Lyon: Hospital Ward Edition
By: Inara | October 30th, 2008Just who isn’t injured? Of the ten players out, seven of them are starting players. Defensively, Lyon are once again in a crisis. They are down to their last men in terms of defense. Besides academy kids, Lyon have no backups at all. If anything happens to the players that are left, Lyon will be screwed. Just SCREWED.

This is where the players hang out when they aren’t on the pitch.
Francois Clerc: He tore the knee ligament in his right knee. He has been out injured since the first week of August, when he was pulled out of the opening fixture against Toulouse.
Expected return: January or February.Sidney Govou: He severely sprained his right ankle. He’s been out since the end of September when he was taken off the pitch against Bayern. He’s started light training.
Expected return: late November or early December.Mathieu Bodmer: He pulled an adductor muscle. He’s been out since before the Lille game when he got injured in training. He has resumed light training.
Expected return: mid-November.Fabio Santos: He pulled a calf muscle. He has been out since before the Lille game when he, like Bodmer, also got injured in training. A fractured cheekbone kept him out for the first two months of the season, so he has yet to play this year. However, he’s supposedly recovered and made the bench for the last game (but didn’t play).
Expected return: a few days.John Mensah: He pulled an adductor muscle. He’s been out since the game against Lille when he had to be taken off the pitch. Mensah’s turning out to be very injury prone (he’s only played a handful of games since joining Lyon last July).
Expected return: late November or early December.Juninho: His knee is sore. It’s nothing serious, just something he picked up in training after the game against Auxerre, but OL staff didn’t want to risk him.
Expected return: a few days.Ederson: He has a strained ankle. He picked up a rather serious knock to his ankle in the game against Nancy, but he was able to stay on the pitch for the entire game. He’s resumed training.
Expected return: next week.Hugo Lloris: He has a serious throat infection. He’s had it since before the Steaua game, but played while sick anyway. Unfortunately, the cold Bucharest air made it worse, and he was unable to train the entire week after that game. He was forced to missed both the Auxerre and Sochaux matches, but he has resumed normal training.
Expected return: a few days.Miralem Pjanic: His left fibula is fractured. Yesterday against Sochaux, a very very bad tackle from Stephane Dalmat took Pjanic down. Though Dalmat was expelled from the match for his actions, Pjanic was eventually forced him off the field.
Expected return: late November or early December.Fabio Grosso: He has sore ribs. For a while, it looked like he was suffering a relapse of the cracked ribs he picked up in an Italy World Cup qualifier last September. He was forced off the pitch during the game against Sochaux as a precaution, but club doctors report that his ribs are fine. Thank god.
Expected return: a few days.

Lyon need a new hangout spot, maybe a sushi bar !
…also, about the injuries, i wouldn’t be surprised if one day Aulas barges into the Physios’ office and starting ranting about whats going on…followed by him staring down some people.
At least that what i hope he would do, cause he’s awesome like that lol

Seems like Marseille are pretty serious about Fred.if I was Aulas I would say you give us Taiwo/Cisse and fred is yours

if the situation arose as so, i would just ask for Taiwo and a young defender…no Cisse ( shudders )

I have a great idea for a Lyon board game, I want to pitch it to Aulas one day: We take an anotomical figure of John Mensah, and the object of the game will be to try to guess what part of his body hasn’t been injured during his football career. This guy is literally mad of glass.
Well, at least no body will be complaining about lack of playing time with all these injuries. I feel really bad about Pjanic; really want to see him play. The injury crisis isn’t really that bad. Only five long-term injuries and two of those players- Pjanic and Govou- are kind of expendable. The only thing that hurts is our defensive players out: Clerc, Bodmer, and Mensah.Posted from

Gassama played finally, so he may be playing at right back if Rev covers for Grosso at left back. I say with so many injuries why not use some academy kids, its not like you have better options.

I could survive the other injuries, but when Grosso was subbed out yesterday, my heart literally stopped, and pictures of Kallstrom as LB kept going through my mind (sadly, the other two options for LB, Boumsong and Mensah, would not be able to fill in, not that you’d want them to).

ight as well bring the academy kids up, give them a slight taste of ligue 1 football…then send them down again. lol
but i truly wonder how much reviellere has in the tank, he must be exhausted by now.

Well, Reveillere did want Clerc’s spot and playing time, so be careful what you wish for. Who would have thought Grosso’s defense would be so crucial to this team. Feels like the Twilight Zone. They should try Makoun at LB.

Funny your title Inara, I’ve write on my blog yesterday that we could probably win the Ligue 1 title with our FC Lyon Hospital.
I believe so.Posted from

You’re absolutely right, Jo. If any team can win the title with so many players injured, it’d be Lyon. It’s funny, but I was reading how Le Havre’s coach was saying that Bordeaux was a better team than Lyon, and Melvut Erding saying that Lyon aren’t that impressive anymore, and then I realized that we have never unleashed our full team anywhere, in the league and in Europe. So if we are doing this well with an entire infirmary full of players, I can’t begin to imagine what it would be like if we had a healthy squad that played week in and week out with each other.

It sucks seeing, at least, one injured Lyon-player every game. I wonder, is this normal in all teams? But somehow I feel comfortable knowing they will come back in a better version. Maybe because JMA reminds me so darn much of Dr. Kelso in Scrubs. Allez Lyon!

Haha mrCham, that is true. Injuries have plagued the team for the past two seasons, I dont understand why it is so prevelant.

I want Clerc back now now now!
I think Lloris needs to take better care of himself instead of working hard all the time! Can he not just take medication or will that affect his play?(And if it makes you feel any better, Gourcuff is out for a bit.)
