Baby Derby: Grenoble vs. Lyon

By: Inara | January 16th, 2009

Tomorrow, Lyon have an incredibly crucial game against their other bitter rivals – Grenoble. While it’s not as intense as playing against St. Etienne, it’s still a regional rivalry. Unfortunately, this isn’t one of the games that we can all sit back and enjoy. Lyon are in pretty bad shape, both physically and emotionally, and they need a win to kick start their stalled momentum. With Bordeaux lurking one point behind them, there is no more room for error.

January 17, 2009
Stade de Alpes, Grenoble
1 PM ET (19:00 CET, 18:00 GMT)

Background info:

Given that Grenoble’s presence in the top flight has been sporadic at best (it took them 46 years to return to the top flight), Lyon have only played away at Grenoble twice in their history, winning once and drawing once. But Grenoble is known for their passionate fanbase, progressive outlook, and their ultra modern stadium, probably the most modern one in France.

Their roster isn’t too impressive, but despite that, the players have done well for themselves and have a lot to be proud of. They work with what they have, even if it isn’t much. They’ll take heart from Lyon’s recent stumbles against smaller teams.

Their top scorers are Nassim Akrour and Daniel Moreira, who each have four goals. Additionally, Grenoble will be relying on the experience of Laurent Battles, Gregory Wimbee, and David Jemmali.

The last time Lyon played Grenoble was last August in the Gerland, a game which ended in a clear OL victory. That was when Grenoble was sitting pretty on top of the table and had the only winning streak in the league. Times have changed – Grenoble are now in 11th place, with 6 wins, 7 draws, and 7 losses. They’ve scored 13 goals and conceded 18.

Lyon are barely in first place and are in a miserable streak of earning only six points in the last six matches. With 11 wins, 6 draws, and 3 losses, their record isn’t something to boast of. Furthermore, they’ve scored only 24 goals and conceded 13. While they are tied with Rennes for the best defense, Lyon are close to being the bottom half of the table in terms of goals scored. Both Marseille and Bordeaux have scored eleven more goals than Lyon so far, and Karim Benzema is no longer among the top three attackers in the league.

Like I said, pathetic. And I’m not talking about Grenoble.

Lyon info:

I know I didn’t put a post up detailing the latest injury mess that Lyon is faced with (Sidney Govou tore his ACL and will be out for the rest of the season). But I didn’t see the point since I must have written half a dozen posts just like it since the season started. Why bother? To add to that, John Mensah has been ruled out for three weeks due to his being made entirely of glass.

The mildly good news is that Anthony Reveillere doesn’t need surgery because his injury isn’t as bad as the club had originally feared. He’s apparently recuperating faster than they expected (but we still won’t see him anytime soon). Mathieu Bodmer has been eased back into training but won’t be fully operational until at least the end of the month. Francois Clerc is back in training as well, but he’s just doing the exercises, not participating in any contact activities.

Le groupe lyonnais: Lloris, Vercoutre – Grosso, Boumsong, Cris, Gassama – Toulalan, Källström, Makoun, Juninho, Pjanic, Delgado, Ederson, Keita, Mounier – Tafer, Lacazette, Piquionne, Benzema.

Take a close look at that list. Only four defenders. That’s it. That’s how shallow Lyon’s bench is at the moment. I’m guessing youth player Sebastien Faure is also injured for him to not make the list considering the circumstances. Lamine Gassama is back because there is no one else available. You’ll also notice two other kids on the list: Yannis Tafer and Alexandre Lacazette. Most of you are already familiar with Tafer as the kid who is the “next” Benzema. Lacazette is another good youth prospect who also played for France in the U-17 Euro championships this past spring.

And look who didn’t make that list. Fred. I hope he enjoys sitting in the stands while a 17 year old kid who probably just started shaving takes his place in the group.

Expected lineup:

Lloris
Gassama – Cris – Boumsong – Grosso
Makoun – Toulalan – Juninho
Keita – Benzema – Delgado

Nothing can even be said about that backline. In the midfield, I imagine Puel will use his favorites, though I would personally rather drop Jean II Makoun and put in the harder working and more creative Kim Kallstrom.

Up front, with Govou out, it’ll be Kader Keita on the right. Ugh. On the left, I hope it’s Cesar Delgado. Neither Anthony Mounier or Miralem Pjanic in form, though that’s mostly due to lack of playing time. Karim Benzema will no doubt start, though if I hear him talk about how Lyon need to prove their ambitions to him if they want him to stay, I just might bust his head.

Viewing options:

You can try to find streams here, though if that fails, you can follow along on liveblog either on football365.fr or lequipe.fr.

Expected result:

Any win will do. Even a just barely 1-0 win due to a lucky tap in because a Grenoble defender made a mistake. I’m not picky.

John: I’m pretty sure the fitness coach is to blame in large part, as there’s no way that the amount of injuries over the last 2 years is purely down to bad luck. Sure, injuries are unavoidable at times – but I’m sure that this amount of injuries is to do with their fitness coach. I mean, I support Fulham and we’ve only used about 17 or so players in the league this season with few injuries at all, which is a stark comparison with Lyon.

As a quirky aside, which has not a thing to do with Futbol…my ancestors were from Grenoble. So, who should I cheer for? BTW, don’t forget Sx3 tomorrow…we’ll be in an Inaugural Kind of Mood!

I’m very pleased for both Delgado and Ederson. I hope Ederson’s injury isn’t serious though. That would be terrible, just as he’s starting to hit his stride.

I can’t wait to watch the game, or at least watch highlights.

Good game from Lyon. Its obvious that the Delgado/Ederson combo on the wings is superior than some previous incarnations involving Keita or Govou. Both players had a good game and scored goals!

Also leaving Makoun out for Kallstom added some needed forward movement from the midfield. I think this is the new equipe type

I also REALLY liked Gassama at right back. We all know he cant defend very well yet but he’s gonna get better quickly and he really added some good speed and passes going forward. The right side was brilliant today.

Benzema had an off day. Aside from his assist he looked short of ideas and didnt pass the ball enough.

I wonder if we watched the same game, yesterday !

To me, Delgado has been man of the match !
How can you say he’s doing horrible ? Even before he scored, he was on each ball, fighting, using his excellent technical when he had 2 or 3 Grenoble players on him !
He is not only the player who scored the second goal, he is also the man who create the spaces on the first goal !
I’ll give him a 7/10, and the same rate for Toulalan who has been everywhere on the pitch.
That Toulalan is like a shampoo : 3 men in one. When you succeed to dribble him, he comes back and you have to dribble him once again… and once again.
With Toulalan, we played 13 against eleven.

Benzema has been OFF during all the match.
Hope that was only for yesterday…

its about to me that delgado as tried everything to get some first team action, whether it be acting as attacking mid. or on the wings. i like him as a part of the team as he adds depth. one thing that i don’t like is that he will look for the shot most of the times instead of a cross that would be more beneficial. but being in ligue 1 could improve that. i think pjanic should do what he was brought to do, back up ederson in the central attacking role and be used more, hes great their.

As far as transfers go, i didn’t expect Lyon to pull out miraculous deals for someone of alex’s caliber ( Chelsea ) but i also expect lyon to fight for everything given to them. the fact that we scored two and the sheet didnt have benzema’s name is huge. if we face Barca with the same lineup, we cant think small, thinking big is the key, diarra and essien would say the same thing. Makoun and toula are inperfect positions to do the jobfor the cl and L1, so im not too worried about that. what i am worried about it how benz eventual departure will have on the teams overall moral. i think if we score more ” team ” goals, then it will, leave a more lasting impression.

If anyone hasnt noticed yet, im drunk a bit, so my words make more sense :)

Offering 13mill plus Piquionne for Savidan seems a lot to me for a 30 year old for that price we could have got BenArfa or maybe even Drogba

    Alex :

    http://lyonclips.blogspot.com/

the site usually have all the goals for downloads about one day after. As for the entire game, that could take up to two or three days, as the person who uploads the game for EVERYONE also uploads other games ( i would give you the link to a forum that uploads full matches daily, but they arent excepting new members now )

13 mill + Piquionne for Savidan is insane. Better to spend that money on a young striker in the summer; I have Hoarau on my mind….

John-I agree the fee is very steep as it is without adding Piquionne(for some odd reason I thought he would dop well here)But i dont fucking care transfer activity is transfer activity weather it means an inflative price. But i would like to see lyon buy someone from abroad rather than frace all the tie now all we need is at least 1 CB an attacking left back/winger and savidan

Look at the comment at goal.com:

”13 millions + piquionne = 8 millions for Savidan and 5 millions in order to Caen takes Piquionne.”

Haha, then we better hope Lyon doesn’t try and give them Fred as well, we don’t have that much money! :)

Lyon will beat that little club we playing at saturday. Let’s say 0-6 for Lyon. Benzogoal will score hat-trick, Delgado, Juni and Toulalan will score once. We must destroy them, for morale, and because we must be ready for Marseille. I’m optimistic. I belive in Puel, and in power of Lyon’s player. Allez Lyonnais

I don’t understand why Lyon aren’t trying to get a left back on loan as cover for Grosso, who can play at the CL level. Maybe they don’t think they’ll get passed Barcelona. Their efforts seem to be Savidan and Faubert right now.

I hope we sign Mancini because in my opinion on his day hes the best winger in the world, pace, strength, skill and playmaking are his fortes. A team with Mancini,Benzema,Juninho,Ederson and Govou will cause havoc to any sefence. I really like Mancini I prey these latest rumours are true
