Miralem Pjanic is Coming to Lyon
By: Inara | May 9th, 2008
I’ve been waiting a while to report this because all I’ve been seeing so far are whispered rumors, but now all the newspapers are reporting it, and the player himself was seen at Lyon last Wednesday. But neither the player nor the respective clubs have made a formal announcement, so don’t get too excited yet.
I’ve mentioned Miralem Pjanic on this blog before, but only in passing, so here are some deets (I’ll write up a more detailed background if when there is a press conference).
He’s an 18 year old attacking midfielder playing for FC Metz, who will be relegated back to Ligue 2 at the end of this season. But despite the poor performance of his club, Pjanic has been outstanding and was often the sole bright light coming out of an otherwise doomed Saint-Symphorien.
Though it’s his breakout year, his quality is so obvious that the biggest clubs in the world have been watching him week in and week out - Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter, Milan, etc. And two weeks ago, Barcelona made a formal offer.
However, Pjanic is too young to leave France, and with his development at such a critical stage, he knows it would be best if he stayed near home for another few years. So he’s decided to pick Lyon, where he’ll get the best of both worlds - exposure, top level experience, the opportunity to play with many talented players, and a higher salary - all within a comfortable environment.
The financial and technical details of this transaction haven’t been announced yet, though the transfer fee will probably be around €8m (perhaps rising to €10m - Aulas is always generous with domestic clubs when it comes to transfer fees). No word either on the length of this contract, though some sources say it would be for 5 years. There is a persistent rumor that Pjanic will have the option to leave after three years, though I have a hard time believing it because that weakens Lyon’s position, and Aulas would never allow that. I guess we’ll find out soon though.
It’s always great news when your club buys the hottest (and genuine) talents available, especially when they beat bigger clubs to their signature, but I’m having a hard time getting excited. We have such a stacked midfield that it’s making me cross eyed. Let’s take a look at who we will have next year:
Mathieu Bodmer, Juninho, Ederson, Kim Kallstrom, Miralem Pjanic, Clement Grenier, Jeremy Toulalan, Fabio Santos, Marc Crosas
We can’t assume Kallstrom is leaving (though it seems likely). Grenier will probably spend his first year in the reserves, but given the level of hype, I’m sure he’ll get some time in cup matches. Toulalan and Fabio Santos are DMs, though when played together, one of them turns into a CM. As for Crosas, he’s supposed to be returning to Barca this summer, but Lyon have formally contacted Barca about keeping him (plus Crosas really wants to stay). So who knows how that will turn out.

Pjanic has embarrassed Lyon on more than one occasion.
Of course, there is the option of playing Pjanic as a winger (he’s like Ribery and Nasri in this regard), but Lyon have a lot of wingers as well. Pjanic coming to Lyon might finally force Hatem Ben Arfa to leave, which would be very bad news. Ben Arfa said recently that he wants to stay at Lyon, but only if he gets to play. Who can blame him? Lyon’s wingers:
Hatem Ben Arfa, Kader Keita, Sidney Govou, Cesar Delgado, Loic Remy, Anthony Mounier, Karim Benzema
Remy’s loan ends this June, and with Lens about to be relegated, there seems to be no chance that he’ll be staying there. Mounier will probably be in the reserves again this year, which is too bad because he’s a good player. And Benzema has on too many occasions played on the flank as well.
I’m glad that Pjanic is coming to Lyon. Really, I am. But I’m absolutely confused as to how all these players will be accommodated.

mrCham,Makelele was born in Congo, but plays for France.Zlatan is bosnian, but just because of the corrupt people in our FA,he plays for Sweden, because they felt he isn’t good enough hehe

Reports in England are saying Arsenal have sealed a £16million deal for Ben Arfa. Would be very sad if this is true. Pjanic may have been bought as a direct replacement

Pjanic plays with both legs.He can play in the middle and as a right or left winger.I am sure he can replace Ben Arfa.He has great technique, dribbling, shot, passing, crossing…pure footballer able to play on every position in the midfield.

Bosnian; What are you talking about? I’m from Sweden and I know pretty much about Zlatan’s history and background. He was born and raised in Sweden - and that makes him Swedish. He has in NO way any His parents on the other hand was from Balkan. Hell, he has never ever requested to play for Bosnia. He is very proud to be from Sweden so please stop being so patriotic and stupid about it. And I dont really see the point in brining up Makelele - how is he, in any way, related to your point? Just chill and accept that the only thing Bosnian about Zlatan is his name. Period.

Hmm.. error on the post above. Ignore the broken sentence “He has in NO way any” when you read it!

mrCham,i brought in Makelele cause i tghought that you’re french.I can imagine that it’s pretty hard for you in Sweden that the best player that ever played for Sweden is not swedish, but bosnian.Maybe you don’t know about that story, and maybe Zlatan doesn’t want to talk about it now that he plays for Sweden, but his father offered our FA several times Zlatan before he started playing for Sweden, but our FA told his father that he isn’t good enough to play for our first squad, and they told him he can play for the B squad. His father and Zlatan got angry, with good reasons, and Zlatan accepted the first call from Sweden several months later.
So don’t get angry,Zlatan’s name is bosnian,Zlatan’s surname is bosnian,Zlatan’s genes and blood are bosnian, even his playing style is bosnian. So,just work hard, enjoy the football, and some day Sweden will also have a good footballer.Posted from

Hmmm, there are several ways to understand what a ‘nation’ actually means. There are even different sociological ways to explain it, and there is a general consensus that this question is open to debate. As things stand, Ibrahimović is both Swedish and Bosnian, Bosnian by blood and language, Swedish by his citizenship and the fact that he grew up and lived there. So, both of you are right and wrong at the same time. You just need to realise that there is not just one definite view to the whole issue of nations and nationality. Perhaps you could ask Zlatan how does he feel about it, but even then the debate wouldn’t be closed…

I don’t want this to get too far off topic, but I brought up Zlatan because he was offered to us first, just like ‘Bosnian’ said. His father and youth coach both kept trying to get the BiH FA to take him, but when they finally relented they only offered him a spot on the B-team for a trip to India. Zlatan himself admitted this, and that is the only reason I’m comparing Pjanic to him. As for whether he’s Bosnian or Swedish, that’s a completely different matter that there’s no use getting into a stupid argument over.

Players choosing what country to play for is a complicated thing. And Pjanic refusing Sweden for Bosnia isn’t entirely unprecedented. For example, players like Kanoute and Momo Sissoko were born in France and learned football in France, but they chose to represent the countries of their parents. Both Drogba and Evra came to France when they were 5, yet Evra chose to represent France while Drogba chose the Ivory Coast. So really, it comes down to two things: what you feel like and also, a little bit more cold blooded, where you will get more playing time (Kanoute chose Mali for this reason while Deco used his citizenship to play for Portugal - fyi, I’m not criticizing that either). Not saying that Pjanic was the same way, it sounds like he picked Bosnia because he identified with it more strongly, but it’s just hard to predict what a player will do.

I think it’s realistic that Ben Arfa goes to Arsenal. Both clubs,Arsenal and Lyon, fought for Pjanic. He plays in the same position as Ben Arfa, attacking midfielder or winger. So,if it’s true that Pjanic signs for Lyon i suppose there will be a lot of pressure from Arsenal to buy Ben Arfa.

Pierre - the new of ben arfa’s departure is according to The Sun………………..The Sun. Seriously, we cant take them as reliable sources for news. Until i see another news outlet besides Goal.com, then i might be incline to believing.

Looks like I was right about a possible Govou departure :

With regards to Ibrahimovic…Of course he’s not Swedish. You can’t really argue with that because errr…well he just simply is an ethnic Bosnian, a fact you can’t argue with. I’m Italian born in England always lived here, but that doesn’t make me English, even if I wanted to be.
Anyway, Pjanic will be a success. He’s certainly got the quality, and just as importantly, he seems mature and well-grounded enough to keep working hard and staying focussed; I fully expect him to become a household name in a few years.Posted from

Govou talks about leaving every year. And yet he never does (his wages at OL are really high, don’t know what clubs would match that).

INARA : except that this time, as it’s stated this it’s his last chance to go abroad.
And besides, I don’t think Govou sees much future and buddies in the lockerroom anymore. It smells the end of a reign really.

“Remy’s loan ends this June, and with Lens about to be relegated, there seems to be no chance that he’ll be staying there”
Inara… why do you wanna break my heart like that !!??
Reading it nearly made me cry !And I’m happy about Pjanic.
Everytime I saw him playing, he was a winger, and not a midfielder.
I think he can be a very talented back up for the first season… until Ben Arfa or Keita leave us.Posted from

Evilo: With Malouda, Abidal, Cacapa, and Wiltord gone, and with Coupet possibly leaving, not much of the old guard is left. I think Govou would like to leave, but he never gets interesting enough offers from clubs of at least a similar stature. I know Atletico were interested in him last year, but Govou didn’t leave due to the wage issue. I honestly don’t see him leaving for a lower salary (though I won’t shed tears if he does).
Jo: It’s really unfortunate for Lens. They have some really good players and a terrific fanbase. No excuse to be relegated, not financial difficulties like Nantes or the perpetual doom and gloom over PSG. It’s as if everyone at Lens just shut off for key periods of the season.

I don’t understand why people underestimate Govou so much. Every new coach, it’s the same thing, he starts off on the bench, has a reputation for partying, and by the time october comes, he has a starting spot on the team and nobody can’t say anything about it.
It’s sad that such a player who may be having his best season yet is still not felt by the staff and the fans. It feels like when Makelele left madrid, nobody was really sad about it. Govou is an amazing player in my opinion.Posted from

Govou started very strong this year (probably the best he’s played in L1) but since november, he’s been HORRIBLE.
So basically, the exact opposite to what you said.If Govou is amazing, then 1/3rd of the league is amazing.
Because, he’s not even close to top 10 in L1 IMO.Posted from

I totally agree with Magnussson. I’m not a huge fan of Govou, but you really understimate him, and maybe you don’t understand the real job of Govou on a pitch… !
This guy is everywhere, he’s not just a winger. He has a real matter on defensive time, and concerning the pressing.
Perrin very often use him on the left now… Why ? Because Grosso is a little bit too offensive, and Govou balance it.
He really do a lot of runs and do a big part for the team. I’ll be sad if he leaves.About Lens, Inara, I have to disagree, I’m sorry.
You cannot say “no excuses”, there are. And a lot !!
I have to remember you that everything started with a mistake about the coach. Beyond that, JPP tryed to safe the club, but the foundation was so weak !
And when Daniel Leclerc arrived, with Nadir, Filou and Loic, you cannot say that Lens played bad. They were, (and they still are) terrific !
But that f****** GAME against PSG in final of cdl changed everything.
We lost on a very VERY questionable judgment. We lost Loic Remy for one month too ! And that “banderole” stuff was really difficult for all the club. I can tell.
I watched every games, since that point, you cannot believe how many other unluck stuff Lens had ! It’s so incredible. The goalkeeper was on fire. When that was not the goalkeeper, that was a goal at the 92th ! When that was not that goal, that was an AMAZING goal that NO defense or goalkeeper could arrest. I just remember you that 2 of the 5 most beautiful goal of the season was scored against lens…
Aruna Dindane, our top striker was on fire since 2/3 games (he had a verrrry difficult season), and… he got an injury in the beginning of the game against Monaco… ! 6 months out !!!
Hilton got injured in the same game, 22 sutures because of a monaco’s player foot so high ! The monegasque didn’t have any yellow card !! And that incredible fault was in the box ! They played Lille without him. I remember you he is in the top squad of UNFP Ligue 1, and Lens captain.
I know we are not here to speak about Lens, but for the next game, I think you guys will be “a little” Lens supporter.
So that’s why I wanted to explain to you what is REALLY the situation at Lens today.
And really, I’m not always complaining about referee’s mistake, but what happens against Lens since 10 games is really incredible. I can tell 20 BIG mistakes. The last one ? A goal for Rennes refused against Toulouse for a off side who was… on side.
That would have been SOOO important for the Lens goal average.
Never mind, I agree Lens have his fault, but they REALLY don’t deserve to be relegated. That would be unfair. And god you know I love football, and I can be hard with the two teams I support when I’m angry against them. But today, I cannot be angry against Lens, and any other lens supporter is. If that’s not a sign… ?So we just (you and me) have to cross our fingers and hope Lens will stop being JINX next saturday. Believe me, they will be as motivated as they have been during the last games.
You’ll see the way Lens is playing. We will probably discuss about it after the game.Posted from

Bosnian : Even though I live in Sweden - I’m not Swedish - so I’m not offended by what you can only assume is indirect insults. Show me some sources about Zlatan’s father going to the FA wanting him to play for Bosnia. I don’t understand how that’s even possible since he is not even a Bosnian Citizen!!!!

mrCham,Zlatan has dual citizenship-bosnian and swedish. That fact you can find on every relevant source, page. It’s a well known story that his father informed bosnian FA many times about Zlatan.I mean,it’s not a secret. You can find on google many articles and interviews about it,just ask some bosnian to translate it.Most articles about that were written in the magazine “BH DANI”,where people from our FA spoke about how they made the mistake not to call him up for the A,but for the B squad of Bosnia for some tournament in India.
But this is a story about Pjanic.I accept that Zlatan is playing for Sweden today and end of the story.I still consider him as a bosnian, cause he is simply bosnian.I just said,we,bosnian fans shall not allow our corrupt and stupid people in the FA to lose another talent like Ibrahimovic.
And i don’t want to talk about Ibrahimovic anymore,he plays for Sweden,Pjanic is goint to play for B&H…the end!Posted from

I just don’t understand how the hell you guys could “lose” Ibrahimovic when you technically never had him. Even if he is from Bosnia - he was born and raised in Sweden - end of story.
