I Didn’t See This One Coming…
By: Inara | June 11th, 2008
Word on the street is that Sevilla are very interested in Sebastien Squillaci - so interested that they have already made a €5m offer to Lyon and have come to an agreement with the player. Lyon have agreed to the transfer in principle but want more money from Sevilla.
Say WHAT?
How in the world did this come about? I thought Squillaci was happy at Lyon. I thought Lyon was happy with Squillaci. I thought we were this close to being one big happy family. So what’s the deal?
I realize that with the arrival of Jean-Alain Boumsong, Squillaci’s place in the starting lineup looked a bit iffy. But as far as I’m aware, Boumsong is still regarded as the #3 CB, and Squillaci gets most of the important games anyway.
There was also the issue that when Squillaci plays, Cris is forced to on the left side of central defense, which Cris doesn’t like (he prefers the right). But I had thought that issue was resolved. Surely Lyon wouldn’t sell a player over that petty a reason?
Squillaci, for me, is a very solid player who compliments Cris rather well. I like him a lot actually, and I would be sad to see him leave. He had a great season last year and helped keep Lyon’s defenses one of the tightest around (OL had the best defense in the CL group stages). This year he wasn’t that good, but injury crisis, remember? Squillaci played along side of six different CBs this season and in front of two goalkeepers, one who was shaky by nature and the other who was shaky due to injury.
It’s true that Lyon can afford to lose Squillaci since he doesn’t have the same impact as Cris, but with Anthony Reveillere almost sure to leave, Fabio Grosso’s future still up in the air, and with both Patrick Muller and Cleber Anderson on their way out…that’s a LOT of turnover in the defensive sector.
Unless Lyon have a truly amazing player lined up (and they don’t), it might be best if they kept Squillaci.
Thanks to reader John for the heads up.

has anyone else noticed that Barcelona gave Away Dos Santos……..and for cheap. Didnt we ask for him last year, only to get shut down by barca because they claim that he was ” part of Their Future “.

Nicolas: Puel played defensive football at Lille because he had mostly average players (by Lyon standards). At Monaco, when he had the likes of Trezeguet and Guily, he played attacking football.
That to me shows that he’s not set in a certain mindset but is willing to adapt to what he has on hand. Lyon features far more attacking talent than defensive, so I’m sure he’ll have us playing exciting football. I hope, anyway.

Ronald, I’m currently working on a post of Lyon’s top ten big money transfer misses. Dos Santos is on the list.

Puel learned his trade from Wenger, so its obvious he has a very astute tactical mind that prefers free-flowing, attacking football, what we last saw when Le Guen was in charge, who was a contemporary of Puel. Puel’s transfer market activities also are explained by Wenger’s tutilage, as he looks for real rough players to polish, but with Lyon’s finance, he will be looking at alot more expensive players. I like him because he uses youth, but combines that with very experience campaigners, so I wont be surprised if our summer recruitment with him in charge is a few 30 somethings and then a few youth team promotees. Which sounds fine to me.

If Puel is the manager ( im saying if not to jinx anything ) that might be a step in the right direction as far as the team is concerned ( likes youth and experience ) and he could just call Makoun and tell him to come to Lyon with him……..again - if…..i dont wanna jinx it.

According to the Libération website, L’Équipe said this morning that Thuram is teasing Benzema by calling him ‘Ben Arfa’:
“Dans le journal l’Equipe de ce matin, concernant la vie du groupe France, on en apprend une bien bonne: Lilian Thuram, pour mettre les boules à Karim Benzema, le surnomme Ben Arfa. Précision: Ben Arfa et Benzema sont coéquipiers à Lyon et se détestent.”
Do the two Bens really hate each other so much?

i wouldnt call it hate, just a distrust and a genuine dislike for each other. the reason being : they have different personalties. Benzema is a low key, shy, quiet kid who still lives with his parents. While ben arfa is a more active, flashy person with the attitude to match.
That might cause friction most of the time.

I disagree about Ben Arfa. After watching a documentary on him, he seemed like a very grounded and quite young man. I am sure he participates in all the activities that a 21 year old would, much like myself, but his main hobby is watching football with friends at his apartment and reading philosophical books. He does have a more selfish and brash attitude on the football pitch, but this comes from his supreme confidence in his abilities. Perrin tried to break that confidence, hoping he would see a change in his playing attitude, but that does not work, coaches should never do such things. They should try to utilize the best attributes of all players. And while Perrin could not do that, I feel that Puel will be able to get the most out of his player, but not change Hatem’s on-field attitude, as he will not garner more respect then Perrin did. We must keep in mind though that Puel has a player’s psychology background (having been one) so this may help in re-integrating Hatem back into the squad. We can only hope, because his abilities look like they could be helpful to releave the sadly pathetic and useless Malouda on the left flank.

yeah i don’t really get why people think ben arfa is more out there than benzema. both players’ personalities seems to clash off the pitch, but just because benzema is known to be the more quiet and innocent one, doesn’t mean ben arfa is the opposite. ben arfa seems like quite an intelligent and modest guy.

This new Benzema BenArfa hatred makes me laugh. 8 months ago, they were best friends and kept on saying how well they got on on the pitch.
What changed that? For once I don’t think Ben Arfa changed that much in the past year. But Benzema has become over-confident and fairly disrespectful when comparing himself to others.Posted from

Benz didn’t like the wing, maybe that was a subtle way of saying to perrin, PUT BEN ARFA ON

Je pense que le marché n’est pas fini. On se donne les moyens pour aller le plus loin possible en Ligue des champions. On a décidé de doubler tous les postes par des internationaux. Regardez où il y a des manques et vous trouverez à quel poste on souhaite recruter.»
This is a quote of Aulas from L’Equipe.

I haven’t forgotten about this blog. But my internet died in my apartment since Friday, so until I get that fixed, I can’t do much posting.
I am THRILLED About the Makoun signing. He’s a terrific player and totally underrated. I don’t see him as a step back at all.
Also, Puel supposedly wants to pair Benzema with Diego Milito, who Lacombe also likes. I have no idea if that will happen though.

WHAT KIND OF INFORMATIONS DO YOU NEED, Inara, for writing here your new post ??????
