How the Injured Fellows Are Doing
By: Inara | September 13th, 2007Lyon have been all about the injuries since even before the season began (we started having our injury crisis during the Peace Cup). Luckily, most of the players suffered minor knocks that had them fit in a week or two, but some were more serious and require a longer lay off.
Gregory Coupet - Torn ligament in his left knee (August 2)
His surgery was successful, and it’s been over a month since he’s started rehabilitation. It’ll still be a while before he can return to practice, but the club can see the light at the end of the tunnel. He’s targeted his return for the match against Rangers in Glasgow, on December 12th. To keep himself busy, Coupet, who openly admits that he’d like to be a rugby player in another life, is enthusiastically throwing himself into the Rugby World Cup, which is taking place all over France, including Lyon.
Fun fact: During the OL - Le Mans match, Coupet and Sonny Anderson got the other OL players to wear warm up shirts that said that Olympique Lyonnais supports France’s national rugby team.
Cris - Torn ligament in his right knee (August 11th)
After his surgery, he and his family have returned to Brazil to spend time with their families as he recovers. The doctors over there (probably at Cruzeiro) will be monitoring his progress. He hasn’t given us a target return date, but don’t expect him back until January at the earliest.
Fun fact: His wife Tatiane actually likes living in Lyon and is a big part of the reason that Cris isn’t wanting a move to a bigger club. QJA thoughtfully translated an interview by her, which you can read in the comments section of this post.

Fredji is back - let’s hope with a new attitude.
Fred - Broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot (June 27th)
It’s been two and a half months since he was injured, and now Fred is well enough to return to light training. He isn’t participating in scrimmages or anything strenuous, just some light jogging and stretching to ease him back to fitness. He still won’t be able to play for several weeks, but Lyon will survive in the league without him, and he’s suspended from the first three Champions League matches anyway.
Fun fact: his hair has gotten big again. It’s getting quite monstrous, actually. Hopefully Lacombe will tell him to get another haircut before he appears in the CL.
Patrick Muller has resumed light training, though the website hasn’t been clear on whether he’s fully healed or not. Hatem Ben Arfa is back in action and will be ready to take on Metz this Saturday. Last weekend, Alain Perrin received a scare when the Czech Republic reported that Milan Baros had picked up a back injury and had to sit out against San Marino, but it turns out it was nothing, so Baros is just fine.

Have you noticed that Lyon get hit by a serious injury crisis every year? Let’s hope that this is the last of bad injuries. Or I don’t think OL can function anymore.

Maybe it’s time to start retooling the medical staff if that’s the case…

You can see Lyon is a good team by the fact that as soon as there is an injury it is an important player… The fact is, there are no “not important” players in the team.
We need Coupet, Fred, Cris, Ben Arfa, Baros and Muller (especially with Cris being injured).
And that is what I like about this team, it is kind of a family where everyone has an important role. I am glad we didn’t buy any more players at the end of this mercato. The number is just right.Posted from

Chris: the hilarious part about all this is that Lyon’s physical trainer, Robert Duverne, is also in charge of the France NT side (he prepared the players for the WC). As for the medical staff…I think Aulas should have used some of his transfer kitty on bringing in some more doctors to compensate for the lines in the waiting room.
Pride of Lyon: I agree, I like how the players are all part of a bigger picture. It means, inevitably, that we are able to survive the losses of our star players because they are not so much different from the others. But I think Coupet is an exception because he is just so much better than Vercoutre.

Inara: I agree that we miss coupet. I am not saying that the players replacing the injured ones are better. I am just saying that whoever gets injured in Lyon will always be considered as an important player.
Even if it had been Vercoutre injured, we would have wanted him to be back quickly in case Coupet got injured. So we never think “Oh, he is injured, so what?”.Posted from

Has anybody ever told you that when you bold our names like that it makes it seem like you’re yelling at us?
I must admit, I’m a little taken aback.

Pride of Lyon: I really like how the players get behind each other. When Ben Arfa was sitting out a few weeks ago, Juni came out and said, “with all respect to Mancini and Reyes, Ben Arfa will be even better. Lyon don’t need another winger.”
CHRIS: I’m one of those annoying people who bold, italicize, and underline everything. Seriously though, it’s a habit from when I respond to really long comments. The bold helps separate my responses to different people.

If only I knew how to bold, underline, and everything, I would do exactly like you do, Inara !

Is that with the html stuff ? [ b ] … [ /b ] and others ?I just try : Qui ne saute pas n’est pas lyonnais

Some good news indeed!
Let’s hope the Metz match won’t injure us more key players, such as Benzema or Toulalan…

Will be good to see Ben Arfa back against Metz.
I thought that when Fred (finally) came back to Lyon this summer, he was supposed to be back playing by mid September?
Its not just us missing Coupet. Look at the goal Landreau conceded in the France v. Scotland match. Domenech must be really hurting without Coupet.
