Jozy to Lyon? Say it isn’t so!

By: Inara | January 4th, 2008

jaltidore.jpgA very interesting article appeared in my inbox today. I can’t vouch for the authenticity of the website nor can I confirm the rumor (which basically means it was probably invented by a MLS fan boy with an overactive imagination), but apparently Lyon might be possibly sort of interested in Jozy Altidore, who is the MLS’s next superstar young talent after Freddy Adu.

Umm, as much as I would love to see my countrymen playing in the parts of Europe not called Britain, I have serious doubts about their place anywhere near Lyon. So as fun as the Altidore rumors are, I would rather have Cesar Delgado times 100.

Speaking of Delgado, his transfer has stalled because Lyon still haven’t gotten rid of Fred. I’m guessing Cris still hasn’t received his Portuguese citizenship because Lyon’s four EU spots are currently filled (Fred, Cris, Fabio Santos, and Anderson).

Fred is pretty much gone. He hasn’t showed up for practice yet, and the club aren’t that upset either. In fact, Lyon are doing their best to get rid of him, to the extent that they are willing to part with him for €10m, which is quite a discount from his purchase price from Cruzeiro, which was €15m.

Though Sao Paulo is trying really hard to get Fabio Santos, according to Bernard Lacombe on RMC, our not-so-new secret weapon will be staying.

Loic Remy, who has been subject to several loan offers, has decided to stay at Lyon for the remainder of the season.

After refusing Milan’s €34m offer for Karim Benzema, Lyon have also thumbed their noses at Chelsea’s willingness to put down €40m. Good for you, Jean-mimi. See, Lyon don’t need the money.

Nadir Belhadj is about to be sold to Lens. He wants regular playing time, but since he can’t displace Fabio Grosso at the moment, he would rather leave than stay at Lyon. I think this is a very big shame because I like Belhadj and think he’s a great player. But he should be more patient - last year was his first year in the top flight - he can’t just walk into a starting position at a Champions League club. Also, I’m not quite sure how Lyon managed it, but Belhadj was sold for €3.6m, though he was purchased from Sedan for €3.24m. I’m guessing Lyon are trying to make up for the sum they will eventually lose for Fred.

That’s it for now. I’ll have more when I get back to Boston this Sunday. Also, my posting to this blog will be more sporadic this month due to my having taken over the Ghana World Cup blog. With the African Cup of Nations just around the corner (and the fact that I know next to nothing about Ghana), I’ll be doing my best to keep up with both Lyon and the Black Stars.

Benzema scored a great hat-trick… ok it was just Creteil.

As Inara said, I think Perrin wanted to start the year a positive way. we all know all went wrong last year from day 1 of 2007. I also think he wanted to play with Baros in this role to see how he was doing. We have no Keita nor Govou, and I think he wanted to get the 3 B’a to plys together up front to see.
Ben Arfa played like a mad man today. He wasted some balls by trying to do it all by himself, but I don’t mind because he also gave a great ball on the first goal.

As for Fred, it seems he is going to PSG. Even Lacombe said he was about to sign there. I would be glad if it could be the case, it would keep him in france and maybe bring him back right to the top. Brazilians have always done well in Paris, and I don’t see him fail there.

Aulas will definitely bring in a defender, especially since they sold Belhadj.

As for Santos, I don’t think Lyon are selling him, just loaning him to San Paolo. apparently Santos asked that to the Lyon management for personal problems. So if it the case, I would be happy to see Santos loaned and come back after 6 months… but you never know with those loan things.

Yeah, I did some more reading, and it’s what Pride of Lyon said - Fabio Santos will probably be loaned out to Sao Paulo for the rest of the season - he’s having a huge family emergency. It must be something VERY serious (maybe someone was abducted…it is Brazil after all), because Lyon want to help him out, so they will agree to the loan, though that means they now have to recruit another DM since that leaves only Toulalan (who is injured at the moment).

Also, despite the weakness of today’s opposition, Benzema’s hat trick tonight is good for his confidence.

belhadj wanted to start to much to stay, and he’s flexible in the wrong direction: we need an LB who can go to the center (like abidal) instead of playing in midfield. My guess is OL will shell out for a good one this month, one good enough to put grosso on the bench.

fred is a big baby and a bad element to have on your team. if nanar is fed up with him he’s probably history, but i wouldn’t put paid to that yet. baros can’t threaten benzema for the top spot but does play better with him so it’s no like we’re in meltdown.

fabio santos going to sao paolo on loan, that frees up the extra-EC spot. i’m sorry to see him go but apparently he has family issues, so it’s not an “i hate OL” thing. maybe he’ll be back next year, maybe not.

squillaci and toulalan are not out, they were pulled just to take no chances.

govou apparently will be back beginning of february, which is normal for a normal “claquage”, but lucky for these aponevrotic thingies, RVR had one a while back that sidelined him about 3 months.

btw, creteil wasn’t chopped liver, and playing the A side was neither foolish nor cowardly; if they hadn’t had this CdF match OL might have even scheduled an easy friendly to get warmed up for the second half.

finally, about the real subject of this thread, i have 2 questions:

    1) jozy WHO???

    2) freddy WHO???

What about the striker situation-Delgado is more(crap) of a forward/winger type player and seeing as Fred is leaving? We wanted a striker in the summer when we had three strikers, so now dont we need 2. ….. we cant just rely on benzema- its not good enough or fair on him despite how good he is- (also he will be at euro 2008)

Any way, quite franckly Delgado is not at all good enough to replace fred-its obvious fred $16mill-Delgado-$3mill- if Aulas says that delgado is the streight out replacement for fred its a disgrace!

I was having a look at some stats today, preparing for my new France Offside job, and I noticed something interesting. Several of you have repeatedly put down my suggestion of signing Kevin Mirallas, right winger come striker of Lille. His goal scoring rate is not great you say. This may be true, but have a look at this.

    Shots on Goal: 1. 16 Benzema 2. 13 Mirallas 3. 13 Pascal Feinduono

Corey: interesting stats. Still dont know if Lyon would look to acquire Mirallas, but hey if they do, why not include Jean II Makoun as well lol. Would fill 2 of our 4 needs

    Well for
dm-L.diarra- Agood player who is cheap($6mill euros) and available and only 21
ST-Cassano, a very good player and out of favour at real madrid so will surely be available to purchase.
LB-Zaccardo of palermo-may be looking for a bigger club (both yhe 2 italian players can spur on grosso maybe?)
    CB-Anderson polga

As a DM, I agree with Lassana Diarra. I like this player, but he seems to be kind of childish “a-la-Fred”. And he would not stand to be Toulalan’s backup.
I think about Sesseignon or Romaric, who both play at Le Mans. I like these players, they can easily be good DM backup after Toulalan.
What do you think about them ?

Jo, isnt Sesseignon more of outside player then a defensive midfielder? Or he has he had a re-birth in central midfield? If we were going to buy someone from Le Mans it would have to be Mathieu Coutaduer, he is a fantastic player, he is the next Toulalan for me. And a left back, why not buy Jeremy Mathieu before Roma does, this would be quite the signing if we could get him.

Diarra would be okay, but he wouldnt want to be a backup and he wouldnt get much time a la Fabio Santos, which is a shame to see him leave but if he has to family reasons then very well, you do what you have to do. He won me over though, so I applaud him. Hopefully he will be back. And Mirallas, he would be a good player to acquire and mold into a striker, because for Belgium thats where he plays, yeah he starts for Belgium at 19 along with Axel Witsel, Vincent Kompany, Anthony van de Borre, Maroune Felliani and Steven Defour. Now that I think about it, Maroune Felliani would be a great pickup at defensive mid as well, very tall, strong, and a good tackler.

Apparently on OL System, Lacombe said that Diarra was on the top of Lyon’s lists. That seems dumb IMO. He’s cup tied, which is useless to us. He is, as Jo said, just like Fred, and he will demand a starting position. But he’s not better than Toulalan, so he’ll be benched once again. He should go to PSG or something.

I just resd thst lyon want to sign diarra but that they think arsene wenger wont let him go-???????????????????-WOT??????? A. Arsene wenger barely plays diarra except from in cup compititions which he doesnt care about anyway. B. Diarra let a story out in the french press saying he wanted to leave—- Again the fact lyon have said they want him but he kind of isnt available is bullshit! Yet again its the stingy board not willing to pull there weight in transfers-Diarra wouldnt be expensive anyway-about 5mill(english sterling)- and also the lacombe guy is happy not to sign a left back and just play bodmer or kallstom there instead-tite bastards! Dont even talk to me about the swap of fred for delgado because ill probly want to murder Aulas!!

Thanks for the info, Caio! I really like Fabio Santos and am glad that he’ll be coming back.

I know people are abducted everywhere, but it seems that footballer’s families are big targets in Brazil. It’s one of the reasons Cris and his wife don’t want to return there. Though as you said, it happens everywhere. I guess it’s just more publicized in Brazil though.

Ronan: Diarra is cuptied and pretty much useless. If Toulalan gets suspended or injured in the CL, we won’t have anyone. You can’t expect that Toulalan will be available for all European matches.

Plus Lacombe said that Diarra doesn’t want to return to France and will probably stay in England.

The staff gave up the idea of signing L.Diarra.
Other names are being mentioned, like Marc Crosas from Barça.

Nevertheless I would prefer Veloso from Sporting Portugal, since he can play as DM, CB and LB.

apparently Fox Sports En Espanol is confirming that Cesar Delgado is joining. Plus im watching the Cruz Azul game and he isnt mentioned (my spanish listening skills are sub par, even though im ecuadorian ). But HIS reason for joining lyon are funny to me, he’s joining to better his chances to play for the Argentina National Team. He must not be aware of those two guys named Messi and Tevez playing in Europe also.

Veloso would be a good signing, whether he is interested in Lyon after being touted by the bigger boys in Europe remains to be seen. Demichellis I would not be to keen on, he doesnt work in our system of play, he is probably to robust and lacking in mobility. And I would rather we dont have Delgado, I remain unconvinced of his benefits.
