chris – I really believe Chivu to be the best CB in the world right now. He’s just like Nesta five years ago without the annoying hair so I think that paying him 4.5 mil is not bad when you players like Recoba getting the same when they haven’t been good in years.

It looks like Grosso is seriously considering Lyon’s offer. No “I hate France” comments have appeared in the media, and he’s now debating whether he wants to come to Lyon or stay at Inter. Except it’s doubt he’ll stay because Inter are only too glad we want to take Grosso off their hands, and they are also after Chivu.

its how it works in all american sports, which is why athletes do so much endorsement stuff in the offseason. I believe this is also true for all football players, how could you be getting paid and your not training or anything?

I’d be surprised if those were Grosso’s wages. In any Chivu deal with rumors of Grosso it has been said that Inter would be paying some of his contract because of Roma’s cap. Plus, Inter overpays for players. That’s the only reason they’ve acquired the talent. They’re offering Chivu €4.5m per right now which is absurd.

By the way, one thing I’ve always been confused on. I know in England and France wages are typically reported on a weekly or monthly basis, whereas in Italy we typically see it as a yearly base. Are those figures spread out over 12 months or just for the season? I know American athletes only get paid during the season, I’ve always wondered if this is how the majority of sports leagues work.

Apparently, Grosso is earning only €1.5m per year with Inter. According to this (not reliable I know), Aulas is offering nearly double those wages, at €2.5m per year (I think OL’s salary cap is €3.5m/year).

Since when have Lyon been able to pay more than an Italian club? Maybe it is progress!

And Jo, I know I’ve been very negative in my last few posts, but I feel like Lyon is in a “make it or break it” position. I know once 2010 arrives, we’ll have a better financial platform, but the question is whether we can maintain momentum until 2010.

I’m not sure he had a €250 000 per month. Tiago is just getting in Juve €410 000 per month ! And I cannot believe a world cup champion is so downgrade against a player like Tiago.
So (like usual), that will be VERY difficult for OL to get Grosso…

Yes, that seems to be sad. But I used to think it’s only the “first phase”. Since year 2000, OL is in this strategy. Earning money to become competitive with big european clubs. I guess that from 2010 starting point(and the new stadium), OL will enter in the “second phase” : Being an attractive big european club for each big players in Europe. Don’t U think so ?

Chris: I am not sure about the salary cap, though I do know that Juni and Coupet are now earning €300,000 per month. Tiago used to earn €100,000, and M. Diarra 250,000. So if Grosso’s salary isn’t over €250,000 per month, than Lyon could probably afford it. But it’s probably higher, and I doubt he’d want to come to L1.

Well if David Villa is worth €130m or so then Abidal is worth €65m at best.

Apparently that non-rumor of Fabio Grosso to Lyon is actually a rumor and maybe even a little more. Italian media is saying the two teams are negotiating. Inter asked for €9m after they bought him for €5-7m last year and he didn’t do all that well. Aulas, meet Moratti. Moratti, meet Aulas. You two should get along splendidly.

It also says that Lyon has a cap of €2m per annum (that true?). I believe Grosso makes much much more than that so that could be a deal killer. Although I’m pretty sure a move to France will be killed after he’s approached anyway. I don’t see it happening ever.
