A Painful Home Stretch
By: Inara | November 24th, 2007Our schedule until the end of December looks really ugly. According to Lyon’s website, this year’s end-of-the-year fixtures are more complicated than in previous seasons. Let’s take a look (I bolded the most challenging matches):
11/24 aka TODAY: Rennes – Lyon
11/27: Lyon – Barcelona
12/02: Lyon – Strasbourg
12/08: Caen – Lyon
12/12: Rangers – Lyon
12/15: Lyon – Nice
12/22: Nancy – Lyon
Rennes is one of Lyon’s bogey teams. They are genuine contenders for a Champions League spot (some argue that they should have qualified for this season) and always know which buttons to push when it comes to Lyon. They were the team who were responsible for Lyon’s ONLY defeat in the first half of last season (from August to December, Lyon were undefeated except at Rennes…boo).
Then in April, Lyon were supposed to officially win the title during a home game against them, except Rennes held Lyon to a goalless draw. That pissed off Lyon supporters who came for a title celebration, and they left the stadium booing. Oh, and that was the game where Milan Baros told Stephan MBia he smelled. Yeah, so Lyon have a lot of issues with Rennes.
And then there are the two crucial Champions League matches, and Lyon needs to win both to ensure qualification. Good luck with that, Alain Perrin.
Though I didn’t bold the games against Caen, Strasbourg, and Nice, that doesn’t mean they are easy. Though just promoted, Strasbourg are chilling in the top ten and have been punching above their weight all season. Caen proved to be a bitch to play against in the Coupe de la Ligue, and I can’t imagine them changing their tactics for a league match. As for Nice, they can surprise you. Sometimes they are disappointing, but sometimes they will shock you by snatching a draw at the Gerland or beating the crap out of Marseille.
The last match is against Nancy, Lyon’s nearest challengers. They are also very tough opponents and their best advantage is a rock solid defense which has conceded only seven goals (god I’m so jealous). They’ve also been scoring too, with the third best offense in the league, with 21 goals. Nancy are looking like the real deal this season, and worse, they have a game in hand.
At this point last season, Lyon were already qualified for the CL knockout rounds and had a 12 point cushion above second place (which increased to 17 by the break). But believe or not, it’s not because Lyon is doing so much more poorly than last year but that the other clubs are doing better.
It should also be noted that since 2001-2002 (the year of their first title), Lyon have NEVER won their last match before winter break.

Lyon are in form now, I am not to concerned about Ligue 1 matches, its the Barca and Rangers games that are most important during this stretch. In Ligue 1 I would like Fred to get more playing time to rest Benzema, while I would like to see some of the lesser used players get some time against Caen Strasbourg and Nice. That mean the young guys, Belhadj and rehabing Cris and Coupet back to full match pace. This stretch will make or break Lyons season, and Alain Perrin’s job. Lets see if he makes it past December….

Corey Cris isn’t due back til late Jan at the earliest, though Coupet should be back v.soon. He’s hoping to get at least one match in before Rangers

You just lost benzema. That’s not good for Barcelona.
And Cheyrou didn’t even do it on purpose.
That’s a shame.Posted from

How bad did the injury look? I only have text streams and they barely mention an injury. If he’s out for Tuesday that would be a disaster – rather keep Benzema for Barca and give back the three points.

Well, he was put on a litter immediatly and they went straight to the locker room. Apparently they’re not sure yet if he’s gonna be in Barcelona.

benzema should not have played today. even if fred has been struggling he needs more playing time and benzema desperately needed some rest. it looks like a thigh injury so that could have been fatigue related. either way im pointing my finger at perrin…or aulas if he had any say in the starting line-up.

Benzema left the game on a stretcher but he had a smile on after the game, so I hope he’ll be playing on Tuesday. Actually more than hope because neither Fred nor Baros look to be at the top of their art.

Definately more than hope – having to start with either Fred or Baros would be a disaster. Fred is way off his game.
I suspect there was a big discussion about playing Benzema with Barca coming up. So maybe the knock was a paniced wake up call and he was immediately taken off to prevent anything more. Or maybe thats just wishful thinking on my behalf(and not possibly wanting to contemplate Tuesday without Benzema playing).
Actually i suspect if he does play he will be all but marked out of the game – but thats three defenders busy and not paying attention to Ben Arfa and Govou.Posted from

Ben Arfa has shown he has his shooting boots on recently, and Govou scored for France and played relatively well, so hopefully this creates a problem for Barca’s back four, whether its Benz or Fred playing. Then again, Grosso is gonna have to have the game of the season to keep Messi quite, while Ronaldinho will be well rested after not playng today, and Toto and Anderson have to deal with only Henry, who has looked off form with Barca, luckily its not Etoo who I think is much more dangerous.

The news article said a bad bruise on Benzema’s thigh, but he’ll be out for the CL game.

I still do not understand why Perrin doesn’t give a rest to the important players before the CL matchs. The Benzema’s injury was predictable. We all see he was tired, and when you are tired you are less lucidity to score or to avoid blows. Even Barça give a rest to some of its players before a CL matchs.

Why doesn’t Perrin rest Benzema? Because Fred is out of form, Baros is black-listed since his 200km/h antics as well as being injured, and there’s no other striker? Because Nancy are still hard on Lyon’s heels? Because Perrin is a spineless git?
Honestly, I think he should have played Fred for the whole 90 minutes, too bad if Fred got injured and Govou or Ben Arfa switched to striker. But Benzema has been one of the rare Lyon players to really find some form. Lyon pretty much need to win both their games in the CL now to qualify (yes, I know a draw and a win are enough), and without Benzema against Barcelona, it could be a long long 90 minutes.
Perrin should accept to lose or draw some matches before CL games, especially with the not-so-deep squad he has. But I guess he’s still following Aulas’ words : our main objective is the league, the Champions League is just a bonus… And when you think of it like that, you see why he fields a “top XI” three days before a CL game.

And who cares if it was a ligue 1 match, no one cares about the result. As long as Benzema doesn’t get injured. Which he did. Why the hell didn’t Perrin let Fred play the full 90 minutes

Just posted on OL site a quote from Lacombe saying that Benzema has been x rayed this morning and has a small bruise and is looking very compromised for Tuesday. Had the match been Wednesday that might well have left enough recovery time.
Bad news indeed.
btw the French papers are all over Ben Arfa with fantastic reviews and an almost unheard of 8.5 out of 10 from L’Equipe – there’s going to be a lot riding on his shoulders this week.Posted from

The young striker of Lyon, Loïc REMY can interest LORIENT and his manager GOURCUFF for a lend ( sorry for the grammar)

Well thats something (a lot really).
Perrin has announced his squad, which includes Benzema but thats very much a just in case scenario.Posted from

The last news is he won’t train until tuesday. he was at this morning’s “decrassage” but didn’t run. Like someone said before, Lacombe and the doctors at Lyon were saying he would have been fine for the wednesday match but now he’ll need constant care until tuesday. It really sucks because Fred and Barros are not up to par. The only reassurement for Lyon is that Govou, Benarfa and even Juninho are in great shape.

No need to be terribly worried about Barca: our away form is rubbish, and Henry is out injured, so you might be facing a 17 year old center forward.

Why all the hate for Gudjohnsen and Ezquerro? Sure, they’re a notch down from Henry or Eto’o, but Gudjohnsen was being scouted by Lyon this summer…
Ok, Ezquerro might not be as exciting as Bojan or Dos Santos, but Gudjohnsen still is someone I wouldn’t fancy playing against when he’s got Ronaldinho, Deco, Xabi, Iniesta and Messi to help him…

benzema startedbecause we have to keep winning, plus the international week gave him a little rest (he played just over half the two matches, and it was importnat to put the team that will play barça on the field together, they heven’t even been able to practice together for a while. my guess is that he wouldn’t have played much longer than he did anyway.
it’s a bruise, and they say if the match was wednesday karim would probably play but for tomorrow it’s very iffy…
