Fred Offers a Half-Assed Explanation
By: Inara | September 24th, 2007For a guy that hasn’t played for Lyon in five months, Fred is in the news quite often. I’ve tried to keep all of you up-to-date on his latest shenanigans, from getting himself injured every ten minutes, to leaving for Brazil without permission every fifteen minutes, and for asking for a transfer every half an hour.

Excuses, excuses.
But today, “Fredji” offers us an explanation about his weird behavior of the last six months. In a lengthy interview in the Journal, he sheds light on several subjects. According to him, his argument with the club involved a misunderstanding about French taxes. He thought he was supposed to receive a certain amount and was convinced the club was lying to him when he realized that he was missing a couple million euros.
I personally don’t understand why he didn’t just call the club’s administrator, but according to Fred, he and Aulas will be meeting to work out the tax confusion. He admits that he was in error - though so was Lyon, apparently. Maybe Fred should get TurboTax instead of trying to do it by himself.
Fred also talked about the Chivu incident and his suspension from UEFA (you’re gonna love this, Chris).
[The suspension] was deserved because I was in error. I was very unhappy to have done that, and I felt really bad about it. I had put myself under a lot of pressure for that match. I didn’t want to lose it, I wanted to score. I lost my head. I called Mancini to get Chivu’s number. The language barrier was complicated, but I transmitted the message to him: “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” I have to learn that in football, I can’t always win.
His reasons for leaving Lyon last May? He wanted to celebrate the title with everyone else, but it was more important to him to be treated by the Seleçao medical staff to be ready for Copa America.
He also contradicted the gossip about his fractured relationship with Sylvain Wiltord. According to Fred, he laughs at the Nino rumors because they are untrue. He and Wiltord had a good relationship on and off the pitch. In fact, Fred adores Wiltord, who is a humble man and a professional athlete, an important part of Lyon.
I don’t quite believe Fred, but who really knows anyway?

He returned to Lyon - just in time for the team picture.
About the team, he thinks Lyon’s current form is normal, given that it’s early in the season. But if the players can establish team interplay, the team will get stronger in time.
Fred hopes to play a little against Bordeaux on October 7th and then to “explode” after the international week that follows.
He ended the interview by assessing his first two years at Lyon (don’t forget that he participated in the World Cup in between).
I didn’t give my best. I had a good first year, but the second year started badly. I was injured and was very distracted. You don’t know the real Fred but you will be able to see him soon. I like the football, the Gerland, and the supporters. My future is in Lyon.
My thoughts on this: he’s getting nervous seeing Karim Benzema’s recent form. He’s probably also concerned by the slow start Lyon have made this season and wants to help (deep down inside, he’s a good kid…good but a kid). I’m sure the recent Mancini-Fred exchange rumors aren’t helping either. I think his wish to play against Bordeaux may be a bit premature, as he shouldn’t push his body unless it’s fully healed.
Still, I would welcome Fred back onto the squad. At this point, I don’t really care why he acted so immaturely as long as he stops and starts playing like the 15 million euro striker he’s supposed to be. Lyon have only two healthy strikers right now (Benzema and Milan Baros), and with our inability to lure in a big striker, Fred will have to do.

… I actually think Fred is one of the best strikers in the world… I rate him way over than Benzema for goal scoring (I must be the only one, I know).
BUT, he is really unreliable off the pitch. If Benzema can stay away from injuries and Fred keep his head down, I think we could have the best pair of strikers in (I say it…) Europe.
I really would like to see a line up with Ben Arfa playing just behind those two…
I always get too enthusiastic, sorry!

I was a complete idiot at his age, (and I didn’t have gazillions of Euros to spare) so I’m willing to cut the boy some slack if he turns it around. Assuming he wasn’t put up to the interview entirely by a PR person, at least he seems to be trying to make amends. I do think you’re right about the Benzema situation, though.
(And no offense to people like Inara, who are much more mature at a young age than I ever was.)

Well, I’m Fred’s age right now (23), so I have done my share of stupid things, and I’m sure I’ll continue to do so for a while yet. So I’m ready to turn a blind eye as long as he pays us back in terms of goals. I don’t want him to become Adriano v. 2.

Best pair in Europe…
Not sooo sure myself… But I do rate both players!

lol when was the last time that lyon were at the bottom of the group table even after day 1? get used to it. you guys are used to winning the group even with bayern, mu, and real madrid in it.
this time it will be different though because scotland will again expose french football for the shite that it is.

Damn, how disappointing. I was hoping to hear,
“I was glad I did it and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.”

Yeah, I’m with Chris. That elbow-to-the-nose thing was the most refreshingly real aspect of play that day.

Yey Morag!!
Way to go guy!Now go and take your 4th grade comprehension test.

well, i just don’t see an outstanding attacking pair in europe playing 4-4-2. Even Barcelona plays a bit differently, so we can’t talk about a real pair up front…
I just think they are really great players. Look at Fred’s stats (I mean on the pitch, not off), and it is really impressive.Posted from

He wanted to elbow Chivu, who doesnt want to throw a bow at Chivu? Even Moratti wants to beat his ass.
Fred returning would help out this non-sense of a formation that Perrin prefers. Why Ben Arfa didnt start against Lille is beyond me? He certainly did well enough with Benz against Metz but since then has been frozen out. Perrin has lost all of my support, he probably wont last past the winter break if he continues like this, he is putting out a shitty and worse, unmotivated team.

Morag: Relax. No one’s insulting Scottish football here just yet. Wait until next week.
Laurie, Chris: I’m pretty sure Fred was being PC. His entire interview has me wondering who wrote it up for him.
Evilo: Just when I needed a knight in shining armor!
pride of lyon: I see what you mean about two attack combinations. There aren’t any jaw dropping ones in Europe at the moment. If Valencia use a two striker attack (Morientes and Villa), then maybe. Rooney and Tevez suck together. We’ll see on Fred and Benzema though. I don’t think the two have ever played together as two up front strikers. More like Benzema being deployed as a winger to support Fred. But Benzema and Fred with Ben Arfa behind them? It makes me grin just thinking about it.
Corey: I’m not ready to throw in the Perrin towel just yet. He’s so busy trying not to be Houllier that he is forgetting to be the coach he is capable of being. Believe or not, Perrin is actually a good tactician. Not a Spalletti or Benitez by any stretch, but he’s still good. The Barca debacle makes me wonder why he went from keeping it simple to making it too complicated.

For attacking duo, take a look at Inter’s roster and when Eto’o comes back, take a look at Barca’s.
Ruud and Raul play well together as well.
Drogba and Sheva created a lot of danger last year.Posted from

I had forgotten about Inter. I’m a closet Zlatan fan, and Crespo isn’t too be forgotten either. As for the Henry and Eto’o thing, I haven’t seen them play together yet, so the jury is still out on how effective they’ll be. Drogba and Sheva is another good pair, with Drogba reaping most of the profit, but we’ll see how those too look this year with Chelsea’s management changes. As for Raul and Ruud, I’m not sure. Ruud is a great striker on his own, so I can’t tell if he’s even better playing with Raul behind him or not.

I really hate to admit this, but Trezeguet and Iaquinta have looked very good together for Rubentus. In 4 games Trez has 5g and Iaquinta has 3 in 3, and he’s only started once. They’ve played a 4-4-2 in all but one, with a 4-3-3 in the other. Pretty good candidates.
Outside of Zlatan, it’s hard to argue that Inter has had a striker actually show up for a game yet. But they do have talent upon talent up top.

i agree with Inara. Drogba and Van Nistelrooy are better as lone strikers (IMO) while both Benzema and Fred need someone alongside them to be really efficient.
I really want to see the trio attack Hatem Karim Frederico. And when you look at the average age (21), the progression possibility is incredible (and they are fairly experienced already!)
I think we will soon be a winning machine again, especially if Anderson manages to fit in Cris’ shoes.
Cant wait for Rangers.

If I was fred, I would be very scared of Benz. And you’re right, Inara, that’s probably what’s happen.
I hope this interview is not just a “remember-me-the-first-OL-striker” one.
I’d love to see a line up like
Govou Hatem
Fred Benz
But that will be a problem for Bodmer, Keita and Kallstrom, on the bench.
This team is really like a rubikscube ! That seems impossible, but I’m sure there’s a solution !!Posted from

the solution is to play 4-4-2 with diamond in the midfield with Ben Arfa or Juninho being the top of the diamond.
But to work it relies on a great performance of them… which is a lot of pressure.
the bottom of the diamond filled by toul/santos
the 2 sides by keita/kallstrom/govou.Bodmer can play at any of those 4 positions… Not sure where he’s best.

Hopefully Fred and Benzema will do well together. But Inara - you must be kidding about Shevchenko and Drogba being one of the top strike partnerships in Europe?! On paper yes, but Shevchenko has been dreadful for Chelsea and doesn’t compliment Drogba’s playing style.

It’s true that Sheva wasn’t often on the scoresheet for Chelsea, but he was a great platform for Drogba and took the brunt of the challenges from the defenders. I suppose they aren’t so much a strike pair as a striker+dummy combo.
