Fred Terminates His Lyon Contract
By: Inara | February 26th, 2009Break out the party hats and start celebrating!
Fred, who is currently suntanning in Brazil, has decided never to return to Lyon. He’s terminated his contract and is now free to sign with Fluminense. His decision has been made official by Lyon. This certainly can’t be a surprise to anyone – he hasn’t been selected for the first team since December and has been limited to one or two appearances on Lyon’s CFA team (he apparently cleared out his locker several weeks back).

Fred way back in ancient times.
While I’m mostly happy, I do feel a few pangs of regret. When on form, he was a great striker and scored some truly memorable goals. And at least during his first two years at the club (back when he was mentally stable), he was a happy presence in the locker room and loved by the players and fans alike.
But his recent behavior has exposed the man he’s become, which is a petty, money hungry player making demands that he doesn’t deserve. You can read about his many personality defects here. As for his monetary complaints, I’ll explain further.
As most of you know, Fred backtracked on his word and decided to leave in the winter. Lyon were okay with this because this meant that they could get at least a nominal transfer fee, and it would also give them the opportunity to recruit a new striker. But Fred turned down interest from Roma, Werder Bremen, and Valencia, as well as concrete offers from Stoke City and several Brazilian clubs because he wanted to be in a competitive team in Europe that would also pay him a lot of money. That left Tottenham, but even then, he couldn’t agree on wages with them. Finally Tottenham agreed to negotiate further and set up another meeting…but Fred never showed up! And since that was in the last few days of the transfer window, that it was for a January departure.
Fred still wanted to leave, and with Puel no longer even wanting him around, Lyon agreed to end his contract. But then in early February, Fred’s brother accused Lyon of withholding certain bonuses, which he claimed was the reason for the hold up. I already wrote about that here, but to recap, Lyon pointed out that Fred himself agreed to forgo those bonuses in exchange for giving him to Fluminense without demanding a transfer fee.

Fred in the present.
Having been pushed around for so long by the Brazilian diva, Lyon refused to budge on this matter. Finally, it looked like things had been resolved last weekend, and Lyon agreed to terminate his contract. But then, Fred failed to show up to sign the papers. This really really pissed off Aulas, who also accused Fred of mistreating his own wife (read about his family issues here).
Now, I’m not sure how it works when it comes to contract termination, though I imagine a great deal of it has to do with who is doing the terminating. Each contract has stipulations in them that should a contract be terminated, the disadvantaged party will receive some amount of compensation. It’s why Fred’s termination has been taking so long – Fred wanted to receive compensation despite the fact that it was he who was trying to leave (technically, he wanted his “bonuses”). Now that Fred has terminated his contract so abruptly, he must have decided to give up on that extra money he was hoping for from OL. We’ll just have to wait for further details on what transpired.
What we do know is that we will never see Fred in a Lyon jersey again. Of course this leaves Lyon in a very vulnerable position. They are short of one striker and still have a long and arduous campaign ahead of them. But at least they are free of the ~drama~.
And just to prove that I’m not entirely a hateful person, here is a clip of Fred’s most famous goal at Lyon. I’ll do my best to remember him for that instead of all the crap he’s pulled in the last two years.

@ francis2 please consult wikipedia:

“White is a color, the perception which is evoked by light that stimulates all three types of color sensitive cone cells in the human eye in near equal amount and with high brightness compared to the surroundings.”

This post is totally off topic. Everyone is welcome to post here no matter what color they are (as long as they aren’t green). Let’s go back to talking about football.
dani/francis2/francis/fabmab: Do I need to run an IP check on you? It’s really not necessary to post under different user names. This post is about Fred’s departure, so stay on topic. Drop the insults.

When I see that goal by Fred i just seem to think what might have been, had he progressed at the same pace he did up until he was about 23 he could have been one of the worlds best strikers, and Fred is probably more dangerous patentially than Benzema in form.

whoever you are – please stop posting here. we all know youre a little kid cause you post like one. your insults are ruining the atmosphere for the rest of us who only want to discuss fred’s leaving and the effect on the team. you haven’t said anything constructive or even football related. all youre doing is pissing everyone else off. go spam another blog. the rest of us just want to be left in peace to talk about lyon.
oh and anytime you post on a blog, your ip gets recorded. good luck trying to spread a virus on the offside.
and just for good measure – fred is a piece of crap who will one day get whats coming to him. i hear karma is a bitch.

ok, on topic now –
i think fred leaving is a good thing because i think piquione can still make a positive contribution to the team. plus he wants to be at ol unlike fred. tafer will also get more game time. if puel rests benzema for the rennes match, maybe both of them will play.

Oh wow. A lot of you people who like never post on this blog sound like exactly the same person.

Matthew, you outta know that Karma is a bitch, considering what all lyon has been knocked out of this season, and could be knocked out of in the future because of their ‘getting rid of fred’. Sounds like sour grapes to me baby. Secondly, scroll up, and see my comments about the whole situation. That’s right hun, speak that which you know. Btw, ips can’t be tracked from a variety of things, e.g. A cell phone, sat phone, or various other direct link internet/telcom equip. Read a book. And yes I will miss fred and deeply appreciate all he did for the club, a few trophies, remember those matthew???

Francis: I think Will already posted the link so you can go read about “white” being a color. Second, I don’t know if you know this, but people can actually live outside the country of their origin, which is the case with me, since I’m “American” born and raised. But you seem to have that all-to-typical mentality of not knowing that there is an entire world outside the borders of the US. And I know plenty about race in America since I’m a minority and grew-up with Afro-Americans. And it seems the only book you have opened is probably “Mein Kamph.”

Ronan, I love your list. There are at least 6 strikers who have a bigger relation issue than Ben Arfa and Fred put together. Not sure Lyon needs that. But you are right, I am sure a lot of us secretly love your list of players Lyon should purchase. It is somewhat… refreshing!

we need keirrison the young striker !!! 20 years old
last year he made 42 goals, and this year he already got 12!!

Come on Ronan, Mladen Petric. I’m from Croatia, and he don’t show his real face in HSV. His real face is in national team. He score only 2 goals in period when Eduardo was injured. He can score against Andora ( he score against England, that is great ), but on European Championship, he was invisible. Also Cisse, forget, Senturk, we don’t need Turkish player. Turkish player are ok, but Lyon don’t need them.

Govou-Im surprised you dont think Senturk is good considering he scored a good goal against Croatia in the last second of the game,be honest if Semih was French for example you would love him he is actually a perfect player to be number 2 to Benzema because he scores so many goals from the bench, like last season for god sake when he was a sub for Fenerbahce and top scorer in turkey !Not to mention he is young and scored three goals at Euro 2008,he would actually be a perfect player to come on for ten minutes at the nou camp in Barcelona if we had him,if he came to Lyon he would certainly have an impact,he would probably only cost 8mill euros

Inara: It looks like your dealing with the same problems I have been with my page. One or two idiots that have been inciting the regular posters to get into off topic arguments about what he/she said and whether it is correct or not. I have a feeling that this is not just a coincidence, and am going to talk to Daryl about it.
Also, everyone who regularly posts here for the last 2 years. I have started a Lyon Football Manager blog, so you can follow my exploits here: http://fm5.theoffside.com/. Its been great so far, but I hope some more people stop by to comment on what I am doing. Everyone’s welcome, especially you Ronan, Im sure you have some lists of ‘great strikers’ for me to buy.

KARMA hits lyon. HAHAHAHA! LMAO!!! Had fred stayed, those two goals he scored this past weekend could’ve bailed them out, much like he did in the past. Nonetheless, I wish him all the success in the world. And I’m glad to see puel, alus, and lacombe, getting their’s. But wait, this is just the begining, something that one could clearly see on his face at the recent games, especially, at the auxerre game. Hahahahahahaha. Someone should posr the chorus of culture club’s song ‘karma chameleon’ here. And apply it to the fred haters too.
