Anderlecht vs. Lyon

By: Inara | August 24th, 2009

Tomorrow, Lyon will be facing off against Anderlecht again for the second leg of the final round of Champions League qualification. Lyon have pretty much assured themselves of a spot in the group stages, thanks to their demolishing Anderlecht last week in France, but it’s a stretch to say that the Belgians have nothing to play for. While their chances of a comeback are small, weirder things have happened in football, and they’ll be playing in front of their home crowd. So Lyon will have to take tomorrow’s game at least somewhat seriously if they want to keep their European hopes alive.

Match background:

I already wrote up a brief overview of Anderlecht in last week’s preview, so I’m going to skip all that. The only thing to report is that they beat Zulte Waregem 2-0 away in their domestic league this past weekend. Something else to keep in mind is that Anderlecht have never lost at home to French opposition, having managed four wins and three draws in previous encounters. Lyon was one of those teams that walked away with a 1-0 loss, back in the 2003/2004 group stages.

Even so, those statistics aren’t particularly daunting when you consider how difficult it would be for Anderlecht to overcome their performance in the first leg. They’d need to win by at least four goals since they managed to score an away goal at the Gerland. However, I can’t see that happening. It’s been a really long time since Lyon have lost by four goals to anyone.

That being said, I can see Lyon walking away with a draw or even a 1-0 loss, if only because Puel would rather rest certain key players than risk injury. But only a really embarrassing defeat will keep Lyon from progressing to the next round. And judging from their performance last weekend against Auxerre, even the B team is primed for another victory. The squad is gelling together rather well, and the players are finally emerging out of their awkward pre-season form. So let’s hope that they continue their progression tomorrow.

Team news:

Anderlecht not only has injuries to contend with but suspensions as well. Jelle Van Damme will miss tomorrow’s match thanks to yellow card accumulation, while another three are one card away from missing their next match (though I don’t know how much that would matter, assuming that cards from the qualification stages get wiped clean before the CL/Europa league group stages. Additionally, Daniel Zítka, Sébastien Bruzzese, Jonathan Legear, and Nicolas Frutos will also miss tomorrow’s match due to various injuries.

Le groupe lyonnais: Lloris, Vercoutre – Cris, Bodmer, Boumsong, Réveillère, Cissokho, Clerc, Grosso – Toulalan, Källström, Gonalons, Makoun, Pjanic, Delgado – Mounier, Belfodil, Tafer, Bastos, Gomis, Lisandro

As you can see, John Mensah is still not included on the list (no doubt due to his impending transfer). But if that is the reason, strange to see Fabio Grosso on the list as well…Cleber Anderson and Sidney Govou are still out, as is Ederson, who picked up a slight ankle injury. The good news is that Lisandro Lopez and Francois Clerc are well again – for a while it was rumored that they would miss tomorrow’s match due to injury.

The big difference from last week is that Puel included quite a few of the youth players. Maxime Gonalons, Ishak Belfodil, and Yannis Tafer will be hoping to make their Champions League debuts, and if Lyon play really well tomorrow, one of them may even end up getting their wish.

Expected lineup:

Sometimes I think that I shouldn’t even bother with guessing the lineup. Puel is a lot harder to predict that Alain Perrin and Gerrard Houllier. It’s not even because Puel is amazingly creative or tactically brilliant – instead, he just ignores the obvious solution sometimes, which can get really frustrating.

So this time, I’m going to skip over writing out an actual lineup and instead state my thoughts on the players. First, it seems likely that Anthony Reveillere will get to start as RB. Even though he played the last two games, Francois Clerc is getting off an injury and might be rusty. Plus Reveillere’s form has been really good recently, so it’s not like Puel has anything to complain about. Aly Cissokho, who was rested this past weekend, is sure to start as LB (this also leaves Fabio Grosso conveniently free of being cup-tied). Cris was also rested against Auxerre, so expect to see him start. It’s a tossup over Mathieu Bodmer and Jean-Alain Boumsong. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I prefer Boumsong.

In midfield, it would be the logical thing for Puel to rest Jeremy Toulalan, but there is an unwritten law in French football that Toulalan is allowed no rest (possibly because he doesn’t need it since he’s a three-lunged machine). I can also see Puel starting Jean II Makoun. Two DMs are wholly unnecessary, but if he’s going to have two of them play against Auxerre, he’ll most likely do the same against Anderlecht. Assuming Makoun and Toulalan start, I’d guess that Kim Kallstrom will complete the midfield triangle. He was rested this weekend also whereas Miralem Pjanic played the entirety of the past two games.

Up front, it’ll be Bafetimbi Gomis, Michel Bastos, and Lisandro Lopez. I can’t imagine the front line any other way.

Viewing options:

Setanta will be broadcasting this match, and unlike last week, this time the game will be available in the US. Go to this website for streams, or if you are interested in stability and ease of access, you can buy a stream from UEFA.com for $10. You can also follow along on Lyon’s official match tracker.

And please share if you find a working link!

Expected result:

I have a feeling it’ll be a 1-1 draw. Neither team seems particularly motivated.

I would have rather seen no goal conceded, than another goal or two scored.

Yes the defence is going to be a problem, especially if they sell Grosso and Kallstrom becomes the de-facto backup at LB. They probably need another LB and CB to shore up the squad.

Benj: we have bastos and reveillere as back-up LBs and Kallstrom as a third, I think he’s pretty good now; put in some fine performances towards the end of last season.

Inara: “I won’t consider Lyon’s mercato a success unless we sign another defender.”

I thought Ronan was back. LoL. But you are right. The center of defense is frightning. But they won’t get one- at least not one worthy of starting- bec Puel already has a dilema on his hands: to bench or not to bench the captain- who deserves it; to bench the best of our CBs(Boumsong) or alienate Bodmer who he promised playing time at CB after he barred him from the midfield. I think the best bet will be that we pick-up Rami in the winter window.

Is it just me, or does Reviellere look like he deserves a call-up to the NT? That injury seems to have turned him into a new player.

using 4-3-3 is doing wonders to Rev, not quite sure if he can compete with Sanga tough(espcially because i haven’t seen him play for a few good months)

I think Cris’ play has led to at least one goal in every match he’s played, except two, Valenciennes and maybe Anderlecht first leg( I don’t remember if that was him or Bodmer).

Puel would be foolish not to act upon the defence at the moment as it’s clear to all that there is serious problems right now. As John said – Cris’ play is leading to us giving away 1 or 2 extra goals per game. He clearly shouldn’t be starting as he is quite frankly a bit of a liability to the team at the moment. Bodmer and Boumsong are more reliable! A new centre back really ought to be bought – but there is so little time remaining.

Inara – to consider the transfer window a failure would be harsh! Defence apart this Lyon team is looking fantastic. Bastos is that player we’ve been lacking since Malouda went, and Cissokho seems like the perfect man to go alongside him – bringing back the glory days of the Abidal/Malouda left flank. Lisandro and Gomis have been brilliant as well.

Just watched the highlights on sky and was disappointed to hear the way Richard Keys was talking about Lyon. I’ve never had any respect for the guy, as he is the typical ‘big 4′ type of pundit with little time for anything outside of these clubs and is just a general ass really. Anyway, on their analysis of the match the pundits were all talking about Lisandro and how he is one of the very best strikers in the world right now. Richard Keys thought into the endless crevasse that is his brain and asked – if he’s such a good player then why do you think he ended up at Lyon, shouldn’t he be aiming for a better club. To which all the other pundits disagreed and said how well Lyon had done over the years in the champs and that he would regard it as a step up.

I’ve been watching OL games on several channels in Spanish unfortunately; I say unfortunately because some of the Latin American commentors are sometimes unprofessional e.g., never learning how to pronounce the simplest of names, the racism and some other things, but it seems that now the Latin American and Spanish commentators are full of praise for Lyon- It doesn’t hurt that Lisandro and “Chelito” are in the squad. But it seems like this summer’s acquisitions/spending, Lisandro, and especially Aulas walking into Porto like he Florentino Perez and walking out with Cissokho after AC Milan’s embarassing bluff, may be paying major dividends in terms of credibility.

Michael: Yeah, that’s what I thought: It looked like Bodmer was the only one at fault, but after seeing the replay, Cris had to join the “party” as well. So Cris has given-up at least one goal in all except one game that he’s played. This has already cost us with the draw at Mans and might come back to bight us in the ass at the end of the season on goal differential; matter of fact, it’s already hurting our goal differential, and forget about when we face real strikers in the CL that are going to carve Cris up like a Christmas ham. Cris must be benched and someone else needs to to take-up the armband.

Yeah, the Captain and his Lieutenant must be relieved of authority. We need a mutiny! Only problem is who? Toulalan seems to be too reserved; maybe Boumsong.

Here is my opinion for the captain(even if I am not to close to the team so I dont know whats happening off the pitch):
Cris-He is here for a long time and knows all the players and becamed a club legend BUT in the last matches he is playing very bad and making fatal errors and I must be honest, with his performence in this season he cant even be a starter. That means NO
Sidney-The same thing like Cris,he is a real club legend and here since 1999 but he is also playing bad this season and with Bastos,Pjanic,Delgado,Ederson and even Mounier he is also questionable for the first XI spot and he also looks very unmotivated to play for OL.NO
Licha-It is way to early. He is an amazing player and probably our best in the moment but still NO.
Källström-I really think that when he is on his maximum he would be one of our best players but somehow he doesnt use his full potential and until he starts to be one of our best players NO.
Toulalan-I dont know if the story about Toule being to reserved is true but he never hasnt any problems in the team, always gives his all,he is one of the greatest holding midfielders in the world and IMO he really deserved to be the captain.Beside this there were never rumours about him leaving the club even if he could play in almost every club in the world. So a clear YEEEEES
Lloris-And finally my back up for Toule.I really like this guy and he is one of my favourite OL players(with Makoun and know probably Bastos). He really looks good this season and improved a lot.And because I like him YES.
So my choice would be Toulalan or Lloris :D
    Sory for my LOOOONG comment!
    Thoughts?

We also need to see how players act in practice, on the road, in the locker room etc. All we as fans have to go by is what we see on the pitch. My choices are as follow: 1-Toulalan. 2-LiLo(too soon) 3-Lloris(too young and maybe not very assertive) 4- Bastos (also too soon). I don’t know that any of these guys are leaders, but they bring energy and determination to every match. But again, you’d have to see the team behind closed doors in order to sniff-out who- if any- have “it.” Boumsong is the only one I’ve seen take command on the pitch. Now that this subject’s come-up, I’m thinking maybe it would have a good idea picking-up P. Viera.
