Alain Perrin is the New Lyon Manager
By: Inara | May 30th, 2007
In a (un)surprising move, Lyon have named former Sochaux manager Alain Perrin following Gerard Houllier’s resignation.
Despite Didier Deschamps’s recent availability, Jean-Michel Aulas preferred Perrin for various reasons. First of all was a commitment to Lyon’s three year project, knowledge of the French league, being young and energetic, and being able to accept Lyon’s existing set-up (that is, no major changes among the technical staff, which is what DD wanted to do).
There is an excellent blog that describes why Perrin is the better manager as opposed to Deschamps. It’s written in French, but I recommend you run it through google translator because it does a great job in explaining the tactical and personality advantages of one over the other, as well as the fact that despite DD’s hype, Perrin has a better CV and is more experienced.
The question now becomes, is Alain Perrin enough to stop Lyon’s looming player exodus? It was enough to convince Juninho to stay, but for the others - Malouda, Coupet, Ben Arfa, etc - can he convince them that he can take them into Europe? Can he convince players from other clubs to join Lyon?
And will he be able to manage the many conflicting player egos (think Fred, Diarra, Govou)?

Well Abidal is gone, he is intent on a move so I say good ridance, he did nothing special this season, except keeping Berthod out of the lineup. I strongly believe Perrin will be able to keep Ben Arfa, Govou (I know you dont like that Inara), Fred and Coupet. Gregs problem is more he wants a 3 year deal, not a 1 year extension, which is logical, at 34 he has 3 or 4 years left in him, goalkeeperes playing careers peak between 32 and 36.

You will see what Abidal was worth when he doesn’t play anymore…I’m not a big Abidal fan either, and he can leave, but in all honesty I think we will miss his skills at the beginning. And I wouldn’t worry about Coupet, he just wants to make sure he’ll play several other years, which he will ! Aulas said that he hadn’t knelt down because he suffered from his knee but that he would have done it otherwise…:D
Please make a petition for my father who ate next to Aulas and Perrin at Argenson today and hasn’t asked for a signature or anything….

lol Aulas always eat at Argenson, when he buy a player ! Abidal will miss Lyon, but Belhadj is a very good player. More offensive than Abidal, but I’m pretty sure he will do what we are waiting about him.

I think Abidal looked so good because he plays in tandem with Malouda. Had a mediocre winger been in front of him, I don’t think people would rate him as highly.
Abidal is great, but I think being away from a winger as flexible as Flo might expose his weakness - his periodic loss of concentration. At Lyon, Florent will help out defensively when Abidal is caught with his pants down (though it is rare when it happens).
I don’t think Belhadj is as good, so I hope Malouda stays, at least until Belhadj settles in. And I too would like to see more of Berthod. He’s been very patient so far because he loves Lyon and doesn’t want to leave, but he’s not a saint!

I don’t like Berthod pretty much… I saw him playing 5 or 6 times, and he was really never as good as you have to be when you play for a team like Lyon…
Maybe it’s because he didn’t play enough… I hope…Posted from

Berthod has quality, it is why Le Guen promoted him at 18 or 19. The problem is he does not play, and that is how young talent develop in to consistent professionals, everyone must agree on atleast that. If you dont play how can you improve?

I think Berthod is the captain of the U21 french team. And Malouda said that he is going to leave !!!

He’s too old for the Espoirs now, as he was part of the Toulalan, Mavuba, and Clerc generation.
It’s too bad because that was his only chance to wear a France jersey as I don’t see him making it onto the NT.

Speaking of Mavuba, I heard he has signed for Juventus depsite Deschamps resigning, so there goes Frances other premier DM besides Makelele Toulalan and Alou. Althogh, Lasana Diarra looks really good, I hope he and Diaby keep getting selected along with Benz and Nasi. Next season, Ben Arfa will be on the left wing of the French NT!
