Lyon vs. PSG, Or: Paul Le Guen Returns Home
By: Inara | March 22nd, 2008Tomorrow, Lyon welcome PSG in what surely will be one of the most intense matches of the year. I don’t know about you guys, but I love with it when these two clubs play against each other, and along with Marseille, they form the three giants of French football. Table standings mean nothing when these teams clash.

Sunday 22, 2008
Stade de Gerland, Lyon
3:55 PM Eastern Time (21:55 CET, 20:55 GMT)
In recent years, when was the last time a match up between these two clubs was boring? Fact is, no matter how crap their playing might be at times, they always raise their game against each other. I’d go so far as to say that PSG comes closet to having Lyon’s number. They always almost beat us, but in the last second, Lyon find a way to either equalize or score the winning goal.
So let’s talk numbers. PSG are in 17th place, just one spot away from the relegation zone. They are above Sochaux due to goal differential, though the rankings might change after today’s games are played. They’ve scored 25 goals and conceded 30, and have managed 7 wins, 11 draws, and 11 losses. Their away record is rather good - they’re ranked fourth. It’s their home record that’s bad, with only 2 wins out of possible 15.
PSG has a talented roster. Their goalkeeper, Mickael Landreau, is #2 keeper on the France NT. Though old, Pauleta still has a deadly scoring touch (and always scores against Lyon). There is a whole host of experienced players such as Jerome Rothen, Sylvain Armand, Jeremy Clement, Mario Yepes, and Amara Diane. There is also a good deal of youth talent, including Mamadou Sakho, David Ngog, Granddi Ngoyi, Loris Arnaud, and Younousse Sankhare. Expect to see them play for Les Bleus one day.
Playing against PSG has special significance for Lyon fans. First of all, it’s littered with former OL players. Jeremy Clement is a graduate of Lyon’s academy and was a classmate of Francois Clerc. Additionally, Pierre-Alain Frau and Peguy Luyindula, Sidney Govou’s BFF, are also former players. On the Lyon side of things, we don’t have any former PSG players in our ranks, though it’s not from a lack of trying. Over the years, we tried to sign several of them, and all without success. In order to keep them, PSG had to increase their salaries. By a lot.
Two other people are familiar faces to the Gerland faithful. The assistant coach of PSG, Yves Colleu, who was at Lyon from 2002 to 2005, who served and continues to serve…Paul Le Guen. He was at Lyon for three years and led them to unprecedented success. He not only won three titles with Lyon but also led them to two consecutive quarterfinal appearances in the Champions League. He’s the man who purchased Cris, Anthony Reveillere, and Sylvain Wiltord to name a few, and he was behind the promotions of not just Clement and Clerc, but also Karim Benzema, and Hatem Ben Arfa.
A very popular manager among the players, to this day, he’s preferred to the men who replaced him. It’s his tactics and attacking philosophy that Lyon maintain to this day. No one wanted him to leave (except maybe Bernard Lacombe), so Le Guen stepping down in 2005 was a shock to everyone.
And though his stint at Rangers failed (I have my theories on that), and his time at PSG is difficult (it’s Parisian poison…even someone like Wenger would struggle there), I still think he’s one of the great hopes of French coaching.
Sometimes I think that it’d be great to have him back at Lyon. His leaving was like a bad divorce - neither party can get on with their lives without each other. At Lyon, the circumstances were right for him. With the burden of recruitment lifted off his shoulders (something he’s poor at), all he had to do was lead his players and plan his tactics, which he excelled at.
But Le Guen never really loved Lyon, and Aulas can’t trust a manager who walked out on him. Still, dreams are free.
Tomorrow is the first time that Le Guen is returning to the Stade de Gerland (in an official capacity) since he stepped down in May 2005. The last time PSG played at Lyon, Guy Lacombe (now at Rennes) was their coach.
Anwyay, I’m not quite sure why PSG is doing so poorly this year. They have a talented squad, lots of money, an exceptional manager, and a supportive president (who puts up with a lot of shit). So what’s going on? Part of me wants to blame their fans, who have to be among the most unreasonable in all of Europe. PSG players regularly get death threats/attacked/robbed. There is also the stigma of hooliganism at the Parc de Princes (remember the shooting last year?). Honestly, can you blame PSG for being afraid of their own fans?
PSG will come out fighting for the three points, and I think they will be extra motivated to prove to everyone that they can hold their own against the champions. However, they will have to do so without two of their strikers - both Pauleta and Luyindula are out injured. As for Lyon, well, the three points would be nice, though part of me wouldn’t be too upset to see PSG take them. They need them more than we do.
Edit: Wow. I can’t believe I wrote that. Of course I don’t want Lyon to lose…but I don’t want PSG to lose either! They have to stay in the top flight! But as a write this, Valenciennes are beating Bordeaux 3-1, and Marseille are losing to Sochaux 0-1. So now PSG is in the relegation zone. I just want to cry.
Lyon info:
Yay! Everyone one is healthy and accounted for (except for Patrick Muller and Cleber Anderson of course). Juninho has shaken off his thigh niggles while Fred has served his suspension.
Le groupe lyonnais: Coupet, Vercoutre, Grosso, Clerc, Réveillère, Boumsong, Squillaci, Cris, Toulalan, Crosas, Bodmer, Juninho, Källström, Ben Arfa, Govou, Keita, Delgado, Fred, Benzema.
Both Hatem Ben Arfa and Sebastien Squillaci are including in the group, so we know that they haven’t been booted out of the squad despite their shenanigans of last Monday. It’s also important to note that if Jeremy Toulalan picks up a yellow card tomorrow, he’ll miss the game against Marseille in two weeks. So no enthusiastic tackling, Jeremy!
Expected lineup:
I don’t know why I bother with this section. It’s not like Perrin changes stuff around. It’s going to be the same regurgitated, risk free lineup that he always likes to play.
Coupet
Reveillere - Cris - Boumsong - Grosso
Juninho - Toulalan - Kallstrom
Keita - Fred - Benzema
Francois Clerc has been playing a lot recently, and since he’ll be on international duty, I imagine Perrin will give him a rest. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sebastien Squillaci riding the pine if Perrin isn’t done punishing him. Good thing that Cris and Jean-Alain Boumsong play well together. And of course Fabio Grosso will play. It’s not like we have amazing depth at left back.
Juninho hasn’t played for a while, but I think Perrin will start him. Kim Kallstrom had a great game against Sochaux last Tuesday while Mathieu Bodmer looked tired, so we might see Bodmer be benched this time around. Up front, Kader Keita is continuing his good run while Sidney Govou has been so-so. With Govou sure to play a role in the upcoming France-England game, Perrin might decide to rest him. I hope he’ll do the same for Karim Benzema, who looks almost sure to start since Nicolas Anelka isn’t fully fit at the moment. Fred should also start given his good form in the past few weeks.
I doubt Hatem Ben Arfa will even get subbed in, though I hope otherwise. I also expect to see Cesar Delgado get more minutes.
Viewing options:
Setanta and Setanta Broadband will be broadcasting this match. Also, streaming links can be found here. As always, if you find a good one, I’d appreciate it if you post it in the comments. I’ll do the same.
Expected result:
Maybe 1-1? PSG definitely have what it takes to hold back Lyon, even at the Gerland.

I saw that Benzema moment, it was so sad. You could tell he was dejected. I’m hoping it’s nothing and something he can shake off.

3 weeks stop for Benzema. Which means he will miss the French selection, Valenciennes and espacially Marseilles.

INARA STOP MAKING EXPECTED RESULTS BAD FOR LYON.. THERES NO GOOD RESULT THAT YOU EXPECT IN FAVOR OF LYON SINCE NOVMEMBER COMON!

Eljunior, I’m pretty sure you’ll see that if you go back to the 23rd of February or the 15th of February, you’ll find two results where Inara was in one case spot on (2-0 against Metz) and overtly optimistic (1-1 predicted against Le Mans, real result 0-1 defeat)…

SUCH bad news about Benzema. All we can hope is that he makes a quick recovery. I’m not too sad about missing the England game because it’s just a friendly. I’m sure he’d rather be ready for the summer anyway.
Also, I predicted Sochaux correctly too!

In other news, Anthony Reveillere has been called up to replace Sagna in the national team, and Loic Remy has been called up to replace Thierry Henry. Trezeguet has been summoned in place of Benzema.
Counting Remy, that makes OL representation to 11 players!

Very shock to see the Remy call up. Probably will play in the A’ match. He’s probably nervous to be training with so many elite players. Hehe. As much as I dislike ASSE, Gomis is playing very well and Domenech doesn’t even give him a look

It’s all about brand name at the end of the day. I hate to say it but it’s true.
This loan has been so good for Remy. Hopefully Lens can get out of the relegation zone. I’d hate to see him end his season with that hanging over his head.

its not so bad for lyon and benzema as freds form is great at the minute so thats OK, i hope benzema can hit 20 goals this season otherwise thats a big shame for such a promising start

Benzema is out, but Fred is here. He socores about 7 or 8 goals in past few weeks. He will be dangerous man against Valenciennes. I am not worried about that Benzema is injured. We have a lot of good players. Allez Fred

i love how Ronan and ” Sidney Govou”s post mirror each other. Well Fred has the Striker role all to himself at the moment, hopefully he doesn’t fumble it.

Freds in fantastic form again like I knew he could be. He’s ten times the striker Baros is. I sorta think the Benzema injury sorts out a few selection headaches Perrin might have had but I must say, Lyons squad is looking very very healthy with excellent depth and quality. I just wonder how long it will last…

Well lets say that Valenciennes is very strong home team, but Lyon is strong when he must to be strong. On the other word when Lyon plays important games,he is on the level. For example Rangers at Ibrox. Les Gones smash them. Second important game, against Bordeaux. Senstaional preformance by Lyon players, and let’s say that the game against Bordeaux came after knockout form Champions league. And final third game against Monaco. Lyon didn’t win in Monaco eight yeras. Monaco on the other side was very happy with that tradition, but master Keita and Fred kill that tradition and destroy Monaco with three goals 0-3. Now we have games against typical home teams, Valenciennes and Marseille. Well Marseille is in the gruop of Frenchh big team, but their form shows the other side. In the begin of the season Marseille holding, they hard holding, last place. They didn’ score goal in 180 minutes. That was really funy. But they are now in position to fight for places for CL. Let’s hope that Lyon will destroy their dreams. Valenciennes are hard to beat. When they play at home, they play very hard, attacking and aggresive. They chrushed many good teams, like Bordeaux last saturday. Lyon last season played 0-0 in Valenciennes, but Les Gones were a better team, and we can be optimistic abaout game on march 30. because Lyon don’t have just one or two players who can score a goal, they have 6 or 7 players who score goal. Line up : Coupet
Reveillere Cris Squillaci Grosso
Juninho Tuolalan Bodmer
Keita Fred Govou
Kieta is in prefect form, Fred scoring often, Govou is in good form, Bodmer is fantastic man in the middle, about Juni we don’t must talk abaout, and defence looks very good, but we must stop to get a stupid goals. Lyon defence this seasto got a bunch of stupid and naive goals. But after return of Cris, defence looks much better. Result 1-3. Let’s say that I see Lyon will get a goal in own net, but the atomic foward will destroy defence of home team. Allez Lyonnais lets grab that seventh title.

@Sidney Govou: Ako si iz Hrvatske, onda razumeš šta pišem, zar ne?
About Benzema, I don’t think that his injury is a blow whatsoever. We have Fred, Ben Arfa, Keita, Govou, Delgado, and even Mounier competing for the attacking positions, and all of these players can be very lethal up front. With Benzema out, Ben Arfa will probably return to the starting lineup (unless Perrin puts Govou on the left) and Delgado will definitely get some valuable minutes. Of course it isn’t good to lose your best striker at any point of the season, but I honestly think Lyon won’t be hurt much by Benzema’s injury. The whole team is on fire and I can feel that if we keep playing this way the title is already ours!

Yes, sidney govou, “Lyon is strong when he must to be strong”. Like against Manchester, Roma, AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven or Barcelona.

Come on Shazback, Lyon plays hard games in France above his level. Look games against Bordeaux, Lille or Monaco. They win with style. Last season they broke Marseille at Velodrome 4-1. We must belive that Lyon have power to defeat both Valenciennes and Marseille.

Eh? Sidney, I’m not saying that Lyon aren’t good. But to put a game against the Rangers as a “hard” game is a long shot. I mean, they’re the bloody Rangers. They’re a hard game for Rennes, but they should be two wins for Lyon. Home and away. Same thing for Monaco. What? Monaco isn’t a “big” club. last season they finished 9th. And the season before that 10th. Do any champions say that they won a “hard game” against a mid-table club?
Lyon are a schizophrenic club. On one hand, OL wants to be seen as one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and on the other one, they’re refusing the counterparts of being favorites.
For Lyon, the game against Bordeaux was a “big” game, but completely daunted by the far bigger game against Manchester United! Lyon had to perform against Man U, not Bordeaux. Had Lyon lost against Bordeaux and qualified against Man U, would you be dissapointed? No? Then it wasn’t such a big match. (In fact, even without that win, Lyon would still be 1st in the league).
Lyon’s ambition is to go upwards in the CL. But that means that Stuttgart and Rangers need to be beaten. Can you imagine Barcelona finishing second of the group and saying that they had a good season because they “played a good game against the Rangers”?? Can you imagine AC Milan needing a last-game win against Benfica to qualify them and calling it “a fantastic result” when they do win? Truly big european clubs are favorites on all the games they play, save a couple each season against equally big teams. Arsenal are favorites against Portsmouth, but not so much against AC Milan. So when Arsenal batters Portsmouth, it’s not a particularly important event.
Lyon are favorites for the Ligue 1 title. They’ve been favorites since the summer. It’s not changed suddenly. Marseille were seen as strong challengers, but they decomposed. As for Valenciennes, suffice to say that they were 17th last season. And that they didn’t buy any important players.
Honestly… It’s as though Chelsea was to list the high points of their season thus :
- Smashing Rosenborg in Norway 4-0!
- Beating West Ham 4-0 Away! (5 days after losing the Careless Cup)
- Destroying Derby 6-1 in front of the Bridge! (4 days after losing in the FA Cup quarter-finals to Barnsley)
- Beating Fulham 2-1!It’s just… Wrong. The high points of Lyon’s season (and low points) were :
- Little low : losing 0-1 to Toulouse with a harsh red card for Källström
- Little high : destroying Metz 5-1 confirming Benzema as a great striker
- Little low : losing 3-0 to Barcelona
- Very big low : losing 3-0 to Rangers
- Medium high : winning 3-1 against Bordeaux
- Medium high : a good 2-2 draw against Barcelona
- Litlle low : knocked out of the Coupe de la Ligue by Le Mans (0-1)
- Little low : 0-3 defeat against Lens in a non-match
- Medium high : 1-1 draw against Man U
- Medium low : 0-1 defeat by Man U, knocked out of the CL
- Medium high : 4-2 win against BordeauxAnd that’s it. Bordeaux are moderate because they’re title rivals, and Marseille are at best a little high or low because of their poor showing this season. Monaco, Valenciennes… They’re not even a blip on the radar. But that’s the counterpart of being a “big” club. You’re not moved by a win against the 16th in the League anymore. It’s just normal.

Sidney Govou, I have asked you something. Could you answer me?

Sorry Nicolas sve razumijem što pišeš, pa od kud si, mislim di živiš? And Shazback, Lyon didn’t win in Monaco for eight year, so that win was big. Second when Lyon played against Rangers, thier form was crap. Third when we played in Ibrox, we destroy a poor Rangers. So stop talking bullshit. One thing I must admit to you. You have wright about ”big” games. Lyon maybe don’t have a oppositions like Manchester or Barca, but that teams are part of the league and every win is big, even when you defeat Sochaux, who are in relegation zone.

Shazback makes a good point. It’s hard to admit, but Lyon haven’t accomplished much this season. But I don’t think most of us were happy at winning at Ibrox. Under normal circumstances, I think that would have been expected. But it was special because of the odds - we’ve had such an injury hit season, such poor morale, such shitty tactics in the beginning, so much player infighting, that I think we did better than I would have expected in these circumstances.
I also think that despite our performances this year, this is Lyon’s strongest ever team. And if things could go right just once - no huge injury crisis, a peaceful locker room, some boldness sent to Perrin, Lyon could achieve great things. After all, we know we have the quality. Maybe not the quality to be one of the super teams, but enough to consistently punch above our weight. It’s just that final step that goes wrong for us. It’s not an excuse, and really, we need to keep improving.
