Auxerre vs. Lyon

The moment we have all been waiting for has arrived!

August 5, 2007
Stade de Gerland, Lyon
3:00 PM Eastern Time (21:00 in France)

Pre-match info:

Lyon begin their title defense by playing AJ Auxerre, accurately described as by Sam as a club that no one loves and no one hates (read Auxerre’s background here). They are coached by former OM manager Jean Fernandez, and while their ambitions don’t include the title or even Champions League qualification, a UEFA Cup spot isn’t out of their reach.

Auxerre lost some of their best players this summer. Younes Kaboul left for Tottenham, Bakary Sagna to Arsenal, and Benoit Cheyrou to Marseille. But they have been getting players too, most notably Marseille’s Toifilou Maoulida and Lyon’s Remy Riou. And don’t forget that they already have a great midfielder in Benoit Pedretti, as well as Ireneusz Jelen, Thomas Kalenberg, and Daniel Niculae who will add some flair.

They are a team that play solid football, and while they are unlikely to score more than one goal during a match, they are just as unlikely to concede more than one goal. Since tomorrow is the first day of L1, expect Auxerre to play more enthusiastically than usual.

On the Lyon side of things, Alain Perrin has selected eighteen players for this match. Missing are Fred, Gregory Coupet, Sebastien Squillaci, and Sylvain Wiltord (presumably left behind for being a bad boy).

Le groupe lyonnais: Vercoutre, Hartock, Belhadj, Grosso, Cris, Müller, Réveillère, Clerc, Toulalan, Fabio Santos, Juninho, Källström, Bodmer, Ben Arfa, Govou, Keita, Benzema, Baros.

Juninho and Nadir Belhadj are just returning from injuries, so they will probably be second half subs. It’s also a tossup as to whether Kim Kallstrom or Mathieu Bodmer will start (if the 4-4-2 has one major drawback, it’s that it can’t accommodate as many midfielders). Jeremy Toulalan will have one of the two spots for sure. My money would be on Kallstrom getting the second because not only did he perform so well during pre-season, but he hasn’t signed a contract extension yet (in fact, word on the street is that he may try to force his way out of Lyon). If Perrin is smart, he’ll let Kallstrom start to smooth any ruffled feathers.

For Remy Vercoutre, having Auxerre as his first challenge is a boon because they one of the less attacking teams in L1 (not that Auxerre should be taken lightly, they are still good). Given that Vercoutre’s only played in two pre-season games out of five (and in one of them he only played for 45 minutes), he isn’t in top form at the moment.

One of the other big questions is who will start on the left wing. Ben Arfa is the obvious choice, but Sidney Govou had an excellent game against Sochaux in that very position. I think it will be Govou, with Ben Arfa coming on later.

Expected lineup:

Vercoutre
Reveillere - Cris - Muller - Grosso
Keita - Toulalan - Kallstrom - Govou
Baros - Benzema

This will most likely be a fairly tight match. At best, Lyon will win 2-1, at worst, a 0-0 draw. Hopefully the Gerland will be full of fans cheering on their team to perform as best as they can.

The game will be broadcasted by Setanta and Canal+ for those of you who have it. It will also be streamed, so check here for links.

I would just like to end this by saying how much I’m looking forward to this next season. I suppose a cynical OL fan wouldn’t be as excited, especially given the transfer season so far. But I honestly believe that next year will be more thrilling than the last, with a Lyon team that promises to be more exciting, a coach who isn’t afraid of his ambitions, players that actually want to wear the OL jersey, and a lineup that will feature Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa regularly. What more can any fan ask for?

In fact, if there is a genuine title race this year, it’s because the other teams have gotten stronger (particularly Bordeaux, Marseille, and Lens), and not because Lyon have gotten weaker (they haven’t). So we should give those clubs the credit they deserve for carrying out a good mercato.

Happy L1, everyone!!!

Woo! Now, just so you know, if Lyon were to concede a goal, they’d be the only Offside-repped Ligue 1 team to have done so. You’ve been warned.

Happy Ligue 1 to everyone here :)
I’ll be at Gerland tonight, I’ll tell U what I’ve seen.

I’ve watched game between Strasbourg and Marseille (0-0)… I think OM isn’t ready yet. If they plays like that for all the season, they will not be in the 3, as they announced they want to. I have to say that Strasbourg (and particularly the LW “Mouloungui”) really impressed me. They play without any complex !

Here I am wondering why the hell TVAnts is showing a freakin interview of Joe Cole and I can’t get Sopcast up and running so I can watch the Lyon game and you know why? Because I can’t read a damn 24 hour clock when you were kind enough to list it as 3pm EST, instead of the 2pm I thought it was. I’m an idiot.

And I had forgotten about Thomas Kahlenberg, he’s awesome and due to have a big breakout year very soon. The Lyon midfield will have their hands full trying to close him down before he can get time on the ball and become a big influence further up the field.

Wow. They played well. I only caught the second half (and about five minutes of the first) but I have a few thoughts:

    1) Keita is an awesome addition.
    2) That “you smell” gesture and the backlash made me like Baros
    3) Perrin is much easier on the eyes than Houllier.
    4) I adore Karim Benzema beyond all reason. I want to adopt him. I think I’ll photoshop his picture into our family Christmas cards.

    That is all.

Chris: Glad that it’s now working though. I hope you got to see the game in English. It’s unfortunate that Kahlenberg didn’t start. As it was, Auxerre pretty much shut down OL’s wings for good portions of the game.

Shazback: Hey, some of us actually like watching non-EPL football, you know.

Laurie: A lot of people think Lyon took a step back by recruiting Keita in France as opposed to an exotic foreign winger, but Lyon took a step up in class because he is really good. All he needs is consistency, and I think he could become world class by then.

I’m super content for Benzema, as well as Ben Arfa and Baros. Perrin, while also being better looking that Ged, also trusts his players, and it’s nice to see that trust rewarded. I’ve also never seen Benzema so happy as he has been in these past two months. The 4-4-2 is like an early Christmas present for him!

I’ll have post-match thoughts up in a bit!

Inara : I like L1 football (Rennes fan), but even as a Rennes fan and a loose Lyon liker, Chelsea vs Man U is far better than Auxerre vs Lyon. Sorry. It’s almost as if you complain that your favorite sports channel is showing the Clasico instead of Caen-Nice… Auxerre are an average/boring side, so Lyon-Auxerre seems to be less interesting than Chelsea-Man U… In the same way Lyon-OM is more interesting than Chelsea-Fulham.

Good thing the Charity Shield was several hours before the game, then? I’m sure had they been at the same time, Chelsea-United would have been broadcast instead.

Though for me, I found today’s game interesting because it was Perrin’s first official match, as well as some of the players who’ve never played at the Gerland before, and a new formation…I didn’t care so much about the opponent to be honest. But I am saying this as a dedicated OL fan (though OL can be hella boring sometimes).

More than 35 500 supporters, at Gerland today.
Great match, specially from… Kallstrom. How good he is ! WE CANNOT loose him this year.
    Please Kim… please please please ! Don’t leave !
Benzema was pretty bad today, comparing to what we have seen past two months. His goal is awesome, but he failed in nearly every pass he made ! I didn’t understand why. Baros is really a good complement to Benzema, ke know how to be a good pivot on wings, when it needs.
Grosso did a good match, better in attacking than in defending, but he will probably go up with time.

That was cool ! :) I’m nom waiting for Toulouse.

Just got back from Gerland - a really nice ambiance even if it wasn’t full (but hey August in France)
An easy win for OL even if Auxerre had two brief periods of dominance.
Keita was fantastic, and Laurie he was even better in the first half. He was just so present - seemed to keep popping up all over.
Baros was also very good. Delighted he got a goal. Did anyone notice but I’m pretty sure Baros’ goal was set up by Toulalan, who seemed to play a little more offensively tonight. I also have to (reluctantly) admit that Govou had a

(oops to continue!) yes Govou had a good match.
Muller was also pretty good tonight.
On the downside Benzema was terrible. He messed up pretty much everything he touched, but then he scored that goal and made up for everything. What can you say. We only had one minute of true Benzema but boy did it count. Kallstrom also seemed below his usual (excellent) self. Grosso didn’t really impress.
And Vercoutre well he wasn’t seriously challenged - a couple of moderate saves he managed fine; but every time the ball came close to the Lyon goal you had a feeling of nervousness you just don’t get with Coupet.
Anyway great start to the season, three points, +2 gd and top of the league.

The Community Shield was incredibly dull, there was about 10 minutes in the first half where some decent attacking football was played, and wouldnt you know it if a ex-Lyonnais was behind most of it for Chelsea. Id rather watch Auxerre-Lyon play a real game then ManU-Chelsea play a snoorer exhibtion match where when Chelsea looses on penalties Jose Moruniho simply laughs, his arrogance, but also the lack of importance in the match.

Corey, sorry to dissapoint you, but l’Equipe gave 3 stars to Lyon-Auxerre… out of 6. This indicates it was a very average match (Le Mans-Metz got 3 stars too). So I think that it might have had as much interest for the neutral observer as Man U - Chelsea…

After all, according to l’Equipe : “L’AJA avait décidé de ne pas entreprendre grand chose. Elle n’a rien réussi après l’ouverture du score, signée Baros à la 32e minute.” : Auxerre had decided not to atteñpt much, and after Baros opened the score at the 32nd minute, they didn’t manage a thing.

Sounds great. Oh, and a new record in french football was broken this matchday : fewest goals in the opening day. L1 is almost a caricature of itself…

A neutral observer would probably prefer the Community Shield because those are bigger teams with better known players, but in terms of quality….I watched both games, and while neither of them had be sitting on the edge of my chair in anticipation, the OL-Auxerre game had some thrilling moments, and at least Lyon looked liked they knew how to play. The MU-Chelsea game basically featured red players doing their best to injure the blue ones. United are a really fun team to watch most days, but definitely not yesterday. And Chelsea are boring as hell.

Chelsea is like eating cream of wheat, its just terrible. Man U can be entertaining, but its not because of Ronney. Le Equipe does not matter to me, its a pretty bad magazine, like Shoot! or FourFourTwo. There ratings are based on entertainment value, and as we had a lengthy discussion with Chris on the Roma Offside, I think we unilaterally agreed that entertainment value is a. opinion based and thus not an intrinsic measurement and b. entertaining does not mean quality. The Community Shield was neither quality or entertaining, while Lyon Auxerre was a little of both. I would rather watch a competitive league game between two french teams then a meaningless friendly for a “trophy” between two big english teams. this is true for the trophy of champions as well, id rather watch lyon play bordeuax (yuck, yuck, yuck) then watch lyon play sochaux in the TC. Competitive matches will always beat friendlies.

Andy: I have played soccer all through the summer at 100 degrees before since i was 8 up until this year. I played D3 soccer freshmen year and D1 last year, so i know about pre-season and playing in hot weather. But then again, I dont see how that has any bearing on what i said? As for Einstein, no, but my grandfather was a biochem teacher, so close but no cigar.
