Sidney Govou Arrested For Drunk Driving

By: Inara | December 15th, 2008

Oh Sid. So much for proving the world wrong about your reputation.

For all of his whining over the fact that he’s frequently labeled as a party animal – something he considers most unfair – it looks like all he’s done is reinforced his image. For those of you who aren’t familiar with his “background,” Laurie wrote about it a while back for the France World Cup Blog.

He was caught driving under the influence in Lyon the night after their bore 0-0 draw with Marseille. According to reports, Govou’s blood alcohol level was five times over acceptable limits under French law. To be more specific, he had 2.6 grams of alcohol per liter of blood in his body.

That is a lot of alcohol.

This comes on the heels of the news that he’s parted with his agent of over ten years because he wants a change. We’re all familiar with his antics every summer when he tries to angle a move to another club, a move which fails to materialize because of his high wage requirements. He has only a year and a half left of his contract, and it will depend on Claude Puel if Lyon will offer him another extension.

But his recent escapades won’t do him any favors, especially since Aulas hates it when his players tarnish their images with foolish behavior. The occasional goal he scores and his defensive contributions may not be enough to make up for his frequent outbursts in the media and the fact that his personal life is so often in the news.

I apologize for abandoning you guys for the past few weeks, but John has been running this blog beautifully in my absence. It might take me a few days, but I promise I’ll get to those of you who have emailed me.

I don’t feel for him at all. Drinking any excess amount of alcohol; let alone five times the legal limit, and then driving kills. Full stop period. Nobody has the right to endanger other peoples lives like this.

This was also inevitable. Govou’s nightlife (mostly its just excess alcohol) is well know. He lives very locally to us and several taxi drivers have taken him home when he can’t even remember where he lives. Too bad he didn’t at least take a taxi on Sunday. Hopefully he looses his license for a long time now.

how does a professional athlete take his career seriously and then do harm to himself by drinking to excess on a regular basis? i’m sure Govou is in pretty good shape but the greats in the sport, Zidane, Platini etc never let their partying and drinking get out of control like that.

Welcome back! What I don’t understand is, when you are such a star, have soo much money, etc… you have to have an entourage, lots of friends, people who will do anything for you, because you are a star, and so forth and so on. How the hell do you not get someone to be a designated driver if you are going to drink too much? Or take a taxi and have someone drive your car home for you. I’m sure there are people who would volunteer to carry Sid’s luggage, or even wipe his back side. Stupid, just plain stupid. There’s no excuse for that.

Does anyone else besides me feel that we should have taken this guy + cash for Malouda? I think we would have had an even more devastating midfeild pairing with Toulalan and he can play right back also, which we all know have come in very handy right about now:

Lots and lots of styling gel, that bill should run upwards of 80 euro.

Personally I dont care much about his partying as long as he always delivers on the field. Drunk driving is terrible, and he should be punished for that, but as long as he gets wastey faced well clear of a match I see little problem with that. He should move to Sunderland where Cisse and co. party it up like no other.

Well, Wiltord was also a player who partied hard off the pitch, but he never let it affect his performance on the pitch. In fact, he was one of the fittest players at OL despite being one of the oldest. I think for Aulas, the issue would be more about PR than anything else. It sets a bad example to the younger players. So far, Lyon haven’t fallen victim to the trends you see at bigger clubs, where players get in the news for reasons other than their game on the pitch.

I don’t have any problem with Govou “drinking” way of life.
He’s one of the guys who fight everytime on the pitch, running a lot and always trying to be where he has to, for the team benefits. I don’t think he let alcohol affect his performance. He drink AFTER the games.
On sunday, he was at Boumsong’s birthday, so that was comprehensible he drank. He should not do it so much, I agree. But a footballer’s life is a lot of hardship, so I understand they sometimes need to party.
That’s a long time we know here Sid is like that. If OL had something to say about that, that should have been done few years ago.

But what I REALLY don’t accept is driving after partying like that. Govou made a huge mistake in that way, and I hope he’ll have to pay it to remember never do it again.
    He could have kill.

And he had the bravery to face the medias by himself and apologize.
I think that’s a good point to notice.

He probably will not doing it again, at least driving.

    Interview with Mounier

    Mounier : « I’m still working hard »

Anthony, OL have only taken 2 points from a possible 12. How is the squad dealing with the situation?
We’re not taking it too badly. We are well aware that this is a delicate period that we are going through. It’s true that we haven’t taken a lot of points from the last four League games. But when you look at the standings, we are still on top with a three point lead. We have one match to get through, well, before the winter break.

Things are getting tight at the top …
Our draw against OM (0-0) allowed a number of teams to close in on us. Because of that we are going to Caen to take all three points and go away for the holidays in a better frame of mind. We’re going to be staying focused this week so that we can put in a great performance during this match. Everyone knows that we aren’t scoring a lot at the moment, but we’ve had our chances. Maybe we’re lacking a little bit of realism and good fortune, but I think that it will come back.

Paris, Marseille et Bordeaux are just three points behind OL. Which one of these team’s is the most dangerous as far as you are concerned?
Marseille have a good side. Paris are slowly but surely coming back without making too much noise. I think we have to watch out for all three of them as far as the title is concerned. But we really have to focus on our games and take each match as it comes without getting distracted by any other side. On the other hand it’s good for the League that the big sides are getting back to the top of the table.

How do you feel about the amount of playing time you have had at OL?
After my performance against Nancy (2-1 ; Week 7, September 27. Mounier played in two key passes), everyone put me on a pedestal. Then I didn’t really get a game for over a month. That’s how it is in football. It proves that things change quickly. But I’m still working hard in training. I was lucky enough to start the match against Bayern Munich in the Champions league (December 10), I was delighted about that. Then I was an unused sub against Marseille. These are choices the coach has to make and I respect them. I’m here to progress. I’ll keep on working hard and take each match as it comes. I feel good with this squad of players, when I am called upon I give my all for the team.

Lefutur, are you talking about the Platini that made an (in)famous ad for a sleazy Languedoc red wine with the tag-line “Fruité c’est plus musclé” whilst (lest my memory evades me) he was standing next to a Renault 5?

The opposite argument can also be made, since Garrincha, Maradonna and Best were well acquaited with the contents of numerous bar cabinets and other substances…

Kim Källström : « We have to change things around quickly »

The draw for the Champions League will take place tomorrow. Which side would you like to avoid?
If we can avoid Barcelona and Manchester United, it wouldn’t be a bad thing. Barcelona are very strong at the moment and we already played Manchester last season, we’d like to play against a team we haven’t come up against yet. At this stage of the competition there are only big team’s.

Would you be happy with a draw against Panathinaïkos ?
Obviously we would have a chance of going through, but you have to remember that « Pana » finished top of their group in front of Inter, and managed to beat them in Milan. On top of that, it’s never easy playing in Greece.

OL are away to Caen on Saturday. How important is this game?
It’s very important as we’re going through a bad period at the moment. We have gone four games without a win, we have to turn things around quickly. We have one game to go this year and we want to finish up on a good note. With a three point lead at the top of the table going into the winter break and a qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League, our record for the first half of the season would be positive. There is a lot to play for in this match. We’d like to go home happy. In any case, the winter break will do everyone the world of good.

Olympique Lyonnais are not very flamboyant at the moment. How do you explain that?
It’s true we’re not playing very well at the moment. We’ve been strong defensively, have hit our opponents on the break but we haven’t been able to show what we can really do. I can’t really explain it. We’ve often been strong in the second half but our first half performances have been poor. Next year we’ll have to avoid being 2-0 down at half time; it gives us a chance to show our good team spirit but it’s always hard to catch up.

Why is the team having so much trouble scoring?
Benzema is a great trump card to have up front. When he doesn’t play, things are more difficult. We’re having a tough time at the moment and aren’t creating much, there is a lot of waste in our build-up play. We’ve also played a lot of games on a poor pitch at Gerland. But we shouldn’t dwell on it too much, we’re still top. If we start asking ourselves too many questions then things will start getting complicated. We have to clear our minds to be able to express ourselves on the field.

Against Caen, as Fabio Grosso is suspended, you could end up playing at left-back. What do you think about that?
Because of all the injuries we have at the moment, we don’t have many defenders available. That’s why players can find themselves in positions that they are not really used to. If I end up playing there, I’ll do my best even if it isn’t easy playing out on the wing for me. As ever, the coach will make his choices and I will adapt to them.

What is your opinion on your first half of the season?
It’s been good. During pre-season training, everyone said that I wouldn’t play too much, taht I would have to leave, but at the end of the day I’ve played quite a lot, and that for a team at the top of the table, but also playing in the elite European competition. The coach rotates the squad frequently, so I’ve had a lot of chances to play.

-nice say Kim, I hope that your words will hear all mighty God

Fred is an idiot. He’s a nonentity in my mind, and I don’t understand how some people defend him and his presence at OL. He’s whining about a situation that he himself created.

Also, about Govou: I don’t care that he drank that much. That’s his business, and until it affects him on the pitch, it doesn’t trouble me. But what makes me furious is that he drove around like that. He endangered lives and could have killed people. That is reckless conduct and not acceptable for someone who purports to be a “good example.”

Is anyone really suprised by Fred’s latest stunt? I had a feeling he would do something like this. He’s an absolute infant. I hope Puel benches him the rest of the time he’s here and makes Piquionne the #2. Piq is actually hungry to play and behaves like a professional. Infact, if the rumors of Wiltord leaving because of Fred are true, I wish it had been the other way around, and we had kept Sylvain. Good ridance to Fred!!!!
