Andy: I have played soccer all through the summer at 100 degrees before since i was 8 up until this year. I played D3 soccer freshmen year and D1 last year, so i know about pre-season and playing in hot weather. But then again, I dont see how that has any bearing on what i said? As for Einstein, no, but my grandfather was a biochem teacher, so close but no cigar.

Put your toes on a 100 degree pitch in front of 80,000 people Corey and let me see you run about for 90mins. Good grief man are you a descendent of Einstein?

At least this game was a touch better than the Cup Final!!

Chelsea is like eating cream of wheat, its just terrible. Man U can be entertaining, but its not because of Ronney. Le Equipe does not matter to me, its a pretty bad magazine, like Shoot! or FourFourTwo. There ratings are based on entertainment value, and as we had a lengthy discussion with Chris on the Roma Offside, I think we unilaterally agreed that entertainment value is a. opinion based and thus not an intrinsic measurement and b. entertaining does not mean quality. The Community Shield was neither quality or entertaining, while Lyon Auxerre was a little of both. I would rather watch a competitive league game between two french teams then a meaningless friendly for a "trophy" between two big english teams. this is true for the trophy of champions as well, id rather watch lyon play bordeuax (yuck, yuck, yuck) then watch lyon play sochaux in the TC. Competitive matches will always beat friendlies.

A neutral observer would probably prefer the Community Shield because those are bigger teams with better known players, but in terms of quality....I watched both games, and while neither of them had be sitting on the edge of my chair in anticipation, the OL-Auxerre game had some thrilling moments, and at least Lyon looked liked they knew how to play. The MU-Chelsea game basically featured red players doing their best to injure the blue ones. United are a really fun team to watch most days, but definitely not yesterday. And Chelsea are boring as hell.

Corey, sorry to dissapoint you, but l'Equipe gave 3 stars to Lyon-Auxerre... out of 6. This indicates it was a very average match (Le Mans-Metz got 3 stars too). So I think that it might have had as much interest for the neutral observer as Man U - Chelsea...

After all, according to l'Equipe : "L'AJA avait décidé de ne pas entreprendre grand chose. Elle n'a rien réussi après l'ouverture du score, signée Baros à la 32e minute." : Auxerre had decided not to atteñpt much, and after Baros opened the score at the 32nd minute, they didn't manage a thing.

Sounds great. Oh, and a new record in french football was broken this matchday : fewest goals in the opening day. L1 is almost a caricature of itself...

The Community Shield was incredibly dull, there was about 10 minutes in the first half where some decent attacking football was played, and wouldnt you know it if a ex-Lyonnais was behind most of it for Chelsea. Id rather watch Auxerre-Lyon play a real game then ManU-Chelsea play a snoorer exhibtion match where when Chelsea looses on penalties Jose Moruniho simply laughs, his arrogance, but also the lack of importance in the match.
