Le Choc: Lyon vs. Bordeaux
By: Inara | March 9th, 2008Is this the match that decides the title? Many people are saying it could be - if Bordeaux win, they would make a very convincing case for being the first team in seven years to destroy Lyon’s hegemony in France.
Bordeaux also have a bit of a psychological edge over Lyon. They abused us pretty badly last year, the affects of which are still being felt. In January of 2007, they were the first team to inflict a home defeat on Lyon in the league. One month later, they defeated Lyon in the Coupe de la Ligue final due to an injury time goal.
Those were rather dark days.

Sunday 9, 2008
Stade de Gerland, Lyon
3:55 PM Eastern Time (21:55 CET, 20:55 GMT)
Match background:
Currently, Bordeaux are only three points adrift of Lyon. This time last season, Lyon were 13 points ahead of second placed Lens, despite a string of winless matches. They have amassed 52 points this season, with 46 goals scored and 26 conceded.
Bordeaux’s record at the Gerland isn’t anything to sneeze at either - in 32 games, they’ve walked away with 11 wins, which is pretty good for 99% of clubs out there. And judging by this year’s indications, Bordeaux have never looked so likely to add to their tally of victories than right now. Plus, they want to smack Lyon for the 3-1 humiliation inflicted on them last October.
Who is the man responsible for a resurgent Bordeaux? Laurent Blanc of course. The managerial virgin has been proving that sometimes, youth and ingenuity can overcome age and wisdom. Unlike last year, when Bordeaux’s football could cause you blindness from sheer boredom, Blanc has Bordeaux playing smart, attractive, and offensive football. This new Bordeaux doesn’t give a shit about anyone.
The most interesting thing about them this season is Blanc’s ability to resurrect careers of players who failed to hack it under different managers and at different clubs. For example, Manchester United reject David Bellion has been knocking in goals left and right, and is the closest player to challenging Karim Benzema for top scorer in L1. Alou Diarra, who spectacularly failed to make an impact at Lyon last season, is marshalling Bordeaux’s organized midfield while also providing a platform for Johan Micoud, who was once considered a potential star of the French National Team.
Wendel, who didn’t seem like much last year, is having one of the best years of his career while Fernando Cavenaghi, who couldn’t even manage ten appearances last year, is now Bordeaux’s biggest threat up front. With eight goals in 14 league appearances, he’s going to want to prove that he can score even against the giants.
As for Lyon…well, a loss would be catastrophic for them in the sense that it would bring team morale pretty low. The last thing we need after being eliminated in the Champions League is another kick in the ass. Blanc was pointing out in his press conference that this year, six teams took three points off Lyon this season (whereas for Bordeaux, it’s only five). However, he was also quick to point out that the only L1 team who won at the Gerland this year was Marseille, in what was a hotly contested match.
Bordeaux and Lyon will be looking for the win, and for the first time in a long time, they want to win for the same reason - to snag that title.
Lyon info:
Besides Patrick Muller and Anderson, both of whom are out with long term knee injuries, Lyon boast an otherwise healthy squad. There are no suspensions either. Perrin was saying how glad he is to have choices in all positions for the first time this season.
Le groupe lyonnais: Coupet, Vercoutre - Reveillère, Clerc, Squillaci, Boumsong, Cris, Grosso - Källström, Toulalan, Bodmer, Crosas - Juninho - Delgado, Ben Arfa, Govou, Keita, Fred, Benzema.
Just look at how many defenders we have! Don’t you just want to weep with joy? However, due to the full complement of players, Anthony Mounier and Romain Beynie were dropped back to the CFAs.
Expected lineup:
Perrin has been talking about squad rotation and fresh players. He also hinted at starting Fred in the center and Karim Benzema on the left (he’ll just love that). Given that Hatem Ben Arfa’s performance in the last few weeks hasn’t been impressive, it’s likely he’ll come on as a sub.
Coupet
Reveillere - Squillaci - Cris - Grosso
Bodmer - Toulalan - Kallstrom
Keita - Fred - Benzema
Since Anthony Reveillere was suspended last Tuesday against Manchester United, I’m assuming he’ll start this match and push Francois Clerc to the bench. Cris is still getting match fit, so he should start as well. I wouldn’t be adverse to giving Sebastien Squillaci a breather, but Jean-Alain Boumsong has never played next to Cris, and you don’t want to experiment in such an important match.
Mathieu Bodmer has been looking good recently and perhaps should have started over Kim Kallstrom last Wednesday. Hopefully, Perrin won’t keep him on the bench this time. Juninho needs rest, so either Kallstrom or Marc Crosas (unlikely in a high stakes match) should start in his place.
Up front, I hope Kader Keita starts. He looked good against United while Sidney Govou looked like he needed rest. Fred seems sure to start as the central striker - the question is whether it will be Benzema next to him or Ben Arfa. Benzema looks most likely at this point.
Viewing options:
Setanta will be broadcasting this match. Also, streaming links can be found here. As always, if you find a good one, I’d appreciate it if you post it in the comments. I’ll do the same.
Expected result:
I’m thinking 2-1. I can see Lyon conceding, but I think the players will want to prove their worth against these upstarts from the coast.

Off topic : Judging by how other teams dealt with the other English sides in the UCL I think Lyon fared really well.
Chelsea 3 : 0 Olympiacos
Arsenal 2 : 0 AC Milan
Liverpool 3 : 0 Inter Milan
Man.United2 : 1 LyonWe were the only team to score, only team who lost by a single goal(despite them having an away goal also) and we hit the post in the dying minutes. Plus Inter and AC would generally be regarded as better teams. This all means nothing now but just to get confidence from the small things we achieved.

@Ush. Not only did we perform better than the other teams but we also arguably had the most difficult opposition who are on top of their game right now. Bring on next season!

Yeah I can’t wait. I mean, we still don’t know our best formation or lineup THIS season in my opinion. We’ll have Ederson aswell. I can’t help but think would Bodmer have made the difference against United, his 2nd goal against Bordeux was class!

Yeah… that’s why I say I’m pretty happy since this game.
When my friends tell me “What did you think about OL kicking out of the CL ?”, they’re all surprise by my answer… but you Ush just explained very well why I’m not sad !That’s football

Funny aswell, one of my mates whos a typical united supporter and wrote off lyon before he could name 3 of there players said as much shit as he gave me, they were a quality team. I hate the ignorance in Ireland and England of football on the continent, and all english sides going through in the UCL is just gonna perpetuate it.

Their ignorance is more stupid considering that pratically all their good players come from… the continent.
The would better take a look here.Posted from

We’ll have Ederson, have sorted out a Grosso replacement and hopefully Ben Arfa will have learnt to pass. It will be dynamite!
The ignorance is frustrating especially when you factor in the superior financial powers of the English teams. Still we’ll make them notice us when we lift the CL cup:)Posted from

do you guys believe kallstrom is gone this summer? if so i like the midfield of bodmer toulalan and ederson when juninho retires. I think those three could be a force not only in france but in europe

Ian yes I think KK will leave at the end of the season. I think we will increasingly see Bodmer starting over KK, which won’t be acceptable to Kallstrom so he’s likely to seek a transfer. It’s a shame because he has offered a lot, but for the long term I think Bodmer offers more (especially now he’s being able to play in position).

I would like to see that midfield as soon as possible. Sorry to Juni, he started the season really well but has made less and less impact in recent games. Particularly against Man U when we needed lots of energy he was looking sluggish. If Keita works on his final ball in he could be very very useful, and less hassle than trying to appease Ben Arfa who is extremely frustrating lately.
Kallstrom is a strange one, he’s sorta dependable but never truly oustanding, but often gets important goals. An excellent squad player which if he’s not content to be, he will leave and Bodmer for me just looks more complete.

I say we drop Kallstrom, pick up a young midfielder who is flexible. I’m still not sold on Crosas, but that’s because I didn’t see him play much. Plus his release clause is 50 million. And he’s too small, but so is Xavi, so I guess height isn’t everything.
I’d like Fabio Santos to return but it’s looking less and less likely. Are Lyon still interested in Felleini (sp?)? The club was pretty into him two summers ago, and I remember we renewed out interested last January,
We need a left back too. I like Grosso and think Lyon shouldn’t give up on him, but we still need a backup for that position.
And Lloris for gk? Right on.

Am I the only one not to have access to the Olweb.fr website since the match?

“I’d like Fabio Santos to return but it’s looking less and less likely”
Why do you think that, Matthew ? I don’t think so, and I don’t HOPE so.“Ian yes I think KK will leave at the end of the season. I think we will increasingly see Bodmer starting over KK, which won’t be acceptable to Kallstrom so he’s likely to seek a transfer”
You’re right, Storm. That’s exactly what I think.Posted from

I’m fairly happy with the midfield, particuarlarly what should be the starting midfield of Bodmer,Ederson and Toulalan. Fabio Santos and Crosas will be good backups. Is everyone happy with the Govou, Benz, Ben Arfa trio?? Specially since Keita seems to be playing well, gotta give Delgado a run out or two at some stage aswell. And where does that leave Fred also? 4-4-2 or the ol 4-3-3?
I’m bored and want some debate!

All the big teams have strength in numbers, so Lyon will need to have some excellent players sitting on the bench the next few seasons, but they will be used. Keita should get a chance over Govou, he has looked good. Delgado hasnt seen much of a chance either, I wonder if he will. Mounier should get a chance in place of Ben Arfa if Perrin thinks Hatem’s lack of passing is so dreadful, stop playing Benzema on the left! Also, for Fred to play then rest Benzema, he has played alot so far at 19.

Keitas naturally on the right so rotate him and Govou perhaps, and Ben Arfa and Delgado on the left. What Ben Arfa needs is a kick up the ass and some competition for his spot. Skilfull as he is, I would not be worried if he was sold, I wasn’t when Malouda was and look how Malouda has ended up, pissed off on the bench at a “bigger” club.

i agree with you Ush, people that have left Lyon have gone on to crappy clubs. Thats right Corey, i said CRAPPY CLUBS lol, Sue me.
……also, Is Cesar Delgado Alive, i haven’t seen him since that game that happened a while back ( thats how you know my memory is bad, i cant tell you which game it was ).

I’m so sorry not to have posted in the last couple of days, but things have been crazy. Ush, I’ve been having the same questions about tactics, and I’ll have a post up tomorrow so we can all discuss it.
Isn’t it so great that Lyon will have choices instead of forced line ups?

I’m sorry, that’s not the subject but… i wanted to share this funny thing with you !
That’s about the possible new name of OL Land.http://tr.voila.fr/traduction_voila2.php
If you click on the tag “OL Land / New Stadium” on your right, and read my comment on the first article, you’ll see that’s what I predicted too !
I should have bet it with bookmakers ! Grrr !

Oh I’m sorry. The Yahoo translation didn’t work.
Here is the link in French : http://www.acteursdusport.fr/PAR_TPL_IDENTIFIANT/11707/TPL_CODE/TPL_LDC_ACTU_FICHE/PAG_TITLE/Le+futur+stade+de+Lyon+d%E9nomm%E9+%22+LG+Stadium+%22+%3F/587-rechercher.htmPosted from

I remember when you predicted LG Stadium, Jo. Seriously, you should get on that bet. You still have time!
About the name itself…well, I’m not too partial to it, though anything is better than Ticket Restaurant Stadium (which is a very big fear!). I wonder when Aulas will announce the name? Surely he’s decided by now.

Gosh ! JMA reads this blog and take our ideas !
Hi Jean Mimi !!! Thanks for Karim’s extended contract!
You’re right Inara, I won’t support something like Ticket Restos Stadium.
I think the LG’s idea is a good alternative.
That’s kind of “passe partout”.
We’ll see. But I think as you do, Inara : JMA already knows what the OL Land name will be.
Something strange : If you google LG stadium Lyon, you’ll see that appears very often in French links…
Is that a clue ?Posted from
France

Well, LG has been a sponsor of Lyon for several years now, and since it’s a Korean company, Aulas may see that as an inroad into Asian markets. So I guess LG makes sense in a way - but do you think they’d be willing to pay 150m+ for the naming rights? Are they a very rich company?
Looking at our current sponsors, Novotel, Renault, and Audi are the only other ones that look capable of paying that sum.
