Karim Benzema on Cover of FIFA 09
By: Inara | June 26th, 2008I don’t play video games. I’ve never owned a gaming system, nor have I ever wanted one. Online Literati is about all I’m capable of.
But from what I understand, soccer video games are huge. A lot of people use “Football Manager” as a way to judge players, and there is even a section of the Offside devoted to video games. So as one of your resident OL bloggers, it’s my duty to announce that Karim Benzema will be on the cover of the soon to be released FIFA 09. The two other players will be Wayne Rooney and Franck Ribery.

Faces of the Future: RBR
Personally speaking, I didn’t think this was that big a deal, but apparently, I’m wrong (which wouldn’t surprise me – what do I know about video games?). The fact that Electronic Arts (the parent company of EA Sports) believe in Benzema’s marketability to an overseas audience is indicative of his rising popularity.
Which, in a twisted sort of way, I don’t want because that just means it will be even harder to keep him at Lyon (I was secretly glad that he had a poor Euro 2008 for the same reason). Does that make me selfish?

EA actually have a strong connection with Lyon as they chose to locate their French head office in Lyon’s booming video games suburb. For most European/US companies that wouldn’t be a big deal, but French business is incredibly concentrated around Paris, so for any large multi national to choose Lyon instead of Paris is a big deal. Maybe therefore they felt a little extra emotional bind to Benzema?

Last time I played to Fifa 08, I lost 9-0.
There’s no worst player than me. I don’t like football video games

Inara, I assume you have never heard of the Madden curse? When a football player appears on the cover he ends up getting injured the following year….
Well, upon looking back it appears that the past few FIFA covers have players on them that have completely lost form after appearing, we are talking Ronaldinho, Fernando Morientes and Henry here.

Wow, a video game post. awesome. I say that because i play video games all the time.
Then fact the Lyon are getting any kind of recognition is great. and the fact that its Benzema makes it even better. The thing its, he wont be on all the covers. EA sports has this thing about putting players from alternate places ( for example : Brazil’s FIFA 09 will have a brazilian on the cover, U.S. will have an American and Mexican player, German will have a German player, and so on and so one ).
But its cool none the less.
P.S. i actually dont like playing FIFA games, i play Pro Evolution Soccer

Inara – Benzema’s super marketable but what i see is that there are 2 french players on the cover. It’s true that Fifa has always had a bias towards french players since Ginola covered the three first ones and then henry for a few years then ribery and now benzema.
It’s greatPosted from

@ Jo. How did you lose 9-0. Did you start playing on World Class level right away? The AI just starts missing a lot after 3-0.
Glad to see Benzema and Ribery on the cover. I hope that they play well next season and make amends for the dismal show at Euros in 2010 WC.

I remember two years ago, Tony Parker and Juninho played video games together for an EA publicity thing.
Also, two years ago, Juninho was on the French cover of FIFA 07 and also in the trailer for it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=8ykgpLc7XlI

(I remember the EA publicity thing! I still have pictures from that)
From what I see from the forums, his popularity is definitely rising. And then again so are rumours of a move to Real or United.
All I play is FIFA Manager on my phone (OL is easy to win with, and it boring real fast..)

What is the “AI”, Aditya ?
I lost 9-0 because I only play against Professionnal game players ! They play all the time, Fifa and PES.When I play, I’m just in front of the TV, with my remote control, saying (yelling ?) to it what I want to do.

I guess I’m good to see how to play. But I’m also really bad to realize what I wanna do !To me, Football’s playing with the feet. Cannot play with my hands. I’m not Maradona.

PES (Pro Evolution Soccer) has always been the superior soccer video game with the exception of the latest version PES2008, which is a piece of shit.
