back from lithuania is not just a question of personal convenience: Ol, and most big clubs do it because airports and airplanes can be as tiring as matches, as those of you who do much of that sort of thing know.

complaining about london traffic is OK when the DM tears up mayor “red ken livingstone about it, but johnny foreigner better not dare!

as for diet, flo’s not on about soggy chips and mushy peas compared to haute gastronomie, but about but about healthy eating (and healthy NOT drinking…) that’s what got le guen in trouble at rangers, and it may be reason n°1 why france and italy were WC finalists and england is the laughing stock of europe.

lastly, lyon is a great place to live, but barcelona is a marvelous city… i imagine abidal will get used to it, i know i sure could!

btw, malouda was not a bitch about leaving OL, he was standup about it… and his parting words were don’t worry about my replacement, hatem will fill the bill nicely.

as for captain claudio, his permanent residence is still lyon (if you know newcastle…) and his family i believe is still here, we have friends who go to church with them.

Oh English journalism can get much worse than the Daily Mail – holding up the rear is the Daily Mirror, The Sun and the Sunday Sport all of which have a love of gossip (especially the less accurate sort) and sport. Sadly they’ve also got strong circulations. I’m sure these all ran with the story.

I remember reading a little time ago a report on Teddy Sheringham, which was trying to uncover the magic of his ability to play in EP until almost 40 years old. His diet was terrible and he seemed to have no awareness that it might be any different. Amazing.

And yes who would swap Lyon for Newcastle (though the people are very warm and I’m sure will have taken Cacapa and his smile to their hearts)…

Newcastle has a nice stadium with good support like Lyon, but Newcastle as a city, no thank you. I believe it was Ginola’s wife that wept when she was driven through town when she and David first moved there. Its a dull, drab and boring place unfortunately, and the weather is shit. Sounds like Upstate New York where Im from! Anyways, Claudio will probably return to Lyon one day as a coach, so seeing as how he only has 2-3 years with Newcastle, why not keep the family in Lyon.
